What the hell happened there? Discuss.

Good question.  Whatever it is, it's a damn shame.

Just watched Spartan about a week ago. Would kill for some sort of follow up with that character, especially given how it ended...

He has a reputation for being difficult to work with, so maybe that's one reason why his career sort of derailed.

Still, I liked him in 2008's Felon and (according to his IMDB page) he's got like 5-6 films coming out this year, so hopefully we see more great performances from him.

Good question

Let it be known: I am a huge Kilmer fan. HUGE fan. He's one of the finest actors of his generation, and I think the guy is all kinds of amazing. Far too many of my favorite performances of all time belong to him for me to call him anything other than a "master thespian"

With that said, I have no clue what is going on with his career, it's completely heart breaking

I can understand the "not giving a crap" and the desire to cash in, but surely there are actual studio films which he could enliven, rather than these DT DVD abominations?

Sure, he's OK in a few of 'em, but wow.. when he turns up in stuff like BLTPOCNOLA or MACGRUBER, he just makes every moment he's on screen crackle and the movie look that much better for his having appeared in it

Does anyone know what the deal is? How is the Huckleberry of Hollywood essentially shunned from the feature films business? Is it that he's viewed as a "problem" actor, and people don't want to work with him? Or has he just had some kind of personal breakdown?

EDIT: ALEXANDER. See it. His Phillip II of Macedon is just note perfect. It's a one of a kind demonstration of flawless acting talent and bottomless charisma. The list of actors I could realistically believe could have fathered Alexander The Great is extremely short. He's on it

I was pondering this after watching REAL GENIUS for the first time recently. (yes I'm aware that's ridiculous considering I'm 34).

Bad rep, did not play the hollywood game like his colleagues such as Cruise.

He also turned down some plum roles, like Morpheus in THE MATRIX.

I think he also has a lot of outside interests. Spends a lot of time in africa helping the poor etc.

And he got really fat:

I remember thinking that Kiss Kiss Bang Bang would jump-start Kilmer's fading career, like how Pulp Fiction made Travolta relevant again.  And after quickly scanning Kilmer's IMDB page, I realized I was wrong.  So very wrong.

But hey, he was funny in MacGruber.

He was so great in KISS KISS, BANG BANG. In theory that film should belong to Downey Jr., but Kilmer does so much with surprisingly limited screentime. Everything I've heard about him suggests that he's kind of intense and apathetic at the same time, he only works if he has to or something speaks to him but if you get him passionate about something he's kind of monstrously dickish about protecting his vision. Really need to see McGruber at some point.

Apparently, Val Kilmer is still playing Jim Morrison.

Come on Art, both Orson and Marlon looked thin and gorgeous in their heyday as well remember...

He's got a ways to go before he has a hard time fitting through doorways.  One thing that's been interesting for a while has been his choice of projects around his home in New Mexico, like he doesn't want to stray too far (aside from shooting the occasional DTV flick in eastern Europe, of course).
