ONE, TWO, PEE-WEE’S COMING FOR YOU

I know I'm in the minority but I have to say I find his popularity among intelligent adults a little frightening. Big Adventure I can understand, but Pee-Wee's Playhouse? Is it all dirty material now, and it's just fun to watch a childhood icon make dick jokes?

But I've always found him incredibly grating and unfunny.

Pee-Wee was originally adults-only entertainment that eventually became toned down for children.

Like this? Horribly unfunny.

My first "exposure" to Paul Reubens was his bit parts in the Cheech and Chong films, so I always viewed him as a counter-culture figure. Now he's trying to go Mainstream. Hm

I grew up on the Playhouse and didn't get to see the original special until i got HBOC last year and it was being played.

I hear ya. I'm just a tad worried Reubens is getting a little long in the tooth to pull off "boyish". Even "man-childish".
 

He still does it just fine, trust me. Dude's almost 60, too!

Those of you who haven't seen the original HBO Special need to fix that pronto. Watch it for Phil Hartman if nothing else -- he was brilliant. The risque stuff Pee Wee did wasn't over the top or gratuitous. Really, his approach reminds me of some of the classic Mel Brooks films -- the joke is only halfway dirty, the audience has to do the rest of the work. 

I watched a bunch of clips on YouTube. I guess I'll just have to file this one under "Not For Me".
