David O. Russell held a Q & A after a screening at the Arclight last month and talked extensively about how they did this. It was pretty amazing. The fight with Sanchez is an even closer approximation. If you watch it on Youtube, it's like watching the movie (and the knockout is unbelievable).

 

One small note: They didn't recreate the commetantor dialogue, they used the audio tracks from the actual fights.

This was great stuff, Renn.  Thanks for the link.  I actually found Micky's approach to boxing fairly 'uncinematic' in the movie (sorta pummeled for a while then BAM).  Despite the few liberties O. Russell took with them, it seems like a lot of it was due to how close (relative compared to most boxing movies) stuck to the reality.
