Director's Club Podcast

Thread Starter

My dear friend Jim Laczkowski and myself are hosting a podcast in which we discuss two films by a different director every episode. Our first episode (http://directorsclubpodcast.com/post/2692015086/episode1) focuses on Cameron Crowe, and his films Say Anything and Elizabethtown. If this sounds of interest to you, and you don't have enough goddamned film podcasts in your life, give it a listen.

We also did a bonus podcast about our favorite films of 2010 (http://directorsclubpodcast.com/post/2692015086/episode1), but in all honesty this one isn't nearly as strong.

Woo! We got approved for iTunes. So all you need to do is search for "Director's Club" under iTunes or use this link.

Great. As soon as my phone, my primary device for listening to podcasts is fixed, I'm giving it a try. And then I'll come here and whine my ass off about how much it sucks.

Listening now.

Jim is trying to hum The Social Network score.  He's my kind of people.  I'm always obnoxiously humming scores to myself without realizing it.

Never seen a Rob Zombie film (other than his contribution to Grindhouse, which I found the least interesting thing in the whole experience).  But I still really enjoyed listening to you guys go at it.

Ha, thanks Nooj!

And for those that want to hear what Nooj is talking about, our second episode, in which we discuss Rob Zombie's films House of 1000 Corpses and Devil's Rejects, is now up for your listening pleasure. Though "discuss" is maybe not the right term. Our opposing stances on The Devil's Rejects got us into a near fist fight.

I like that you and Jim come across like genuine dear friends. When it's you bashing things Jim loves and him taking it manfully on the chin there's none of the personal offense that happens with less secure people and it's refreshing to come across. The CHUD Show has a similar strength, where the boys tear into each others' tastes sometimes but the affection and respect for each other is always solid. I like the lack of nerd defensiveness that sometimes creeps into and hampers other film-based shows I enjoy like Slashfilmcast. And speaking of those guys I like that you do the What We've Been Watching at the start. It's a good first segment. I also like the way the audio clips are used throughout the show.

If there's a downside for me it's that there's not one single podcast I listen to where it's the same two hosts every week. That dynamic just doesn't hold me tight enough. I guess Smodcast and Filmspotting were the only two of that type that I ever got hooked on regularly, but I gave both of those the old heave ho some time ago. But this is an it's not you it's me scenario, not a piece of criticism. I just like the increased variety in the chemistry that comes with three man shows and/or guest spots. In a similar way I listen to almost no solo podcasts. But it's horses for courses, strokes for folks etc.

The one solid piece of criticism I have is that either Patrick's mic doesn't sound great or he's in a room with echoes. Are you guys recording this in separate places or the same room? Also, I'd probably like it better if you didn't restrict it to two films from each director but that conceit might grow on me and I'm sure there's a reason for it that I'm just to stupid to figure out.

I think overall you guys have a good base to work from in your relationship, with that combination of genuine mutual respect and differing tastes. I've listened to other shows which feature people I like, such as Russ Fisher on Running Dialogue, but the natural chemistry isn't there on that show like you guys have it. And the more you do it the better you'll get.

Wow, thanks Bucho. That post means a lot to me.

Jim is my best friend and we disagree on movies (and music) constantly, so we have a lot of practice. We started with two directors that we disagreed with because, in addition to it being good radio, we wanted to highlight our tastes and distinguish ourselves from each other, for new listeners. But that's not always going to be the case.

As for the two hosts, we're working on securing guest hosts. The first month we probably won't have any, but we're working on getting Jim's colleagues from eFilmCritic and Chicago WGN Radio to join us on a regular basis, once we switch to once a month. I have a few tricks up my sleeves as well, on the guest front.

I noticed that about my mic too. It's not the quality of the mic, I think I'm just too far away from it when I speak. It's something we'll have to work on next time, for sure.

As for two films, it's just a matter of logistics. Trying to cover the entire filmography to prep for the episode wouldn't be doable for most directors, and trying to talk about films we've seen two, three, or more years ago isn't always as interesting or detailed. Ideally, we try to use the two films to not only give the discussion structure but as an entry point for the director's entire career. But I'll be the first to admit that we can improve upon that.

Thanks again for your kind words and constructive criticism. I've been pretty happy with how the podcast is going so far, and I'm happy that others are also enjoying it.

Yeah, good call, that's actually exactly what it sounds like. Like you're not all up in your mic's shit, radio style. It's an easy and cheap fix if you can just develop the habit of being right on it.

Looking forward to seeing how the show rolls in future installments.

We just finished recording episode three, actually. Should good up late tomorrow afternoon. It may be our best episode yet. It's definitely our rapiest.

The new episode of the podcast, in which we cover Terry Gilliam, is here. I mistakenly say that Gilliam directed Life of Brian and Meaning of Life. Jim mistakenly calls Unstoppable "Unbreakable". But make no mistake: This episode contains brand new original music from the B-52's Fred Schneider.

WHY, LORD, WHY!?

Looking forward to listening to it once I finish up some work (which means I'll probably listen to it now in order to procrastinate).

I'm really digging this podcast and glad to have found a forum about it. I was looking into movie and theater podcasts being an aspiring actress. I saw too many movie podcasts but I decided to try three of them. One of them had very long episodes and the other had too short episodes. I used to love Siskel & Ebert when I was yunger so the idea of two guys talking about film is entertaining to me. I downloaded this through ITunes checked out the site and just joined Chud too. I've really liked the first few episodes a lot. You should maybe compare performances by the same actor who works with the same director multiple times. Im not sure how many examples there are that would be interesting? Obvious example would be DeNiro in two Scorsese films. I'm interested in film in general but I'd especially like to hear even more about the acting as well as the director's work too. Keep the episodes coming Patrick. Listening to thoughts on Brazil was especially good but i'm more with Jim on Rob Zombie. My ex was a huge horror fan, but I wasn't mainly because I am easily freaked out. He took me to the theater to see Devils Rejects and I thought it was horrible. Other than that we mainly agree so far.

Thanks for the kind words! The response has been really amazing, and it's incredibly heartwarming that people are enjoying it so much. Also, thanks for reminding me to update this thread with a link to the latest episode, in which we discuss John Landis and two of his horror comedies, An American Werewolf in London and Innocent Blood. Featuring our first guest, Carly!

Also, welcome to the boards, Jenny. I've found no better place for film discussion on the internet. Glad to have lead you here.

Ooooh, nice.  I saw An American Werewolf in London for the first time not TOO long ago.  Saw Innocent Blood on TV back in the 5th grade.  Sounds fun.

When will Carly's kitty be a guest?

Down to twice a month!?  What is this new bullshittery!?

Hahahahah, smart move.  The last thing you want with something like this you do for fun is to burn out on trying to meet some arbitrary 'quota.'

Yeah, Jim's going back to school, so he's not going to have as much time for everything. But we are going to try to record more bonus episodes to make up for it, starting with an upcoming Oscars episode.

How about an episode focusing on hatred towards Juliette Lewis?  I hate her face.

I didn't recognize Edward Furlong in Green Hornet either.  I'm pretty sure it was the scuzzy-looking guy that Green Hornet tells to send his message to Chudnofsky.  I just assumed it was the dude who played Scud (or Scuz?  Blade's tech sidekick) in Blade II.  I was kinda bowled over when I found out it was Furlong.

And Apocalypse Now basically begins with a huge-ass slow-mo explosion (set to The Doors) with helicopters passing by.

Thread Starter

Right, I can't believe I forgot about the explosion that started that. It's been too long since I first saw Apocalypse Now and was thrown into a week-long depression.

And for those playing along at home, Nooj is referring to the bonus episode me and Jim recorded over Skype, in which we talk about disaster movies, Lord of the Rings, and Right At Your Door.

I always tend to forget stuff like trivia, names, and vocabulary right when I need to access it for myself.  Usually, when someone else needs that info, I'm right there with it.  It sucks.

EDIT:  Listening to Carly's restroom story on the bonus material:  She just wanted to save you Carly!  Why won't you let her save you!?

Ugh... I've been in a similar situation myself with a Korean janitor.  Unfortunately, I was doing pulling an all-nighter in a computer lab and had nowhere else I needed to be.  TRAPPED.  I swear I wanted to fake an exorcism just to make him stop (or to simply stop the tedium by 'changing the game').

EDIT2:  I just realized I completely misused the word "exorcism."  But hopefully, my point was clear.

I downloaded the podcasts last night and began with Episode 4, which starts with a clip from The Larry Sanders Show then goes into a bit of CCR. So with that short introduction, and the history of good stuff you bring to this site, Patrick, I know I'm going to stick with the show. You've got yourselves another listener!

And I'm probably the only one but does anyone else think Jim sometimes sounds like a young Larry Karaszewski? Just me?

Thread Starter

Thanks, Nick (can I call you Nick?). Jim's the super producer, so the Larry Sanders intro was his idea, and a great one. I love the transition between it and the week's opening song.

I listened to 3 and 4 and goddammit I'm liking this thing. I'm liking it a lot. The tone of the conversation is perfect and I laugh at it a lot more than a lot of comedy podcasts I've tried to listen to.

I hope with many of the fibers of my being that Patrick watches Three Amigos someday soon.

The episode with Carly was the first one to click with me. Jim and Patrick need an outside voice as a springboard.

Episode 5, about the films of Mr. Todd W. Haynes, is up now.  We also got a snazzy new layout and a profile picture that's 200% more creepy.

Next week we go more obscure (at least, to us) with Joseph Losey.

An interstellar burst, we're back to save the universe with a discussion about the great underrated director Joseph Losey. In it we discuss two great films of his, The Servant and The Prowler. We also have a discussion about the differences between Cape Fear (1962) and Cape Fear (1992).

This week we had Rene (Mr. Eko) join us via satellite to talk about the great action director John McTiernan and his two films Predator and Die Hard. We had a great time with Rene and we also discussed Drive Angry, Cedar Rapids, and the phenomenon of fan films.

I think McTiernan's commentary for Die Hard was pretty good, Rene!  But then, that was one of the earliest commentaries I listened to.  I could also be mixing it up a bit with the very-informative text commentary.

Great connection between Die Hard and Gremlins for the 'where did THAT come from' personal stories.

Listened to the McTiernan last night...good stuff as always (and nice cameo, Rene!).  Patrick, how do you guys choose directors to focus on?

Thread Starter

We have a list of about 150 directors, and it's growing all the time. Sometimes it depends on what guests want (we have a major film podcaster lined up for the fall who made a special request for Errol Morris), but mostly we try to do a wide variety so the choices come down to "We haven't done an action director yet, we haven't done a foreign director yet, we haven't done a director from before 1960 yet..." etc. With someone like Losey, the challenge was to do a director we were COMPLETELY unfamiliar with.

Also we're trying to avoid HUGE names (Hitchcock, Spielberg, Scorsese, Altman, Kurosawa) until we're confident that we can really do them justice. Someone like Hitchcock, we're likely to do two episodes (or more) back to back on, when that time comes. The idea is that one week we can do Walter Hill (coming this summer) and the next week we can do Jodorowsky

Then we're also going to try to do some new movies that come out, and cover directors that way. We're planning on covering David Gordon Green when Your Highness comes out, and have talked about possibly covering Kevin Smith when Red State goes wide (that one is much more tenuous, though).

The relative infrequency of release (very few regular podcasts only update twice a month) means that we'll likely never run out (especially when we can go back and cover previous directors) but it also means that we have enough time to really dive into their filmography.

Also, I'd like to note that we plan on always having guests from here on out and if you're interested in being on, definitely feel free to contact me with a list of directors you'd be especially interested in. Most of the people on CHUD are smarter than I, so I'd like to make sure we get a bunch of you on, especially now that we've figured out how to have guests via internet. A lot of you will be hearing from me in the near future.

It's been a long time, we shouldn't have left you, without a dope cast to pod to.

Our latest episode, on great Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, is a monster (riding that Tonka, color of Willy Wonka), clocking at nearly 3 hours. Doing research for this podcast, he quickly became one of our favorite directors ever, so we (along with Row Three & Cinecast's own Andrew James as our guest) had a lot to say, covering two of his most widely acclaimed films Talk To Her and All About My Mother.

We also discuss Hanna, Jane Eyre, and Trust and we each list our top 5 directors.

Two for the price of none.

David Gordon Green - I loved George Washington, hated All The Real Girls. Jim loves them both. We agree that Your Highness was weak.

Sam Raimi - Evil Dead 2 and The Quick and The Dead are discussed, loved, I have a fat voice. A listener yells at us because we're too white.

The two latest are both good podcasts, although the Woody Allen one is a marathon. Lots of interesting points, but trying to sum up a director with as extensive a filmography as Allen's in a single podcast is an impossible task.

I'm listening to the Woody Allen podcast and got to the part where you guys talk about a friend who couldn't tell Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale apart.

I recently learned that a friend of mine had a hard time telling Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes apart.  Ya'll white people all look the same!  I wonder what it's like to watch Schindler's List with that 'condition'.

That was me, for the record.  Sorry if you guys thought I was yelling at you, that wasn't really my intention.  I just honestly wondered if you had any plans to cover women directors and suggested a few.  It was meant more as suggestion then as criticism.  I love the podcasts.

Arrived in my mailbox last week to remind me, but a Jean Vigo podcast seems almost perfect for the podcast.

Not that they aren't all great, but I just wanted to say that the Fincher ep is excellent.  I wish I had a new one of these to listen to every day (outside of the older ones I haven't caught yet).
