House of 1000 Corpses (2003)

This would have been the perfect movie for me to see when I was 14, when it first came out. Unfortunately, I first saw it when I was 16, and thought it was pretty awful. Two years can make so much of a difference.

This film was necessary, I suppose, for Rob Zombie to transition from music video director to film director. But the 16mm cutaways are almost just too goddamned much at first. Somewhere around the halfway mark, though, I always find myself enamored by Mr. Zombie's approach. He throws everything he can at the wall, and it's surprising how much of it actually sticks. The last fifteen minutes especially go off the rails, with mud zombies and a beaked mad surgeon and a giant man with an axe for no goddamned reason.

But some great touches, like that endless crane execution shot and the surprisingly disturbing bunny chase really do make this a special film, even if it's not a particularly good one.

It's a relatively bad movie, but for me, there are a few special scenes that make Corpses memorable:

1) The introductory scene with Captain Spaulding, which unfolds into the serial killer dark ride. There isn't that much to it, but I like how it layers the creepiness of the exhibits with the overarching menace of Spaulding. Plus, sideshow dark rides are fucking disturbing and gross to begin with.

2) The zombie/demon pit sequence, if only because it's left wonderfully unexplained. "Lesser" movies would've tacked on a five minute exposition sequence explaining what these things are, why they respond to the chanting, and how the family discovered them.

I have a soft spot in my heart for House of 1,000 Corpses. I'll admit that The Devil's Rejects is the more realistic and disturbing movie of the two, though. Even though they got killed, I would love to live in a county where Tom Towles was the sheriff and Walton Goggins was his number-one deputy. biggrin.gif

Yeah, the entire beginning with Captain Spaulding is the best that House Of 1000 Corpses has to offer. Well, other than great performances by a host of awesome character actors like Bill Mosley, Tom Towles, Walton Goggins, and Karen Black.

Agreed. The one problem I really have with House is that Spaulding isn't in it enough. Even if you don't like the films, I don't think you can deny that Zombie and Haig created a great character in Capt. Spaulding.

Aside from Captain Spaulding, I'm a big fan of the Dr. Satan stuff, maybe because it pops out of nowhere and makes zero sense. The rest of the film is horrible.
