Affleck to rescue diplomats with the power of sci-fi.

Just read about this the other day, and it sounds absolutely fascinating, though oddly familiar.  I seem to remember a movie with Alec Baldwin and Matthew Broderick that had a very similar plot.  Something about a government agency (I think it was the CIA) setting up a fake movie as cover for some secret operation.  Maybe I'm wrong, or I just dreamt that.  Also, I'm too lazy to look it up right now and confirm.

Either way, I'm excited for this one.  After the one two punch of Gone Baby Gone and The Town, I'm down with anything Affleck directs, so I say bring it on.

Cool. I hope Kirby gets specifically name-checked.

The question is to what degree they'll focus on the stuff that was happening in Los Angeles. My understanding is that they were, among other things, sending out casting calls, to keep the illusion that it was a real production. How weird would that be? "Yeah, I read for Argo. Didn't get the part, but I helped save the lives of American diplomats."

Exactly what I thought of. The Last Shot.

Hilarious movie, also based on a true story. It was setting up a movie production as a sting operation to bust a mob boss, with Matthew Broderick thinking that he was getting his big break, and Baldwin as the FBI agent leading him on. Really great work by Tony Shaloub and Toni Collette as well, very silly movie. Doesn't live up to the poster, but still, well worth a Netflix checkout.
