David Cameron "State multiculturalism has failed"

David Cameron has criticised "state multiculturalism" in his first speech as prime minister on radicalisation and the causes of terrorism.

At a security conference in Munich, he argued the UK needed a stronger national identity to prevent people turning to all kinds of extremism.

He also signalled a tougher stance on groups promoting Islamist extremism.

The speech angered some Muslim groups, while others queried its timing amid an English Defence League rally in the UK.

As Mr Cameron outlined his vision, he suggested there would be greater scrutiny of some Muslim groups which get public money but do little to tackle extremism.

Yikes. This is kind of terrifying and kind of sad. For the past twenty years we've been making small, but important, steps towards a far more homogenised society in the UK and this speech, especially when the right wing and utterly racist EDL are rallying, is going to do a lot to shatter links which had been built up by our communities.

On this side of the pond you can hear the Conservative knees jerking to Cameron's speech -- multiculturalism is a big monster under the bed for certain "real Canadians".

The worlds turning to shit and we're reverting to our most scared, pathetic, tribal and xenophobic - same arguments are happening here in Australia.

We're still just frightened fucking apes in caves really. We like to fool ourselves cause we have iPhones but essentially we're just a bunch of monkeys flinging shit at our own reflections.

Did you mean to say "heterogenous society?"

His timing is AWFUL. and given the steady rise in nationalist extremism and the quietening down of prominent Islamic nuttiness I question his choice of target. The fact that he's already thrown his lot in with some of the scummiest right-wingers on the continent is the icing on the cake. Thanks again, Nick Clegg!

Political opportunism at it's most vile. The Con Dems need a boost in the poles, so our PM plays the 'fear of others' card.

The EDL can go fuck themselves. Preferably with a broken coke bottle.
