ZODIAC SIGNS: The Next Generation

Much like a favourate cartoon or toyline from your childhood would introduce a new character to mix things up, so to has the Zodiac Calender!

Quote:
Astronomer Parke Kunkle tells NBC news that due to the Earth's changing alignment in the last 3000 years, the sign you are born into now are different than they were long ago. Plus, some astronomers believe there is a 13th Zodiac sign called Ophiuchus, which falls between Scorpio and Sagittarius.

"This is not something that happened today. This has gone on for thousands of years," says Kunkle. "Because of this change of tilt, the Earth is really over here in effect and Sun is in a different constellation than it was 3,000 years ago."

The constellation of Ophiuchus is located near the celestial equator and is typically depicted as a man wrangling a serpent. "Ophiuchus" means "serpent-bearer" in Greek. There are several different characters from Greek mythology that Ophiuchus is thought to represent, including Asclepius the healer, Trojan priest Laocoon, who was killed by sea serpents, and Phorbas, who saved the people of Rhodes from an infestation of serpents.

The sign Ophiuchus can be found in the Sidereal Zodiac, which is used by Jyotish (or Hindu) astrologers. The Sidereal Zodiac's astrological sign dates are similar to the dates listed below, depending on if the Sun is in a constellation or not.

So astrology enthusiasts should be using these dates, which reflect the current alignment of the Sun, Earth and stars.

Capricorn: Jan. 20 - Feb. 16
Aquarius: Feb. 16 - March 11
Pisces: March 11- April 18
Aries: April 18- May 13
Taurus: May 13- June 21
Gemini: June 21- July 20
Cancer: July 20- Aug. 10
Leo: Aug. 10- Sept. 16
Virgo: Sept. 16- Oct. 30
Libra: Oct. 30- Nov. 23
Scorpio: Nov. 23- Nov. 29
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29- Dec. 17
Sagittarius: Dec. 17- Jan. 20

I don't care much for this stuff personally but what do you folks think? Happy where you ended up?  I atleast got upgraded from a bull to THE GOD OF WAR (or a ram)

Wow I couldn't be more against this.. Under the current rules, there is a 2/3rds chance that I share a Zodiac sign with Alexander the Great. I'm not a big  fan of having a crustacean named "cancer" as my ASTRO AVATAR, but I like this new idea even less

Went from a lion to a crab, alas.  Not that it means a tinker's fuck.

So I go from a cool centaur archer to a guy holding a snake?  Who can I lodge a complaint with?

So I guess that means that my character is supposed to change?

What a fucking crock of shit. Charlatans.

A fucking sea goat? Laaaame.

I go from being the most feared term in medical history to a guy with a personality disorder.

Fuck that noise! I'm taking the old crock of shit over the new crock of shit.

Changes only affect those born after 2009. Also, it's all fake.

No it's not! Fuck you!

man, didn't even change. still the mini-zoidberg

I'm okay with changing from a virgin to a lion.  But astrology is dogshit.

I will not complain about going from Cancer to Gemini. Nothing less flattering than having your sign share common nomenclature with a terminal disease.

Crabs are terminal?  Shit.

I'm a little confused.  Isn't astrology highly concerned with stars and planets and extra-planetary stuff (hence the "astro")?  Why would there be an astrology focused solely on the seasons in that case?

Not that I care.

I really don't understand this whole story. Do you HAVE to switch your sign? Do you get a choice? Does it or does it not only apply to people born after a certain date? From the way HUFFPO is reporting this, they act as if everyone as of now gets new signs

I like my old sign, and I'd like to stick the old signs if at all possible

Even though I didn't like being a crab growing up, as I've gotten older and my tastebuds refined, I've come to appreciate the classiness of having a crab AVATAR. The name isn't great, obviously, but the animal itself is cool and tasty

Stick with what you want to Kate.  It's not like wizards are gonna show up at your door to steal your soul because your following the WRONG astro mumbo jumbo.  Unless they do in which case, watch out for wizards over the weekend.

I don't follow it, but I liked knowing that I had the same sign (most likely) as Alexander. It meant our personalities were similar at somic base level, or something (not really sure what the signs are supposed to mean). I don't care enough to willfully choose to follow some other astro system, I just took pleasure in knowing that we were officially linked on some cosmic way according to the rules of astro signs

If it's no longer official it's pointless, IMHO

No they don't.  Unless the axial procession of the Earth shifted a couple of degrees overnight in 2009, the changes effect everyone born for the past several hundred years.  This shit was old news in the astronomy class I took 9 years ago.

I pity everyone who got a star sign tattoo.

Astrology brouhaha is all a big misunderstanding

In Western astrology, what sign you are is not based on the position of constellations—but rather, the position of the earth in relation to the sun. The Western zodiac sign--and their beginning and end dates--are based on the ring of constellations that are visible along the ecliptic, or path of the sun over the course of a year.

“There’s a 360-degree ring around the earth,” says Baum. “The confusion is how to calculate the beginning and end points. There are two different ways of calculating it—one from the position of the earth, and one from the position of the solar system as a whole.”

Baum relates it to standing on a mountaintop versus standing at the base of a mountain and watching a sunset. “You’re looking at the same thing from a different point of view, but nothing changes,” she says. While the constellations are the same in both Western and Vedic astrology, the measuring points vary.

OK, is Rachel is keeping her sign, no way am I going to change:

MADDOW VOWS TO REMAIN AN AIRES

"Despite not believing really in astrology, I insist on remaining an Aries. And never mind the freaking Minnesota Planetarium Society and their big facts about the universe. No matter what they say, I am not trading the mighty Aries ram for some tiny pair of fish and life as a Pisces. I'm not doing it! But I am sort of psyched that even as we tiny little things on the Earth's crust lament that things on the Earth's crust, things here in our world can't change, the very Earth, the universe, mocks us by itself changing and by forcing us to adapt. I love that."
