Damon makes time for another Walter Hill film. This one? Less good.

One of the most tragic aspects of Pryor's career was Hollywood's near complete inability to find a sufficient vehicle for his genius. I shudder to think that there may be people on this planet who only know him from Brewster's Millions, The Toy and Superman 3.

BREWSTER'S feels like a safe retreat after the comercial failure of STREETS, doesn't it? Pryor was a God to me as a kid,  and I remember (seeing it (sneaking in, dunno) with my gang of elementary school friends and loving it. It was formula, but perfectly suited for the pre-adolescent boy mindset. I revisted it about a year ago, like you did, on a Walter Hill kick, and found it for all its slightness still charming. If a step down from the early decade hilarity of STIR CRAZY, it was a big step up from embarrassing misfires like THE TOY, and it should be noted that thanks to its success, Pryor was able to follow it up with the most ambitious project of his career -- JO JO DANCER.
