I was very excited to see the American Reunion movie. I saw American Pie just after college and remembered it was quite funny. Jim, Michelle, Oz, Heather, Stifler reunite for their high school...

Nice write up on one of my favorite 70's films, Elisabeth. This special film has really grown on me. I think the first time I saw it, it was almost -especially the ending-emotionally too much. But now I appreciate it for the emotional rollercoaster that it is, and love it for the buddy relationship of the two leads. Both Hackman and Pacino give excellent performances--the chemistry between them and the friendship formed happen right before our eyes. It's my favorite Hackman performance. And like you said he's a little bit scary, a little bit sad, and when he lets his softer side show, totally endearing. A special mention needs to be made of Richard Lynch. He has one scene that is as frightning as he's ever been!

Thanks! I just saw this for the first time (list of shame!) and was really blown away, and surprised it isn't brought up more often in discussions of Pacino or Hackman. I neglected to mention their great chemistry -- but it's such a natural, casual film. I feel like current indie/mumblecore cinema could take a page from it.
Considering this was made the same year as Serpico, I think '73 might be my favorite vintage of Pacino. My God, the look in his eyes during the big moment of that phone call (not to spoil anything for anyone) is just heartbreaking. It says volumes about the character, his background, and his innocence. One hell of a tell....
Good film. I hope it has a bit of renaissance with the Internet crowd because it's well worth seeing.

And yes, Richard Lynch! Bad form of me to forget, but I think I was as scarred as Lionel by that scene. Goddamn.

This film was part of my Chud Holiday gift exchage package (thanks Whirlybird) it's a fantastic little movie full of great work by Hackman and Pachino. Loved the opening scene with the aforementiond match and really dug the chemsitry the two leads have.
I would recomend this to any chewer in a heartbeat.

MIA member Stew was a champion of this movie.
I described it in an old thread as a movie featuring both Hackman and Pacino at the height of their screen power, but lacking a "rock star" director to cement its reputation. An ending as bleak as Easy Rider. Great film.
