AN IDIOT ABROAD

Karl Pilkington bringing his round hound manky buffoonery around the world.  Fucking gold.  Pardon me if there's a thread for it already.  I did a search and nothing came up.  I believe this show is airing soon enough in the US.  I saw a commercial for it on the Travel channel I believe.  Though it's already been released on DVD in the UK so I'm sure it can be found (or you can try online...).

If you like listening to or now watching the Ricky Gervais Show, you'll love this.  I just wish they had Ricky and Steve more, like a video commentary track or something.  That would be awesome.  Just Ricky's popping up and cackling would be great too.  But Karl's constant opinion is more than worth the time.

Pilkington is one of the great conundrums of modern popular culture. I have no idea if he really is this dumb. Or if he's just regularly dumb but smart enough to know how to take an opportunity when it presents itself. Or if it's the Andy Kaufmanest Andy Kaufmanesque joke in the history of humor. All equally amusing possibilities.

I'm the first to be skeptical of anything, but I don't think there's a chance Karl Pilkington is a "character" or amazing performer discovered by Gervais and Merchant.  They discovered a complete moron who is endlessly entertaining and exploited him for all he's worth for our benefit.

As I said I'm cool either way. This doesn't change how amusing I find his suffering.

Am late to the party on the Pilkington phenomenon, so I've been catching up with this series on demand. Great stuff so far. I love travelogues, and a genuinely funny approach to this kind of show is always welcome. I think my fave moment is when he disappears round the corner to get away from the bull riding, there's a beat, then he comes running back to get away from bees.

It's 100% a character, because there's comedy timing involved, and there are moments each episode when he's clearly working from material. His analogies in particular are not off the cuff comments from an "empty headed chimp like moron", they're just not. Another giveaway is that although he's mostly amazing at staying locked in character, unlike say Sacha Baron Cohen, there are a few tiny moments of weakness, where if you pay attention you can see a fleeting glimpse of an unintended, intelligent smile. But that said, Pilkington is definitely great. I think the real feat is how subtle and line blurring his performance can be (hook this guy up with Ken Loach for some kind of hard hitting drama set among the northern working class, and he could win awards!). And that's combined with a great fish out of water concept- the ignorant and incurious "Little Englander" as world traveller, which is worked for maximum laughs. Some stunning images here too e.g. that timelapse shot of the sun setting on the beach (where the sunlight gets swallowed up by clouds) took my breath away.

Anyone that's heard all the original XFM radio shows knows it's not a character. It's just not.

I've heard the original shows.  While I dont believe Karl is a character, I do think he's learned to play along with the perception of him at least a little bit.

Anyone watching season two? I think I like it even better than the first one. Loved his joy at completing the bungee jump from four feet off the ground. Vanuatu, so gorgeous. And the stuff with the transexuals was magic. This (and The Trip) is how all travelogue shows should be.

And I don't give a fuck about the original XFM radio shows, it's more obvious than ever that Pilkington is some kind of created persona. Way too much genuinely funny on the spot improvisation going on for it to be anything else.

His phone conversation with Warwick while in the dwarf village was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen on TV.  Ever.

I've just seen a couple episodes, but if Karl was a 'character', he'd be much more buffoon-y, IMO.  There were a few sympathetic moments in the eps I saw - it really seems to be more of an "average ignorant schmuck abroad".
That said, some of the culturally insensitive stuff was a bit rough to watch.

Weird that they blurred out the face part of those head cross-sections in the medical museum.

The Mt. Fuji episode was amazing, and actually quite touching. The name he picked for his new invention ruined me. Some absolutely STUNNING shots too, really made me want to go there. This show is genius.

The bit where he's in Vanuatu, about a foot off the ground, trembling with fear and psyching himself up, prior to doing the "bungee" made me laugh till snot flew out of my nose.

I've only watched the first couple of episodes of series 2.  Need to rectify that.
