THE BIGGEST WAVE OF SEQUELS EVER IS ABOUT TO BREAK

Box Office Mojo demonstrates just how franchise-obsessed a hungry Hollywood really is.

I'm just going to continue to cross my fingers that there will somehow be a backlash against it all and in 2020 we get New Hollywood Part 2. The dollars don't really support it, though.

'Johnny English reborn' ?!

You gotta be fucking kidding me.

If it happens, New Hollywood part 2 will be something VEEEERY different from part 1.  Something that will scare us and make us cower under our sheets...

What I love is  Twilight: Breaking Dawn (part 1). The first part, of the third sequel. Fucking hell. I'll bet green money they're going to try and do a spin off with the wolf kid.

(unless you actually think they’ll be complete shit, in which case: feel guilty for seeing them)

Thank you Renn. I get so fucking tired of people that piss and moan about how bad a film looks, or how bad the film before it in a series was, but still pony up their money like good little geek-bots to see the fucking thing anyway. When I don't want to see a film and think it'll be shit, I have this crazy compulsion to not actually go see it.

Alright, I will  be the first one to be fully honest......

Cars 2 - I'll rent it.  I like the first one the least of the Pixar flicks, but I enjoyed it enough to give the second one a rent.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2 - Haven't seen the first and won't see this one.

The Hangover 2 - Theatrical viewing for me.

Happy Feet 2 - Rental.

Hoodwinked Too! - Avoid.

Johnny English Reborn - I didn't care for Johnny English, but I loved the last Mr. Bean movie.  Reviews will determine whether or not I'll rent it.

Kung Fu Panda: The Ka-Boom of Doom - Theatrical.  I absolutely loved the first one.

Piranha 3DD - Theatrical on opening day!

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - Theatrical, but I really hope they change the title.

Alvin & The Chipmunks 3/Big Momma 3/Madea - Avoid the others and will avoid these.

Paranormal Activity 3 - I liked the second one enough to definitely give this one a shot in theaters.

Transformers 3 - I didn't like the second as much as the first, but I will probably see this in theaters.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol - The second film aside, I like this franchise and will definitely be seeing this one on the big screen.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Love the first on and like the other two.  Theatrical for me, even though it doesn't look like a return in quality to the first as I had hoped.

Scream 4 - I love the first, like the second, and hate the third.  Basically, reviews will determine whether or not I see this in theaters or rent it.

Spy Kids 4: All The Time In The World - Rental.  My wife loves these.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (Part One) - Same as above.

Fast Five - I've liked them all so far and this one looks like an absolute blast..............so theatrical.

Final Destination 5 - Rental.............but only if it gets decent reviews.

Puss In Boots - I like the first Shrek film and found the second one tolerable.  I haven't seen any of the others.  Normally I would completely ignore this, but with Guillermo Del Toro producing(!) I will probably give it a rental unless the reviews are awful.

X-Men: First Class - The Last Stand was bad and Wolverine was even worse.  That said, this one looks like a return to the quality of X-Men 2.  The director is great and the cast is excellent.  Count me in!

Winnie The Poo - Theatrical.

The Muppets - I am a sucker for The Muppets, so opening day for me.

Rise of the Apes - Burton's remake was awful, but I love the franchise too much to stay away.  Theatrical.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part Two) - Who the hell isn't going to see this in theaters, unless they absolutely hate Potter.

So out of the 27 sequels listed above, I will fully intend on watching at least 17 of them one way or another.  Take that how you will.  All of that aside, I am 100% gung-ho about going to see interesting looking original films and will take them over sequels any day.  The main problem that I have is that I live in West Virginia and we usually only get the indie releases that have already made a ton of money elsewhere in the country.   Unless it gets a full-on wide release, my ass is stuck either renting it or blind buying it when it hits home video.  I was lucky enough to be able to see the likes of Black Swan, The King's Speech, and 127 Hours over the past two months.  On the whole though, I usually only get to see about 10 releases like that a year in theaters unless I catch a showing while I am traveling.

I'll be the second to be completely honest, X-Men: First Class and Hangover 2 are strong possibilties, but wholly contingent on what I see and what I hear beforehand. Everything else on that list can fuck right off.

To slim mine down a bit, here are my definite must-sees:  Hangover 2, Piranha 3DD, Sherlock Holmes 2, Mission Impossible 4, Fast Five, The Muppets, Harry Potter, Pirates 4, X-Men: First Class, and Rise of the Apes.

Granted all are contingent on me actually making it out of the house on a semi-decent basis to go to the movie theater.  I have a newborn baby, so I'm not expecting to make it out as much as I am used to.  Not anywhere close to it actually.

I'm still shocked there were that many adults going up to the box office and saying, "One for Transformers." Honestly, how can a self-respecting adult go up to the ticket counter and say, "One for Transformers THREE, please"? I mean, isn't that in and of itself a soul-deadening experience?

That's why I like having a spare child handy for those cases. Adds a little to the ticket cost, but the shame reduction is worth it.

The only two I'm planning on seeing theatrically are HANGOVER and HARRY POTTER VII (and that's more because my daughters will want to see it a second time in the theater than for me - I'd be fine seeing it on DVD).

The rest will heavily depend on reactions from trusted sources. Critical mass here will be part of that, to some extent.

We should of course judge movies on their own merit and not by a single aspect. A movie being a sequel or part of a franchise doesn't automatically mean it's a creatively bankrupt endeavor approached in the same way as canned refried beans. But seeing them all in one place sure makes it feel so.

I grew up watching Transformers and have no shame whatsoever in buying a ticket for a live action version.  Same goes for GI Joe.  If I have any trepidation about buying a ticket for Transformers 3, it has far more to do with the second one not being very good and nothing to do with it being based on an old kids show.  Hell, I will have absolutely no problem buying a ticket for Kung Fu Panda 2 if I get a chance.
