Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R) commemorated the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, telling a gathering of Alabamians that he didn't see skin color as a divisive factor. When it came to religion, however, the recently-inaugurated governor raised some eyebrows with a comment on his view of non-Christians in his state.

"So anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister, and I want to be your brother," Bentley said in his address, according to The Birmingham News, after telling the congregation that he was "color blind."

Questioned by The News about the suggestive nature of his statement, communications director Rebekah Caldwell Mason clarified, ''He is the governor of all the people, Christians, non-Christians alike."

While Bentley himself promised to become "the governor of all the people" on Monday, the new governor was never shy about his Christian faith during his campaign (he is a deacon at his Baptist church in Tuscaloosa and has been supported by a number of religious leaders). Since winning in November, he has also continued to tout his religious credentials on a variety of issues.

Even for Alabama, I'm fucking disappointed.

I think, at the moment at least, I am less concerned with this guy's ability to effectively govern, guarantee equal protection, and the like; and more with the latest, perhaps most blatant fucking example of the flashing neon hypocrisy of the Christian right.  If this was an elected official of any other theological or philosophical stripe, they would be calling for his immediate ouster, saying he is dangerous, Un-American, etc.  It just galls me to no end.

Fuck him.  Plus, he said he was "color blind," which is a horribly offensive, racist, fantasy statement used by people who have seek to cover t heir ass when it comes to race.  The simple fact of the matter is nobody is color blind; to pretend otherwise is just ignorance.  What's more offensive, that you look at a person and accept their face as part of their identity, or act as if it doesn't exist?  Color blind always sounds like a euphanisim for "I'm going to pretend you're white" to me.

"But he's saying he WANTS to be your brother! Can't you silly people just accept Jesus Christ into your heart?"

Ugh. That's how they see it. I just wish they could, for a moment, see how uncomfortable it makes the rest of us.

And this comes as a surprise to nobody who has ever lived in Alabama, passed through Alabama, or even looked at the state on a map. It's refreshing to see it out in the open, honestly.

There is that element. At least you know clearly where the guy stands.

And of course, any criticism of this remark will be deflected with "You're infringing upon my right to discriminate against other people!"

The insulting, paternalistic religiosity of the Christians knows no bounds. "No, I don't hate you! I love you! I just feel sorry for you since you're going to hell, because, you know, god hates you"

These people have no place in government. I honestly believe that. If your religion tells you that people who don't share your faith are somehow lesser? That you don't have to share a sense of common humanity with them ("you're not my brother!")? Then you have no place ruling over the lives of people who don't share your faith

Assuming every Christian in the world thinks and feels exactly like this guy doesn't seem hateful, though.

I don't know.  I'm sorta glad you fuckers are all going to hell.  You seem like shifty bastards to me.

Buncha libruls.

I'm from North Alabama and there are quite a few that a very pissed off about this.  It's no big surprise the guy's a Bible-thumper, but he wasn't in office a full day, and he's already getting lampooned on Conan.  People are always going to think people from Alabama are nothing but religious fanatics and white trash, but it certainly doesn't help.

Alabama isn't as homogeneous as most think.
