Nobody planning on making a bad movie!

I would be VERY surprised if a movie this big comes out in time for 2012. They'd literally have to start shooting TODAY. Post-production alone needs to be at the very least 5-8 months. This is late-2012 or early-2013, for sure.

Yeah, I can't see this coming out before summer 2013. 2012 is already a huge year for films - give us something to look forward to after the 12/21/12 apocalypse!

I think they're aiming for 2012 though because it's some sort of Godzilla anniversary, right? I dunno, they're gonna have to hustle big time.

From what I've heard of Monsters, there may not be a whole lotta Godzilla in this Godzilla movie, so post-production could be a breeze.

I'm fairly certain they can get this done in 23 months or less if there are no major delays and they're intent on doing so. Any number of reasons they would push it back though- packed 2012 not least among them.

What kind of logic makes you think that Godzilla will be anything like Monsters in regards to how much is shown of the creatures? Gareth Edwards isn't the "Don't Show the Giant Monsters" guy. It's not like that's his fetish. He's the guy who made a low-budget movie where he didn't/couldn't show much of the giant monsters, and made it work. He could NEVER get away with that in a friggin' Godzilla movie.

People seem to be expecting "Godzilla by way of The American" with this flick. I'm pretty sure we'll have more daikaiju action than we saw in, say, The Host, Cloverfield or even the Godzilla remake. Edwards was chosen because he knows the physics of story, emotion and payoff when it comes to monster movies, and now we'll see how he applies that with a giant budget and with the King of Monsters.

Well said.  This statement alone makes me really want to see this flick now.

It was a snarky crack - I didn't think it required much in the way of logic or fairness to the director. In fact, that stuff usually gets in the way of good snark. My apologies.

As a brief aside, every time I see "Gareth" I think of Jareth Cutestory.

Three things I don't want to see in the big G's US return:

1. Godzilla running from the military. This pretty much goes against everything good about Big G films.

2. Asexual reproduction of Raptor clones

and of course:

3. Godzooky

Thats a bingo.  I loved Monsters and I love giant monster movies, so this seems like an obvious home-run to me.

Gareth Edwards could be the first director of a US Godzilla film to create a...Monster Hit. There are a few things I would like to see. One, I'd like to see, Godzilla crack open the UN Building, and treat it's inhabitants like they were part multi national buffet! It would be goofy yet fun, to see, The Big G, use the top of, The Chrysler Building as a...Toothpick afterwards. I wouldn't mind seeing Godzilla accidentally step on a look alike of Roland Emmerich. I want the Military either US, or UN Security Forces with tech like was seen in...Godzilla Final Wars, or some of the ray guns from the Ishiro Honda era.

This has been bugging me since he was announced, but... why? Why is this an obvious home-run?

I mean, here we have a guy who went out and made a low budget road movie without a clear vision - other then using it to showcase his vfx skills - or script, shooting hundreds of hours of improvised footage in the process, and then put together a 90 minute cut that, with a barely-there story, weak characterization and pacing issues, somehow worked almost despite itself.

Whether it's the work of a seriously talented filmmaker or a total fluke propped up by good cinematography and a very good soundtrack is impossible to tell at this point, but let's give Edwards the benefit of the doubt here, and also assume that a grab at vague profundity consisting of two special effects jacking eachother off followed by a cheap twist ending is indeed proof that he "knows the physics of story, emotion and payoff when it comes to monster movies". It still doesn't change the fact that the only thing these two projects have in common is the fact that they both have giant monsters in them (barely seen in Monsters, probably front and center for long stretches in Godzilla) and are almost polar opposites in every other aspect you could name.

So what am I missing here, guys?

(And for the record, I actually like Monsters, ending and all... but like I said, I'm not sure whether or not any of what I liked about it was intentional.)
