The show will go on without Andy Whitfield.

I watched the pilot and kinda hated the show - an ugly bastard child of 300 and Rome without any charm. Is it actually any good (remembering I still have Deadwood to catch up on)?

Is it any good? Now that is a tough question. I'd have to say no? But it's fun as fuck after the first three or four shitty episodes. And terribly addictive. I guess its good?

I'd definitely leave it for after Deadwood, though.

And Nick, tell your friend that they pulled it off with the first season. I don't know what and I don't know how but they did. I hope they carry on like that.

This was not good, and compared to ROME it's terrible, but it still sort of grew on me

As for the mystery star with a built in fan base? Let's hope it's not a pro wrassler or something. There is only ONE person I care to see in the role:

Whitfield and the other leads were about 80% of the show for me, and I don't see how they can go on without him. He really owned that character, and I was looking forward to his future career. I feel really bad for him too, non-hodgkins is really dangerous when it makes a comeback. I had hodgkins (like Michael C. Hall), and I just went through a stem cell transplant with a 10% death rate. Pretty good odds. Whitfield's odds are pretty terrible if that's the next step, something like 50/50.

Sorry to hear that about Mr Whitfield. He was fairly compelling in the lead. Glad to hear you're doing better though Gabe. I wish you luck and a speedy recovery

Thanks Kate, I'm on my way.

I recently picked up the first season of Spartacus when Target had a sale on it, and the packaging is pretty cool. A co-worker said the show was good and had lots of action. I should be checking it out soon.

Still, hope Whitfield pulls through, and glad to hear your alright, Gabe.

Good or bad, I thought Wentworth Miller was in talks to take on the role.  Is he out?

There is absolutely no reason to watch this show, aside from seeing Lucy Lawless naked repeatedly. That said, I found it quite enjoyable in a junk food way. Good over-the-top fun. Was a good show to watch at the end of an evening with a post-bar buzz on.

This show is definitely good over-the-top fun. Sad that Whitfield is out, and we all wish him a quick recovery. He was one of the best parts of the show for sure. I'll still watch anything they do with the show though.

Isn't Gods of the Arena coming out soon?  Later this month?

Starts the 21st of this month.

I don't think I'm supposed to love this show as much as I do, but the ridiculousness hooked me very early on. The show comes on strong with the sex and violence from the start and then starts to dig deeper into the characters as the season progresses. And if they can "melt eyes" this upcoming season following the depravity of the first, then I will be a very happy viewer.

Alot of damning with faint praise going on here lol ,  yes its not shakespeare infact the first 2 eps are pretty awful, but from ep 4 on its like televisual crack with nearly every episode from there till the finale having a holy **** moment , the finale was one of the most satisfying I've seen in years .

Gutted Andy can't reprise his role he completely sold every emotional beat for me

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
from his desire to do anything to get back to Sura , to her and varro's death

One can only hope they manage to find a capable replacement .

Looking forward to the Whitfieldless Gods of the arena , as that will be the acid test to see if they can survive without him .
