NYC Event Announcing Verizon iPhone sometime today?  Launch date Feb 3rd.

Commence the douchebags ruining the best carrier out there.

Yes...because obviously the nation's largest carrier ONLY caters to cool, independent cellphone users like you.  People who see the value in supporting underdogs like Samsung and HTC.  It's going to be so annoying when those Apple using hipster sheeple join the 100 million iconoclasts that make up verizon.  Jesus.

Tru dat.

Calm down, LD, just riling up the Apple people.  I wouldn't have started the thread if I didn't feel this was ultimately a good thing for me as a Verizon Android customer.  I see better priced, monster feature phones in my upgrade future.

My only issue will be if Verizon didn't take a look at AT&T's bandwidth issues and double-time their efforts to avoid it.

This will only make the Android phones we get on Verizon that much better. There is no reason for me to ever buy an iPhone.

I've been with AT&T since I got my first cellphone back in 2002, and if anything, this will bring in some good features for us loyalists. More than likely the return of unlimited data plans once the deluge of Verizon iPhone wanters leave. Not for me of course (I still have my unlimited data plan), but for my girlfriend who's been on a 200 MB plan for her iPhone that I got her a few months ago, and I'm sure things will get competitive between the 2 companies.

This will be a positive thing for all iPhone owners.

If this happened just 7 or 8 months ago, I would be ecstatic. Then came that fateful day I got my Incredible. Now I don't give a shit.

I need me some simultaneous loving of my voice and data. I actually like to check things on the web while speaker conferencing.

Oh and I have a hot spot as well, its just one of the many features of jailbreaking. Oh if you start talking to me about ethics, I will take a dump on your child or future 1st born.

It's 3G.....

BWAH-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

No threat at all.  Android will have optimized for LTE and given another year head start will dominate the market once an LTE version iPhone is released.

People who buy this thing in February four months before iPhone 5 is announced will be pissing and moaning on every single tech site I belong to. Not looking forward to it.

And they have absolutely no reason to.  Apple has a regimented release schedule, they know what is coming.  I wonder how many people that will put off buying it and cause it to be a slow starter for Verizon?  A perfect storm I know....

Dude, it's not a team sport.  If one OS dominates, it's bad.  We're lucky to be in an environment with three fully viable mobile operating systems.  I'm not trolling you, but you seriously sound EXACTLY like the Apple fanboys that apparently haunt your dreams.

You're cool on the trolling.  I'm only pro-Android because I have one.  I don't have any investment in it otherwise.  But I will cop to being anti-Apple; it's mostly just trolling Apple fanbois in a good natured way.

Not being able to do voice and data at the same time? no thanks.  If this was to be using their 4G network then I might leave AT&T. As of right now, there is no point to.

Honestly with Verizon switching to sim cards (finally!) for LTE, and AT&T doing the same, if the phone can have the frequencies for both in the future, then I might switch. Yeah I travel, and I need that option.

Not to bash Verizon, but the USofA is so stupid with the way they have their cellular spectrum set up. If all cell companies actually used the same spectrum of frequencies, that lil forgotten consumer could benefit and these companies would actually have to compete. I was in India a lilttle while back, and was incredibly jealous of how cell phone companies would fight to get my business and actually have the cheaper rates.

That said, I also hate that companies here think they should switch to tiered data plans just because the rest of the world is so. One of the reasons America is great is because it offers things other countries can't, and hiding behind leveling the field is so stupid just because we don't want to upgrade our infrastructure.

That said, I still have my unlimited plan and AT&T can deal with it that I use it (and yes I do use it responsibly, I use the netflix app and use a video out cable, and I do video conference via Skype on the go). Innovate, don't just catch up. Go so far beyond what the standard is and set a new one.

Source?

A quick Google shows me articles that talk about them being used but no announcements that they are to become standard.

*EDIT* And for someone who has never had a phone with a SIM card in it, what is the purpose?

SIM cards save all your numbers, so when you get a new phone, all you have to do is take the SIM card out of the old phone, and put it in the new phone.

Also with a sim card, you can use the phone if you ever go out of the country. I kept my Blackberry Tour solely for that reason, since it was one of the few "world" phones on Verizon and Sprint.

I, for one, hope this improves the AT&T network solely for the loss of all those people going to Verizon.  And as mentioned, I hope it also brings back the unlimited data plan from AT&T, which was bullshit that they got rid of in the first place.  I'd love to see the numbers of how many people still get the unlimited grandfathered plan vs. how many customers now pay the tiered.  I've never run over the 2 GB (is that it?) plan, but I've come close a few times, usually when I'm on vacation and not able to use a wireless network or internet somewhere else.

In reading the posts about the conference, I believe the Verizon guys said they had spent time improving their network to prepare for the iPhone influx.  Interestingly, they also said that the Verizon iPhone will support the hot spot functionality as well, which is really cool, and just about makes me want to switch based on that alone.  But my wife & I are both on AT&T, and both of our contracts aren't up until 2012, then we'll step back and take another look.

Apparently the hotspot feature is an Apple-developed app that will be available in the next OS, although obviously it's a carrier-based decision on whether or not it can be used.  Will be interesting to see what AT&T does with it.

My contract is up this summer.  I'm happy I get to witness this launch, and AT&T's response, from the sidelines.  Should give me enough time to wait for the next generation and see who I should go with...

From what I gather from various sources, there is no SIM card because of the CDMA network. Also heard if you're using the phone as a hotspot you will not be able to receive calls...at all. That's up there with the no calls and data for me....

Well, if you have great coverage and decent customer service with AT&T, then there really isn't a pressing need to jump ship to Verizon is there?

But I don't see the glory in owning a phone like that and boasting about being able to do data and voice at the same time while you're dropping calls and signals constantly. Who cares if you can only do both over WiFi on Verizon versus being able to do both over AT&T's supposedly shitty data.

Honestly I just use pdanet. I won't say how to get it, but it's practically my sole reason for jailbreaking (that and unlock).

Of course it's 3G.  LTE would be a new product, and this was not a new product announcement for Apple.  Verizon held a media event because they wanted people to know their customers could buy the iPhone- that's it.  Maybe you'll see and LTE iPhone in June, but honestly I think Apple will decide that based on how built-out 4G is nationwide, and how much an LTE chip affects battery life.

I love how almost all the media (and even fanboy) coverage of the verizon iphone has been mainly that nobody cares. No lines at stores, no crazed fanboys sleeping in tents for days waiting to get theirs. The technology blogs not making a big deal out of it by essentially saying its the same exact thing as on AT&T, nothing to be amazed by, etc etc etc.

I got mine. I love it. I could care less whether there's any media coverage to make me feel good about buying it.

It's a nearly year old product.  What is there to report?  However, preorders did break Verizon's previous 1 day record in 2 hours.

But it will be interesting to see how things play out in June.
