Beyond Re-animator? Why?

I hate to post a topic only to bitch, but am I the only one who thinks that BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR sounds like absolute garbage? A Spanish prison movie? Just because Yuzna operates from Spain? Yuzna is a hack. He may as well change his name to Charlie Band. His BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR was terrible. I guess there is a really good reason Stuart Gordon-- the obvious talent behind the gem that is the original Re-Animator-- has stayed away from these ill-conceived sequels. I hope Gordon is toiling on an original project elsewhere while this sure to be travesty starts rolling....

Well, I like some Full Moon pics..... I like some Yuzna too....

I think sequels can usually be attributed to 2 things.

1) the cash cow....

They rushed for a blair Witch 2, and the first one was not even a very good movie. Why? they had the money tide and wanted to ride it out.

But Re-Animator never did good in first run. It is only a cult classic. Sure, Horror seems to be having something of a resurgence right now (praise be to any and all entities responsible for that!) but ANY horror movie has as much chance to pull in some cash then.

unless it is reason 2...

2) esablished fan-base or story...

It is like going to write a book, but you can forget to write the whole first 2 chapters. it has been done for you, and you already have peopole who have read this far. Now it woudl be NICE if they planned to stay true to at least the basic spirit of the story, but as we have seen FAR too many times in Horror, they don't. they use the sequel as a selling point to get a green light. Were i a producer, a new horror title woudl have a way better chance to get funded than a sequel, unless i was damn sure the sequel made sense.

Thats what gives me nightmares. the fact that Halloween 3 and Exorcist 2 were ever made in the first place.

Don't knock Halloween 3. It's flawed, but it's still hands down the best and most creative of the lame Halloween sequels. And you have to admire the fact that Carpenter and Hill planned to release an ALL NEW, SELF CONTAINED Halloween sequel each year that would give an up and coming new talent a change to establish themself. Too bad the masses just wanted the SAME thing (done more stupidly each time out) over and over again...

Hey Mech...

"2 more days to halloween... halloween.... halloween..."

Oooooohhh, spooky. Come on, that was horrid. haha. The best sequel has been H20. How can you even think maggot masks could compare with that?

Now admittedly, i would have loved to see it become an annual anthology off sorts, with the central theme being halloween, but the stories different. I am not defending the other sequels (except maybe H20). But it DOES illustrate my point that the whole reason they called it Halloween was to draw the pre-established money crowd, and the story had NOTHING to do ith the original story.

We went from there being one bad ass.... to now having covens of techno witches rying to take over the world. Don't get me started on the whole Thorn crap either.

Excorcist 2 was a bit closer to the original story, but it was hellaciously bad. they look like they wanted a Dreamscape/Scanners type picture.... but figured they culd base it on the McNeil girl to call it a sequel and draw in the cash.

There are good sequels out there. they are rare, but they do exist. Some even deviate from the original story, and pull it off.

Season of the Witch was NOT one of them........

I don't know, I don't see 'Beyond' being made for the money, to be honest. It's been many years since 'Bride' came out, and even that didn't do all that well money-wise, so how can they think making a third sequel at this late date would generate huge revenue?

To me I've always seen this project as more something they felt they needed to do. Yuzna said many times he didn't want Dr.Wests' story to end like it did at the end of 'Bride', and 'Beyond' was something to get out of his system.

Maybe I just love Combs too much, but I have hopes for this movie.

gratuitous gore, a wiggy Combs performance, and probably some nudity. what more could anyone possibly want?

Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli.

Yuzna told us Stuart Gordon has an idea for a fourth Re-Animator. And from what I've seen and read about the movie so far it looks really cool.

I cannot wait for the new Re-animator movie. I have great hope for this movie. I love the other two films and am a rabid fan of Yuzna. Oh yes, I will definitely own this one.

Yeah, can't really argue with that, but it could still be good. I mean, it was written by the guy that did 'Fright Night 2', and that was a damn fine sequel.

The Tejada-Flores guy ? He also wrote Faust remember, which doesn't bode well.

But Fright Night Part 2 was a whole bunch of fun and looking at his filmography I see he also wrote Psychic, a fairly enjoyable little seen George (My Bloody Valentine)Mihalka riff on Ally Sheedy's Fear and The Dead Zone starring Zach Galligan and Christian Duguay's Screamers which I caught on the big screen in the UK and had a blast with.

Plus it's a Re Animator picture with Jeffrey Combs in it: how is it not in some way going to be enjoyable ?

I'm one of those curmudgeons who wishes they'd stopped the Halloween Series after 2 (I think viewed back-to-back, the first two are just excellent bookends), and I'm also one of the H3 knockers--I mean, clockwork automatons? Strictly Full Moon type stuff. But a lot of people whose taste I respect like H3, so hey, whatever melts your butter.

I'm looking forward to the new Re-Animator, since the first one is one of my faves. I thought "Bride" was too toned down and kind of dumb, but everything I hear about "Beyond" makes me optimistic. Plus, as everyone has said, Combs is a god. I'm kind of hoping for a "Bride of Frankenstein" type riff, with Combs in the Colin Clive/Henry Frankenstein role and whoever the new guy is as a "Dr. Praetorius" kind of dude.

But as long as there's plenty of gore, plenty of glowing reagent, and at least a little sex, I think it'll play well. Not that there HAS to be sex for a good movie, but come on--this is RE-ANIMATOR we're talking about. I think it's a requirement.
