MOVIE OF THE DAY: OSS 117: CAIRO, NEST OF SPIES

Elisabeth is seduced by the stupidity of OSS 117. You will be too, once you see him in his bathing suit.

Interesting point about the French and their relations with Muslims within the framework of the movie. Maybe they are exorcising some fucked up demons.

Anyway, yes, this movie is hysterical. Jean Dujardin reminds me of a hunkier Sacha Baron Cohen, and he pulls off the swinging spy and plainspoken dumbass dichotomy particularly well. This and the sequel "Lost In Rio" (which I think is even funnier) are far far funnier than the similar Austin Powers gagfests, and I'm surprised they aren't much bigger. Seriously, guys, these movies are hilarious, see them immediately.

OSS 117 is awesome, but you guys missed half the jokes, due to subs or translation.

And Dujardin is more talented than Cohen.

I watched the majority of this film on Netflix WI and found it lighthearted and mostly amusing. Gotta revisit it sometime now that it made the MOD.

Jean Dujardin is pretty fucking sick. People around these parts need to see 99 francs immediately. Get ahold of it any way you can. I was lucky enough to see it in a deutsch kino and the film flat out rocked. Let me clarify: I saw a French film dubbed in German without the aid of mind altering narcotics and it rock my fucking world. Honestly, 99 francs hit me as hard as Trainspotting did the first time I saw it.

Great write-up, Elisabeth. You nailed it when you said this movie (and it's sequel) has a lot of charm. Dujardin's casually superior attitude is pretty fun. He's kind of like Clouseau's more refined, slightly less clumsy cousin.

Aww, thanks. I thought I undersold it...and you know, it's hard to write about comedies without veering into spoiler territory.  What else is there to say but man, I think it's funny -- but you might not!

So, thanks. And I'm totally going to watch Rio this weekend.  It's on Instant Watch and I won't lie, I squeaked with joy.  Unfortunately, it will probably be my one Dujardin fix because Netflix doesn't have 99 Francs. Seems to be unavailable to buy except from two vendors on Amazon. :/  I'm surprised. Netflix usually has a pretty good supply of French films, at least from my Yankee perspective.

Just got round to this one; didn't realize it was a parody of an existing series of spy novels and films from France. It's both a better-realized counterfeit of the 60s spy film, and full of subtler humor than anything Austin Powers or The Pink Panther series ever aimed for.

Netflix Instant doesn't want to format the film correctly for my TV, but it was still a treat. Looking forward to the next one, assuming it has the same principal cast and crew.

I enjoyed the sequel more, I think. I had a bit of trouble with the first one with 117 being such a smallish prick. At least in the 2nd one he seems more oblivious, but that could just be my memory.
