This looks shockingly great.  Fassbender and McAvoy look like they work well together.

If the ubiquitous MAD X-MEN joke hasn't been done yet, allow me to be the first.

I really dislike the look of Beast, but whatever...

McAvoy and Fassbender look good. I like the goofy, built-in-a-garage look of the original Cerebro, and I dig that the Blackbird looks like a 1960s Lockheed Blackbird.

Overall, I like the tone of the trailer. But I'm still weary of the final product.

I forgot the X-Men can look good in film form, it's been so long.  But nonetheless, this looks like it's going to be good, maybe even great.  After what I thought was a lackluster trailer for Thor, and lousy teaser for Captian America, it's nice to see a well made trailer.  I'm pumped.

Is it too much to ask, that if this is a hit, we can get Singer, or Vaughn to go back, and kind of pull a Superman Returns, and ignore X-Men: The Last Stand, and do a true sequel to X2?

Overall, I can't help but think that this'll be this summer's Robin Hood. If the heavy-handed Bryan Singer "Mutants are a metaphor for racism" theme is the crux of the story, this thing'll be living & breathing on Fassbender's charisma alone.

I hope to be surprised but I ain't holding my breath.

The trailer looked ok, but it left me unimpressed. I feel the trailer should have focused on their friendship. Instead, the first half was "hey, remember these characters from those X-Men movies?" followed by "this takes place in the 60s!". Then we get some quick shots of unrecognizable characters who might be mutants, some action beats, and then a bit about the Xavier/Magneto relationship.

Only if you get them to bring Powell back to score it (or just use his score again!)!

The trailer felt... off.  Everything looks cool and interesting, but it feels so weird to see a 'period' X-Men movie look and feel so much more contemporary than the previous X-Men movies.  So it's also weird that I love how bright and colorful it looks.  Also, I didn't dig the music in the trailer, but of course that has nothing to do with the final film itself.

Kick-Ass left me a bit cold.  I hope Vaughn brings it all together for this one.  It's looking promising.

Was this a trailer or a teaser?

I believe that the technical difference between a teaser and a trailer has to do with whether or not "full" credits are used. So I guess it's a teaser.

Between Fassbender, McAvoy, and Garfield, Marvel is obviously dead serious about hitting the sweet spot of the young-ish female demographic with their upcoming films.

Looks pretty and well-acted. And yet it's still a story I don't give a shit about that will likely recycle themes and ideas Singer's first two movies already properly dealt with. I'm pretty much at the point where the word "prequel" makes me want to run away from the theater screaming.

We're probably gonna see baby Nightcrawler at the end of this thing, huh?

My thoughts exactly.

Also, $20 says Wolvie cameos as a cab driver (or the mailman or whatever).

The Mutants as a metaphor for racism is not Bryan Singer's thing at all. It has been the corner stone of the X-Men since Stan Lee was still on the book. If Singer had any imput into that he made the Mutants a metaphor for homophobia in his films, which is a more modern concern that fits equally as well into the X-Mythos.

This film hopefully will touch on that, because that is a big part of what makes the X-Men work. If all you want to see is a team of super powered heroes fighting pure evil, then you have Avengers to look forward to. X-Men will (hopefully) be more weighty than that.

I'm guessing I'm the only person who thinks it's neat that they're hinting that the X-Men are going to avert the Cuban Missile Crisis...

My interest in X-related movies was at an all time low after WOLVERINE, but this looks like it could be pretty good.

And Fassbender looks like he'll be leaving McAvoy in the dust.

racism?  Hasn't it always been a metaphor for homosexuality?

As a longtime comic nerd, I'm well aware of this fact. My point was that, thematically, Singer & his screenwriters paint in very broad & obvious strokes compared with the more deft handling of Chris Claremont.

You're right. I was thinking of bigotry in general & "racism" is the word that popped into my head.

Remaining hopeful about this. My interest has been piqued since I heard Fassbender was Magneto, and he looks like he's going to own this film. But really this trailer makes me want to dig up my bootleg dvds of the old xmen cartoon series from the early 90s. Now that was the shit.

Looks like fun and I'm still loving that cast.

Just checking. But is this going to be a reboot or in continuity with the first 3 films we saw?

The trailer for...X-Men First Class, X-Cells, in showcasing the heroes of the film. Magneto Vs Sebastian Shaw, should be...Epic in scope.

Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique already promises to be hubba-hubba-worthy.

The whole time I was watching this, I had three thoughts running through my head. 1. This actually looks pretty good, so much so that I may actually see it.  2. Kevin Bacon!  3. I love you, Fassbender, and while you look great, please don't let this kind of shit tie up that talent.

Meh. Same old, but with a younger (and cheaper) cast. Not interested.

With two incredibly exciting young leads and the best director to have been attached to the series so far.

I'm sicker of the x-men than most as I was never that big a fan to begin with, but the talent involved alone has my ticket bought.

Digging the hell out of this trailer. How can you not be excited for this? Fox is actually letting out an innovative X-Men film.

My main complaint is prequel syndrome. I don't give a shit about Magneto and Xavier as friends. Their relationship is a lot more interesting as former friends, now enemies. The more the movie is about the breakup of that friendship, the less I have invested in it.

Otherwise, I think there's some promise here. Not much I haven't seen before, but stuff that looks like it will be handled well with a bit of style.

When I see Xavier and Magneto, all I can think of is Peter O'Toole and Richard Harris, especially considering the time period.  That's pretty awesome.

I'm finding it really easy to not get excited about it. Yes, the talent is good, and there's a lot more boring directions they could have gone, but I'm feeling no excitement from this trailer personally.

I like it. I like it alot.

Everything I've seen suggests Fox is acknowledging their bad decisions on Wolverine by allowing that to spiderweb into its own separate franchise. Which is to say that this will count as our first introduction to Emma Frost, telepath, and not Emma Frost, sister of Silver Fox.

Looks like they are reusing the same sets. And the Fox forest. Because if it's Fox, there's got to be large chunks of screentime devoted to main characters in some forest somewhere*.

*Someone else made this point before me, I do not know who.

Yeah, I guess I'll have to turn in my movie geek badge then because I have no clue why Fassbender and McAvoy are supposed to get me excited.

I guess so cause you obviously aint watching enough great new movies.

Try these:

The Last Station

Atonement

The Last King Of Scotland

The TV Mini-Series of State Of Play

and

Fish Tank

Centurion

Inglourious Basterds

Hunger

...and maybe you'll see what's worth getting excited about.

It certainly looks nicer than Last Stand, but prequels more often than not end up feeling extremely pointless. And I hate McAvoy, so that's not helping either.

I think after torpedoing their other superhero franchises (Daredevil/Elektra, FF4) and pissing of the fans with X3 and Wolverine, Fox knew that they were on shaky ground with their last big comic franchise.  That's why we've got a Bryan Singer-produced prequel directed by Matthew Vaughn and why we are getting an Aronofsky-directed Wolverine 2.  Both directors seem to have a whole lot more freedom than those on past projects.  It looks to have paid off in spades on X-Men: First Class and I suspect it will with The Wolverine as well.  Speaking of Wolverine, I've read in a few places that ol' Hugh supposedly threatened Rothman that if they fuck with Wolverine 2 like they did with the first then he will walk away from the character.  Probably complete bullshit, but then again Jackman is a producer and isn't contractually obligated to make it so who knows.  True story or not, Jackman has certainly made it known that he wasn't necessarily pleased with his last two outings and that he is even more disappointed by how much the fans disliked both films.  The fact that he pulled Chris McQuarrie in to pen the script and his buddy Darren on to direct is certainly telling.

Anyway, Tom Rothman (and Fox) seem to have gone out on a limb for the next two or three X-Men projects (assuming Deadpool gets made for a 2012 release).  They have hired better writers and given their directors a whole lot more freedom.  Barring them trashing both projects in the editing room and reshoots, there is only one thing that can fuck this franchise over again:  if the fans don't go see them.  If these films are good and make money, the trend will continue.  If they under-perform, you can say hello to countless more sequels/prequels/spin-offs helmed by the likes of Brett Ratner.

I think this looks great.  It's sharp, and it looks like a fully realized alternate reality.  World building can go a long way.  It doesn't show us much in the way of action, but this is clearly a teaser and we know Vaughn can direct action.

I'm curious, what's the deal with Emma Frost's transformation in the two snippets we see her?  Are they giving her Ice Man's powers instead of making her a telepath?

Her secondary mutation is to turn into diamonds.  It was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine too.

Do you mean "leary"? Or do you have a time machine? And I think Beast looks interesting. Much less blue-painty than X3.

The film looks well produced, but retelling the same Xavier/Magneto broken friendship concept leaves me feeling pretty cold from the get go.  We've already seen it played out over several films, flash backs, and constant allusions.  There's really nothing remotely mysterious or interesting left for them to show me regarding their friendship or the formation of the school.

Good cast and director. Cool period setting. Hot women. Big effects. I don't see any reason not to get excited about this.

And how is this film retelling the Xavier/Magneto fallout? None of the films so far have gone into it further than "We were once friends and partners, but our politics became radically different." There is a story to be told there.

But do you really need to go further into it than that they once were friends whose politics became radically different? The (albeit very sparse) information in the trailer didn't exactly seem to indicate that their conflict in the film would differ much from what they've alluded to in the previous films. And we still know what's going to happen to them, more or less, so it just seems more interesting to have them tackle something new.

Knowing how something ends doesn't invalidate seeing the process. Your argument can be used on any number of great films.

It's sad how the badly last 2 films dampened people's excitement for the franchise because this looks awesome! Vaughn's a fantastic director and I've got all the faith in the world that this is going to be a homerun.

Looks good IMO. With elements like Prof X, Magneto, Cuban Missile Crisis and the Emma Frost/Hellfire Club there's potential for a really interesting story.

They were bad movies but their reception by the geeks was very influenced by how amazingly promising the closing shot of X2 was. Seeing the shape of the phoenix under the water with the soundtrack blaring through the theater's speakers caused one of the biggest geek-outs of my life. As in "Holy shit! They're actually doing the Phoenix! OMGOMGOMG!" Complete with spazzing out and tugging on my buddies hand and forcing him to listen to me explain how awesome a film about the Phoenix storyline is going to be.

And then X3 happened.

PMR, Why do people get excited for, Michael Fassbender?  It is because he has such a...Magnetic personality!  With James McAvoy, the filmmakers...Wanted someone who could play the part of Professor X...X-Ceptionally!  Seriously, With the swinging 60's, the day glow costumes ripped from the original X-Men Comics, The Cuban Missile Crisis, EEEEEvil Sebastian Shaw, a...Kick-Ass Director in Matthew Vaughn, the alienation of Xavier and Magneto, plus the added attraction of Magneto to Mystique, this is the...X-Men X-Travaganza, most X-Men fans have been X-Pecting all along.
