The Official Top Gear UK/US Discussion Thread

New Year, New Stig and a New Top Gear.  Lots lot like here, landing a Helecopter on a Skoda for one,  James May's awesome goggles while driving the new Atom for another and of course a little known comedian from Liverpool smashing Tom Crusie's lap time round the track.

Oh and i'd by that Jag in a heartbeat, if they ever made it (and I had the money).

I am very glad to have this back.

OMG, DOUBLE THREAD!!! What does it mean?!

It was like a quadruple thread a few minutes ago.  Someone was way to excited about a car show.

Not just any car show...THE car show. The one, the only. TOP GEAR!OMGZ!

(I've got this episode downloading as we speak, will watch it in the morning)

How would you gentlemen feel about me tidying up all these threads? The Top Gear Brigade is small enough as it is. No need spreading the posts around.

Yes please, I posted in the bugs thread about it. I got that please wait prompt and when it went away I had four threads, weird....

I'd still by the Jag though.

Calling it now, the new Stig is an ex rally driver.  Still another great show even if the Ashes were a tad one sided.

Nope. Stig is Sabine. Or at least that's how my dreams go.

And how much shit are these guys going to get for the Mexico stuff?

I dont even care how much shit they get in...it was hilarious. Also...those 3 GTOs make up all my car dreams. It was amazing to see them together (even though they couldnt drive the 250). There's something about that raw "no way can this be street legal" feeling the 288 and 599 give. Just bonkers! Also, I think whoever the Stig is, they have some serious rally experience. Look at how he/she controlled that Proton on the rally stage.

The 250 GTO may very well the most beautiful car ever. It's a damn work of art. There are only two cars that them having a 12 million pound price wouldn't bother me. This and the Bugatti Atlantic.

I was Half expecting Chris Evans (the owner of said car) to drive it with Clarkson in tow, that would have been cool. i think the Mexican stuff may have been offset by Clarkson's bit about Oz at the end of the show.

The Mexican stuff came across rather uncomfortable and mean spirited compared to their usual piss-taking, particularly with Hammond joining in and dragging it out. I think I get why they did it* but it still felt rather off to me.

* There's been a furore in the media here this week over a couple of football presenters who were sacked for sexist comments made completely off-camera (and I believe off show hours too?) which were made public. While boorish and unpleasant, it was basically two idiots privately gossiping and bitching about a match having a female linesman/women in football in general and should really just fall under 'personal opinion' as the comments weren't made during the game/programme. Clarkson's been quite vocal about what a farce the whole thing's been so it really wouldn't surprise me if the Mexican comments were thinly-veiled trolling the media/an attempt to make some kind of point about it.

He made some not so sublte comments at the National Televison awards as well.

The Mexican ambassador is very upset....

Yeah, the 250 GTO is pretty much the most beautiful car ever built. I dont think anything will ever top it.

I'd go for the Jag E-Type, but that's like choosing between Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson.

The segment where Clarkson tries to prove that the Yeti is the best car in the world, culminating in trying to land a frickin' helicopter on it, was golden.

BBC's response to the Mexico brouhaha.

Quote:
“The Executive Producer for Top Gear has written to the Mexican Ambassador and apologised for the comments made about him during the show. On the broader issue of comments about Mexicans as people, the show has explained they were making comic use of a stereotype; a practice with which regular viewers of Top Gear will be familiar.

“We are sorry if we have offended some people, but jokes centred on national stereotyping are a part of Top Gear's humour, and indeed a robust part of our national humour. Our own comedians make jokes about the British being terrible cooks and terrible romantics, and we in turn make jokes about the Italians being disorganised and over dramatic; the French being arrogant and the Germans being over organised. When we do it, we are being rude, yes, and mischievous, but there is no vindictiveness behind the comments.

“This stereotyping humour is in itself a factor in the tolerance which the ambassador states is so prevalent in Britain.

“In line with that tradition, stereotype based comedy is allowed within BBC guidelines in programmes where the audience has clear expectations of that being the case, as indeed it is with Top Gear. Whilst it may appear offensive to those who have not watched the programme or who are unfamiliar with its humour, the Executive Producer has made it clear to the Ambassador that that was absolutely not the show’s intention.”

In short "Sorry you got offended, but that's what we do and we're not stopping." Nice. And the next episode is in Albania. A whole new country for Clarkson to offend.

Watching the newest episode of Top Gear is always one of my weekly highlights.

That was a very funny episode. I always like it when one of them dies.

Anyway, the RS 500 looks positively satanic and the Volvo PCP seems to be completely mad. And whether you believe it or not, the story about the Albanian minister being in a stolen car is 100% accurate. Half of the Mercedes shown in this episode were probably stilen from Greece.

It seems like some of you get to watch this even sooner, but I don't get to see these until just about now - on Monday nights.  The "three-wise men" episode was awesome.  However, I must admit that I just about lost it when James got knocked down by the rope.  I was sad to see him get hurt, but I cried I was laughing so hard.  He was so stiff and he fell so fast.  And the rigged stereo was a riot as well.

Amber Heard was a great guest, I van see why Clarkson loved her so much. And she made me actully want to watch Drive Angry.  Didn't care for the Audi of BMW to much but that Combine harvester snow plow idea was genuis.

Yeah, for once they actually proposed something that has a chance of working. And Heard is so damn tasty.

Yeah, Amber was great fun. Pity she drives like my grandad, mind.

Amber Heard was a great guest. And that combine snowplow thing was genius. So funny with the flame thrower.

Oh, have mercy. A 959 an F40 and the SEV? I'm geeking out so hard.

My thirteen year old self is probably having a stroke right now.

Clarkson vs God was pretty good as was his face off with Prescott.  I also loved the bit with the Lunar Rover.

Yeah, the 959 and F40 bit was a total teenage dream sequence for me.

Ugh at there being no more episodes til June.

Because the new season started on Sunday, I've made this thead the Official Top Gear Discussion Thread. I've noticed there are like 20 threads about Top Gear, so to clean all the discussion up I've done this.

With the exception of the ever-affable May the gang have really started to grate on me in their non-TG appearances.

Son of a bitch! I can't believe new Top Gear is out and I didn't notice.

I hate that I have to watch it in reruns on BBC America in a few months.  I would rather be watching it right now dammit.

Finalgear.com has torrents of the episodes.

Loved this episode and kind of fell in love with the skeleton bob sleigh gold medalist.

You know what? By all accounts I should hate Clarkson's guts. Whether this is really him or an exaggerated persona, I should logically detest him. But when your first introduction to someone is him saying that putting on sunglasses makes him look like a cross between a Sopwith Camel and an ostrich, or complaining that Cypriot lesbians keep stealing his parking spots, or that his first time driving on a track he panicked, undid the seatbelt and tried to get to the back seat while the car was doing 100mph, you're kind of stuck.

Expose yourself to his newspaper columns. His one saving grace is that he'll happily stand up for the BBC.

Believe me I know. I've been reading his stuff since his Performance Car days.

I want that BMW 1M so hard. Looks like tons of fun.

I still enjoy JC but I avoid the shit out of the Hamster when he's not on the show. I'd rather listen to Jedwood for five hours than hear him interviewed again.

Wasn't the best episode but I'm amazingly excited that it's started up again.....

So far so good, both new episodes have been relatively car-oriented rather than bad comedy-oriented.

I would so watch a show with Clarkson, Hammond and May as 70's cops.  Great stuff.

Yup. The contagious mustaches were awesome. As was that Lotus. If that uncoordinated geezer managed to beat Stig's time with the V8 Atom I really want to see Stig give it a go.

The surpless army stuff was fun as well.  I'm planning to by a new car with my upcoming redundancy payout I wonder how the wife would feel about a tank?

It really was like a toy shop. They made bad choices though. Doesn't the UK army have any M 88s or something equivalent? I pretty much guarantee that with a couple of them they'd pulverize those houses within an hour. 56 tonnes of steel with an 17900cc turbocharged engine. Damn, I loved driving tanks.

So I just have to say that even though the MP4-12C was the second fastest car around the Top Gear track, I'd still take the 458 Italia always.

Of course. It's not even a contest. This was exactly what 5th Gear said, too. The MP4-12C is very fast (even though they didn't find it that much faster than the 458) but otherwise it's a pretty blah car. Tiff especially fucking hated it.

There's nothing about the car that makes me go "holy crap that car is amazing". The 458 on the other hand is something created by the gods.

Presumably Prometheus? Isn't the 458 the one that has a habit of spontaneously combusting?

They resolved that issue almost a year ago.

Pretty good final eppisode all in all. Need to rewatch as I missed huge chunks of the Eletric Car bit.  Those soliders were pretty inspiring but was very suprised to see old Stig there.  Prehaps they buried the hatchet?

I found the last 6 episodes to be a bit meh. Perhaps because I watched through the previous 5 seasons with the excellent challenges and reminisced about the North Pole episode and watched that too. I feel this season came up a little short. Oh well, another six episodes later this year early next.

It was nice seeing my old stomping ground of Lincoln/Grimsby/Cleethorpes (actually pretty much North east Lincolnshire). I spotted a couple of Chippies I used to go to and they went really close to my old house, I haven't seen that area since I left the UK in 1998. I did like that Nissan though.

Did you know they are flogging the Fiat 500 for almost 22 grand over here? WTF?
