A second Sun is coming, one that promises to banish the night and shower the earth and those living on it with gold, silver and all the precious metals of the universe. The spark of creation will be unleashed in a fiery super nova that will sweep through our galaxy like a seraphic wind, and you reading this message may well live to witness it

PS This has captured my imagination since I learned about it, so expect me to keep you abreast of the situation as it develops. A Second Sun.. how on earth would ancient peoples look at such an event? I can't help but remember that Alexander was known in Egypt as Alexander Amon Ra, Pharaoh of Egypt and understood to be the Son of Ra, sun god and supreme deity. How would the Cult of Alexander react to such an event? The Sun is the oldest, most powerful and primitive force in the human psyche. When the sun goes away, people get SAD. What can we expect when the Second Sun has dawned and banished the night altogether? I can't even imagine

Jeeze, Tzu..  I'd think that the appearance of a second star in the day time sky and abolition of night itself would be news whose implications would be of interest to even those outside my blogosphere

You got it, Ken. Betelgeuse. Though from the article, it says that the earth may be showered in silver and gold, so we can't be *that* far away, all things considered

Is it really possible for them to know that the radiation ETC will be totally harmless? Or could it sterilize the globe in a split second, effectively ending civilization in the blink of an eye? I don't profess to know, I just ask the question

I give it three more posts until someone makes a golden shower joke.   Oops, too late.

What's with the craze of all these inaccurate news stories about the stars these days?

1) The article doesn't say that, 2) that would be retarded.

"Capturing your imagination" is a good way to put it.  The article and the BS science behind it is embarassing.  Here, take some cold, hard facts:

That article doesn't really "disprove" anything. The original HUFFPO piece makes clear that it *might* explode in 2012, and this man felt that it was likely to happen in the near future. No one was trying to tie this into the Mayan thing, other than the year being mentioned. The article makes no mention of Mayans, and furthermore doesn't suggest any sort of doomsday

Neither do I. I think that a second sun could be beneficial

1) Actually it does:

Quote:
In fact, a neutrino shower could be beneficial to Earth. According to Carter this "star stuff" makes up the universe. "It literally makes things like gold, silver - all the heavy elements - even things like uranium....a star like Betelgeuse is instantly forming for us all sorts of heavy elements and atoms that our own Earth and our own bodies have from long past supernovi," said Carter.

How could it be beneficial to *Earth* if the gold ETC is just shot off into space? The article clearly implies free loot

2) No, it's pretty rad, IMHO

Again, no one, including Huffpo, was predicting imminent disaster, or saying it had to do with the Mayans

you're a moron if you think any gold or silver fused in a super nova 600 light years away is going to come anywhere near earth.

Kate, your article involves science so silly that it wouldn't even be in an episode of Fringe.  It's CSI: Miami science.

Also, not having night would SUCK.  I shouldn't have to tell you why.

The article if full on fantasy.  It's all conjecture and speculation.  Hell, I can make up a story about giant, evil lemur gods* coming to earth and using people as personal scrotum scratchers and use the same kind of silly double-speak that the article does to sound real.  And you couldn't "disprove" me either.  PK, your disain and hate for religion is laughable when you promote made up science like in this article.  This article is just as made up as any religious mumbo jumbo yet because you reaaaaallly want something like this to happen and be "cool" you glam all over it like its going to happen.

*This response has been approved by the giant, evil lemur gods from Xxxnhfgapkls.

But guys! 2012! Supernovas!

I don't know who irritates me more. The superstitious kooks with their beliefs in ancient mumbo jumbo? The half-informed kooks latching on every pseudoscientific half fact? The New Age "spiritual" fence sitting kooks?

The universe is so filled to the brim with absolutely humbling majesty and beauty that I'm actually insulted by those making "impressive" stuff up to fill whatever stupid void exists in them. Read and learn about that. Try to fathom the scale and power of a single quasar if you want awe and wonder. There's no need for nonsense. The hard scientific facts are way more than enough.

You're not.  Lets hope what Nick said in his "Questions" article will soon come to fruition.

After further research, it seems that Huff Po may have been exaggerating the case for this Second Sun scenario. For the record though, I still think this is a very cool story. Plenty of news stories involve hypothesis and speculation, and if what is being talked about came to pass, it still would be pretty neat (IMHO)

I agree that the gold thing doesn't really make sense. I get the feeling that the original reporting must have been edited somewhere along the line, because I don't really get how the statement "The neutrino shower could be beneficial to earth" connects with the rest of the paragraph which talks about precious metals. If it's not talking about gold, it never makes clear what beneficial use this explosion would offer us (beyond the temporary elimination of the night on a global scale)

And even better would be the science! Oh my, a close supernova like that would be a huge boon to astronomy. The ones we see are all so far away that details are too small to detect, but one that close would be like having it under the microscope*. We’d learn a huge amount. The funny thing is, it would be so bright astronomers would have a hard time using their best equipment, which would get swamped with all that light. I wonder how many amateur astronomers would suddenly find themselves able to do science the professionals couldn’t…

And of course, the best thing of all in having Betelgeuse explode is that it would bring billions of people outside and looking up. Betelgeuse is in a part of the sky that makes it visible everywhere on Earth but pretty much the south pole. Far from being a harbinger of doomsday, it might actually be the single greatest benefit to astronomy that’s happened in hundreds of years.

Take that, Mayan apocalypse fearmongers!
