SUPER 8 IS PURE SPIELBERG, BUT ALL MYSTERY

Hug me, Kyle Chandler. Let's solve the small-town mystery together.

I just don't trust JJ Abrams. Great at concept, but poor at sticking the landing.

Kyle Chandler is the star of this?  Fantastic!  I'm there.

The sound mix for the TV spot was weird.  It just sounded like it played minimalist score while the actual movie was playing quietly on a TV on the other side of the room.  And it seems JJ won't even let simple white text on a black screen be seen with a dirty lens full of flare!  heheheh

Thought the exact same thing while watching this. They should have killed any of the background noise from the actual scenes and let the trailer play more like a mini silent film (except for the "Don't tell anyone" dialogue and the music). Other than that, it looks fantastic so far.

I'm split on this.  I love all of the retro/spielberg homage stuff, but then we have that fucking crash, complete with cg train cars defying all laws of physics spinning into the camera.  Just a huge red flag for me.  Bonus points for using the Cocoon score, though.

I thought this was the best movie ad tonight. Cap was pretty great too, but JJ is such a showman.

That really oozed Spielberg.  I can't wait to hear Giacchino's score for this, or any Giacchino score for that matter.

Wait, I thought this would be a found footage movie.  Guess not.

Anyway, I'm interested by this, and anything with Kyle Chandler gets a bump in my book.  And the quick shot of the kids hopping fences reminds me so much of ET.

Indeed.  The initial teaser  with just the train crash felt much more ominous, almost like a straight up monster movie.  Parts of the TV spot felt like a JJ Abrams re-imagining of ET.  If Super 8 lands somewhere in the middle, I'll be stoked.

That music from the teaser also had a John Williams vibe to it. Liked that. Looking forward to it even more now.

This looked Spielbergier than most of Spielberg's latest movies. And with Abraams surprising the fuck out of me with Star Trek, I'm feeling good about this.

This reminded me less of ET/The Goonies and more of Transformers meets Mac and Me.

I'll pass.

Okay JJ ya got me. You've got some epic shoes to fill here, but you made me feel like a kid again for a sec there. My tickets bought.

You nailed it.  It's like being back in the 80's during Amblin's heyday.

I was pretty underwhelmed by that spot; the teaser from last year did far more for me. If I hadn't seen the teaser, I would have written this off as a Spielberg ripoff, frankly.

If I had to sacrificially murder every movie to come out in 2011, the only ones I'd refuse to kill would be this and Battle: Los Angeles.

The first to go would be Big Momma's House 3, for obvious reasons.  I mean, when has a black guy dressing in a fat suit ever been funny (not including Honky Grandma Be Trippin', of course).

Yes, it's still way too early to tell. And Cap shows more actual dialogue that this does, but I love the look here. I'm not into the Amblin throwback just for nostalgia's sake. It's the focus on non-genre elements and telling an intimate story amidst all the sci-fi stuff swirling around them that is intriguing. Then again, I'm kind of an Abrams fanboy.

Am I the only one that finds it amusing that Spielberg is producing a film that's a tribute to Spielberg?

I mean, I agree the trailer oozes 80's Spielberg, and I think Abrams even referred to it as an "Homage to classic Spielberg," so I think it's pretty funny he's producing an homage to himself.

But maybe that's just me.

Add me to the "underwhelmed" camp. I thought it looked like a preview for a new tv series.

A 30 second TV spot before a full trailer felt like a mistake.

The more I read about it and see images, the more I'm believing this is a revamped version of Spielberg's aborted Night Skies project.
