McAvoy and Fassbender look good. I like the goofy, built-in-a-garage look of the original Cerebro, and I dig that the Blackbird looks like a 1960s Lockheed Blackbird.

Overall, I like the tone of the trailer. But I'm still weary of the final product.

Do you mean "leary"? Or do you have a time machine? And I think Beast looks interesting. Much less blue-painty than X3.

Actually, pretty sure he meant wary. Being "leary" would mean a whole lot of psychotropic medication, which he should be leery of.

Looks very cool - I love Fassbender's expression as he grips his hand doing whatever he's doing to that guard.

Four superhero movies this year - among many other genre films. Surely they won't all be hits. Which one will fare the worst? I would guess Thor, but at least it's out first all by itself.

Congratulations, you've just bought a ticket for The Phantom.

THE PHANTOM directed by hot property Simon Wincer and starring a cast of B-movie lifers? That PHANTOM?

Christ, you could at least have gone for IRON MAN 2 or something.

And the geek card crack would work a lot better if you weren't talking about someone as absurdly talented as Michael Fassbender. That really does just make you look ill-informed.

Seriously. I even attempted to educate rather than belittle. There's a reason people think so highly of Fassbender and McAvoy.

The (albeit very sparse) information in the trailer didn't exactly seem to indicate that their conflict in the film would differ much from what they've alluded to in the previous films. And we still know what's going to happen to them, more or less, so it just seems more interesting to have them tackle something new.

Knowing how something ends doesn't invalidate seeing the process. Your argument can be used on any number of great films.

I don't think it's knowing how it's going to end, so much as doubting that it's going to be much more than redundant. We've seen Magneto and Xavier interact and their politics across several films already. Done well by two pros. What are they going to bring new to the table for that relationship?

To me, that's the big challenge to the story, avoiding unnecessary redundancy. And finding something new to explore thematically. I'm sure it will look nice and have some rousing action, but a focus on Magneto and Prof. X strikes me as even more unnecessary than finding out how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. Because the implication is that the mutants didn't really change as much as their philosophies reached a breaking point.

I think to emphasise thematic freshness over every other factor is to ignore the pleasure to be had from seeing extremely talented individuals make an engrossing blockbuster. There's very little that's new to be found in the vast majority of summer cinema, but seeing two burgeoning greats like McAvoy and Fassbender tackle a rich, complex relationship like that between Xavier and Magneto is its own reward. Everyone knew how the STAR WARS prequels were going to go story-wise, but no-one can deny that they had the potential to be extremely entertaining and worthwhile.

Where we differ, is that I think there needs to be something fresh story-wise for a film to be engrossing. Changing the setting helps in that regard, but I'm looking for more than the first teaser shows, which puts a lot of emphasis on Magneto and Prof. X. And the Magneto and Prof. X story strikes me as at best filling in the blanks well and at worst redundant and unnecessary. Now, there's a much larger cast so I don't want to dismiss the whole movie out of hand, but that's an aspect that's been given central focus that I'm really not very excited about.

Good point but they are nowhere close to deal with this issue. The writers & helm are not that good. (I loved Kick-Ass yadda yadda)

I just hope the film tackles how much action Prof. X got before he was in that chair. Man got around!

And yes to Prof. X and Magneto sitting on a bed together watching insect lady strip show. At least I hope that's what it is.

"My dear... you don't have to do this for a living.  There's a better life for you out there!  But first... here's a twenty."

That room with the red curtains was a particularly striking shot.

I love the composition of some of the shots in this trailer. The insect lady stripshow, the Emma Frost Basic Instinct one, Magneto looking at room with weird walls...

Fassbender really classes up the joint.

Neither, actually, I made the comparison with The Phantom , not as a prediction of X-Men: FC's quality, but simply because your comment mirrored my own thoughts walking into a period superhero flick directed by a promising director (Lonesome Dove, Quigley Down Under) in 1996.

Settle down, fella, no need for that.

My point with The Phantom is that I think the Zane of 1996 has a bit in common with Fassbender today. Zane, in 1996, was an incredibly charismatic actor with massive potential & had appeared in highly regarded films like Dead Calm & Orlando. Sure, he dabbled in junk & 3rd string roles (Tales From The Darkside, Tombstone) but so has Fassbender (Jonah Hex, 300). Yes, Fassbender trumps Zane 1996 as a dramatic actor, but in popcorn fare like The Phantom where Zane is fantastic & exceptionally charismatic (seriously, watch his body language in costume, he's amazing), I think the two are similar. This was the crux of my comparison.

Also, B-movie lifers? Patrick McGoohan? Catherine Zeta-Jones? Treat Williams? Ok, I'll give you that last one.

The first glimpse of the cast in-costume really went a long way toward assuaging my dispassion toward this project, and any lingering doubts I had left were completely dissolved by that trailer. I'm 100% on board with this; if the entire film just becomes an excuse to showcase the talents of McAvoy and Fassbender and delve into the relationship their characters share, as captured in striking fashion by Matthew Vaughn's watchful and aesthetically-minded eyes, then count me in. Looks really, really exciting, or at least like it has huge potential to turn out that way.

Another thing to like about this movie: It ain't in 3D.

Damn that is a great trailer, looks like my faith was well founded.

Art Decade, you're just making me want to rewatch THE PHANTOM

No offense dudes but there's been a couple of big ticket movies McAvoy and Fassbender failed to make watchable. Not saying it'll go that way but their participation is a guarantee of exactly nothing.

You should be anyway.  As a lifelong Phantom fan, I stand by the fact that it's still one of the most accurate, true-to-it's-source-material comic book movies of all time.  It's a blast!

Fassbender is the only reason Jonah Hex even comes close to being watchable.  Besides the fact that its only like an hour long.

My favourite shot from the trailer is this one of Xavier and Magneto chilling out and watching some mutant stripper like they're in a Hip-Hop music video.

Fassbender does have the best line in 300:"Then we will fight in the shade."

I know I'm not the first to suggest this, but he should be Bond when Craig is done.

Looks like something out of a David Lynch joint.
