Clean Slate Request

Thread Starter

To any of you out there that's still here or a new member:

Give me a clean slate. Don't judge me based on my decade and a half of internet presence. Don't judge me by the fallout from the redesign. Don't judge me by the List of Dumb or Podcast. Don't judge me on the Devin situation.

Let's start fresh. I'll do the same to you. I won't judge you because you trolled in the past. I won't judge you because you defended me in the past. I won't judge you because you're named after an Anime character.

Some folks whose opinion matters to me are concerned. I have refused to believe I'm at fault.

It doesn't matter. I am asking for you to give this place and me a chance so this place can be great. Better than it was. But I need some help.

You've got nothing to worry about Nick, this place is the best. It has the best content, its run by the best people. The best people come here.

Sure thing sir. Keep up the good work. Don't let yourself get down over trivial shit.

Keep truckin! I think CHUD serves a unique purpose in online film discussion: that of analysis and actual honest discussion. I know that losing Devin hurt the site a little, because he is a great writer and very analytical. On the other hand, he was usually spiteful and rude, and drove away many who were either babies at film analysis, or fell into camps of opinion that opposed the CHUD norm.

So, my point is, play to the strengths of the CHUD namesake - *inclusive* analysis and discussion. A website that really loves movies, instead of merely covering them, is a rarity. You can make a facsimile of that through elitism, faux-academic argumentation, and obsessive cataloging, but I think people can always tell the difference. I really believe there is a gap in online film discussion and reporting that you are perfectly poised to fill.

Any venture worth doing has moments of doubtfulness or the possibility of failure. I think all of you guys are doing great work, and I wish you and the crew the greatest of successes!

I like where this is heading. It's the right kind of idea.

But judging is basically all I do!!!!

... I'll be good.

No judgement here, Nick. You've always been a really cool guy and you run this website the way you want to. I agree about the film discussion, which I also don't really see anywhere else, and these are the finest messageboards around.

You're a good guy. Don't let anyone else tell you different. If a clean slate is what you want, you got it, sir.

Nick this is your site. You host it for a group of film fans who are grateful to you.

No clean slate is required.

Chud is the only site worth visiting as far as I'm concerned and it's because of its voice. The redesign has come with a fantastic new set of staff members and as many have pointed out, more content from you. Weather the storm Dude. Whatever tech issues are keeping folk at bay won't keep them away for long. The alternative to the Chud community is the AICN talkback and the fucking IMDB boards.

There is no doubt that this place will continue to go places.

This is still my home away from home, even if the wallpaper is different.

Don't judge you on the podcast?

Go fuck yourself Nick, I'm crazy for you on the podcast.

Oh, who am I kidding, I can't stay mad at you.

If more people actually listened to/watched the podcast and read the List of Dumb instead of just making their mind up what they are without sampling them, they might actually enjoy themselves.

In fact, I'd go further than that. They would enjoy themselves. Those that like to laugh, anyway.

I'm one of the most vocal supporters of the site, and i REALLY hate the list of dumb. The podcast i actually like a lot. But what drew me to the site whas a) Film Knowledge and the vibe people had. Everyone got along, had a little fun while really teaching me something new about film every day. I miss the knowledge about film. Besides Joshua's articles (He's a king amongst men) the rest of the site seems to be hell bent to just be humorous, but forgetting about film. (Renn is great and only getting better at it).

Nick, i told you MANY times before. Your film knowledge dwarfs people like me. I just hope you'd use it more often insted of being preocupied about writing silly jokes or drawing shit. Whenever you write about film and only film, you are a beast. And i love and respect you for it. But to be honest, the last few years, i've felt you've been more interested in "selling" your other persona. The humor persona. Rather than the film scholar than you are. And has taken it's toll on my love and appreciation for you and the site.

I just have one desire for the site. Teach me something. I guarantee you i'd be your fan ever after if you do.

Non but love, Tati.

The humor stuff has a value. There's a reason people still send me dumb photos at least ten times a week.

The film stuff is tough. Because I need to be instigated by something to have a take and write something worth reading. I have been doing a very decent amount of stuff with variety and plan to do a lot more. But part of the reason I have the diverse staff I do is to keep folks with a nice balance of stuff. I'm changing. I'm not the Nick of '99. Or of 2005. But I'm your Nick. And I am very dedicated to the readers. Very dedicated. Which is why I don't react well to some of the complaints.

And honestly...

If people used the 'Your Questions for Nick' thing to talk like you're talking now, it'd be a shitload better than little spats in threads. I will answer all things.

I'll echo that sentiment, no clean slate required at all in the first place.

Actually I feel bad on the redesign, I got an invite to the beta for the forums and I tested it a bit but not enough. I wish I had taken it more seriously to give you guys better feedback on the bugs that are affecting the site now. Please let us know how we can help, I tried debugging as much as I could on my end, my only complain is that it would be nice to get some more feedback from the technical people on the back-end. Please let us know how we can help.

If I can change, and you can change, then everybody can change!

Three cheers for second chances.

no worries man,

this is your baby and it shows. just means sometimes you have to clean up the crap that goes with it.

the people who care, are still here. keep up the good/(hard) work :)

It's obvious how much you care about the place, Nick.  I've been coming here for years, dammit, and will continue to do so.  I hope to become more active on the boards, for whatever that's worth.  Keep on keeping on.

You can count on my shteel!

Seriously, I have nothing but love for this site, Nick, and every contributor - past and present. I probably look like a major kiss-ass with how much affection I throw at it all. I just love this place and the people here, so much that I threw my hat into the ring when the call came for bloggers. So much that when the call came for contributors for GUY.com I was so excited to be a part of it. And that's it - I'm glad to be a part of this family, warts and all.

The content, like any site, can be hit or miss (frankly, Sam Strange's schtick, while clever, was a big miss imo), but there's a reason I keep coming back and will continue to do so.  Nick, you've always struck me as good people and I'm rooting for you and the site.

If everyone has a clean slate, does that mean Rath can get unbanned?

I still like the site. Writers like Elizabeth Rappe are great.

Rath's done. I tried the "unbanning folks" thing with the new site and most failed.

Good to know you like one writer.

Maybe I stumble around this place with rose coloured glasses and my head up my arse, but whatever has inspired this thread I've missed completely.

Nick you know this is my other home-in-my-head, but it's still your gaff at the end of the day, I'm just taking up space under your stairs.

Your slates always been pristine with me sir.

Nick Nunziata, You want me to give you a...2nd chance?   I have no problem with that Idea, Nick.  You are always above board, and, CHUD.COM, remains The Best Site on the internet, and my favorite place for articles, great writers, the well informed Chewers on and off the boards, especially the...B Action Movie Thread, the blogs, the columns, really everything.  I...Love, the list of dumb, and all on CHUD, that tickle my...Humorous bone.  New CHUD, is going as...Swimmingly for me, as CHUD CLASSIC, did.  I have no complaints, even if you do not love anime avatars or anime inspired screen names.  The only change for me, is I now post in the talkbacks as well as the boards.  Also, I...Love the, B Action Movie Column.  Don't let jerks get you down.  Remember, it is good to scream when driving.  The same is true, when people are driving you in ways you do not want to go.

I won't. I'm just illustrating, that's all.

Well at least you know he's still checking out the site/boards.

I just want to thank Nick for the opportunity to write for the site. It really means a lot to me. This site wil always be my first visit.

Why folks are upset with Nick is beyond me. I'm sorry to see it, though.

Good God, I thought that Devin's message board persona was obnoxious; that Twitter feed deserves some kind of award or at least a montage of Tweets/moment of silence presentation during an awards show.

The guy seems to be turning into a less famous Armond White.

Back on subject, no need for apologies or second chances, Nick.  The redesign was a little jarring but the kinks are getting worked out more and more each day.

And that's why the Alamo site doesn't get the time of day from me.  Let him chase away his new boss's traffic.

This is far and away my favorite movie site.  I became a member only last year but I've been a regular visitor since The Matrix came out.  I do not mean this as a backhanded compliment, but the newest iteration of CHUD has been a helluva lot smoother than Digg v4's transition and they had more resources. No doubt there have been headaches, but this has always been and remains a site Nick and fellow chewers can be proud of and for that I'm thankful.

Wow ... it seems Devin is obsessed with Chud, and more specifically getting "back" at Nick ...

http://vyou.com/devincf

"N. Nunziata is having a mental breakdown. The redesign has been a disaster. All the best members are abandoning ship. Do you feel sorry fo him?"

A: Not particularly

Seems awfully personal and vindictive ...

He's being seriously unprofessional about all this. I never had a problem with him, but this is downright awful of him, and what little respect I had for him, has disappeared.

It also seems that he's falling into that "I hate that site, but all I can do is think and talk about." hole.

Holy crap. That Devin tweet. Yeah, I think this site is way better off without being fettered with people like that.

Don't sweat it Nick. I am with CHUD till the end.

Nick, you just have to remember that even though you might see this site as a humor site, many people (myself included) see it as the site filled with writers who know fuckloads more about film than we do, which is something it's lacking at the moment.

And please, I beg of you, do something about the front page, it's nigh incoherent.

The humor helps define the site and prevents the place from becoming too staid. Sometimes the humor is right up my alley, sometimes not, but that's natural.

And the less said about DF the better.  He's a petty guy who feeds on the negativity he casts upon others.

No clean slate for you sir, as it was never dirty to begin with. I love the redesign, but dont visit the boards as much due to the fact that the MB is hell to load on my iPhone. As soon as I get decent Internet around here, I'll be back reading everything again. In the meantime, do what you do. You're a funny guy who also knows his shit, and the other writers are all great as well. Long live the LoD and whatever other ideas pop into your wonderful, heavily bearded head.

I still 100% pro-Chud (I think Rappe and Renn have really come into their own as exceptional writers and the other regular contributors all do fantastic work), but I think turning this into an Us vs. Them sort of deal vis-a-vis Devin is a bad idea. They're reacting to something you wrote initially Nick so to then try and colour them as the bad guys for having a reaction to something which feels like slander seems a little unfair. There's mutual bad blood on both sides of this, but I think all you're going to do if you keep on sniping is push out the last of the old timers who were here when Devin really came into his own as a writer.

All I'm saying is at this point it's echo chamber vs. echo chamber. You're never going to win around the Fake Life guys, but they're obviously actively looking for stuff you say to report back to Devin, Slater etc so that they can then go on about how much you suck. It's an impossible situation, but I think you've got to act like those guys don't exist, because everything you do is being scrutinised by them. Having said that I think it needs to be made clear to a bunch of the new posters here that coming onto the site as a new member and saying 'Long time lurker, but fuck that Faraci guy' is disrespectful to a writer who was amazingly talented and put a fuck ton of work into this place.

While I've been reading CHUD for what seems like forever - a decade?  more? - I never really participated on the boards, even forgetting my original login.  As such, the drama hasn't interested me much.  I don't know a lot about the he said / she said and it honestly doesn't matter to me.  This site live and dies based on content, primarily film based content.  It will continue to thrive, despite any residual drama, through the efforts of the staff and the loyalty of the readers.  New fans will come and even stay when they find commonality with the community.  Sure some regular features won't be to everyone's liking, but that shouldn't really be the goal; it would water things down too much.  Personally, I really like that you're featuring blogs for readers.  I like reading what different people have to say and are interested in cinematically.  I'm happiest when learning about new film based topics I am unfamiliar with.

I think new CHUD is a grand time to try and hop back into the community.  The site is finding its footing again and it's not only fun to watch, but I hope it's fun to participate in as well.  I look forward to wasting more time here.  And I'll continue to ignore the drama.
