One of the most unheralded must-follow filmmakers.

Add Men with Guns to that list of must-see Sayles. A great film set in South America, about a idealistic doctor who goes off to visit former students who went off into the wilderness to practice medicine....and what he finds.

Not to dumb down the conversation, but didn't Sayles also co-write that crazy Jurassic Park IV script where dinosaurs had weapons attached to them? Why didn't they make that yesterday?

Anyway, Sayles is an incredibly important filmmaker and it pisses me off that his last efforts struggle to get financing and distribution. Might be the titles. "Brother From Another Planet" and "Return of the Secaucus Seven" (both awesome) have far better titles than "Casa De Los Babys" and "Amigo".

Good. This column is back. And with a great addition. I love Lone Star. Such a well written movie. It's a damn shame Sayles isn't in more people's minds when there's talk about great writers.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Matewan is one of the most underseen, underrated American masterpieces ever. As Much as I love City of Hope (and I do - it feels at times like a proto-The Wire), Matewan is the man's masterpiece.

Just adding to the City of Hope love here. We need help in the building!

Surprised The Brother From Another Planet didn't rate a mention though. And we can't leave out Battle Beyond the Stars.
