The Late Thread with David Letterman

It's taken a couple of days to sink in, but this week with Stern Letterman called it - he's going to hang around for a couple more years.  And then I expect he'll be up on his ranch in Montana.

Letterman is in weird place right now, worshiped as a comic god by Kimmel, O'Brien, etc., pretty much everyone in comedy 40 and over - yet on television, caught between Leno and O'Brien's audiences.

Going to try to keep this thread going until he calls it quits.  Feel free to throw up your favourite Letterman bits, youtube clips, news, etc.

How many of us grew up with this now mind-blowing intro?

I'm not gonna believe he's leaving until his final show is over.

I was too young to appreciate the big shift that Letterman (and Stern) really affected, but I love watching him when I get the chance. His show will definitely be missed in my household.

I'm going to play the "I'm an old man" card and spout my theory that Dave was never as good on his CBS show as he was on "Late Night".  Those first five or six years on NBC were television gold and a huge part of my adolescence.

Don't think there has ever been anything as good as Letterman his first 7-8 years on NBC, yessir.  Still, we get flashes of the old Dave from time to time.

I'll be honest that my argument is kind of faulty as I can probably count on one hand the amount of times I've watched Letterman since The Colbert Report debuted.

Letterman was indeed brilliant on his old NBC show. He, like his idol Johnny Carson before him, paved the way for Conan, Fallon, Kimmel, et al. There hasn't been anything quite like old Dave, even new Dave isn't quite old Dave. Though this old bit from his Late Show comes pretty damm close:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVM2GTp2CN4

Can't blame you for choosing Colbert over Davehis show is consistently awesome.
