Captain America by Jack Kirby Omnibus

A slick new hardcover came out this week that collects Kirby's 70s Captain America run.

If hadn't already bought this run in trade paperback form, I'd buy it. Insane 70s sci-fi Kirby is my favorite.

The comic is weird almost immediately. It opens with Captain America and Falcon arm wrestling, which leads to Cap and Falcon screaming at each other (Falcon calls Cap "Whitey") and fighting! They're under the influence of a MADBOMB, a weapon that drives people insane! Things only get weirder.

Another story involves THE NIGHT PEOPLE, a gang of Hobos who somehow travel to another dimension and kidnap/brainwash Falcon to protect them against space creatures. Cap teams up with a crazy Texas oil man named Texas Jack to save the Falcon.

Also, everyone's favorite "nazi with a tv screen face" Arnim Zola is introduced near the end of Kirby's run.

But the real gem of this collection is the epic 80 page "Bicentennial Battles" special. Cap is transported to different moments in American history by a little bald sorcerer named "Master Buda". Cap freaks out and screams his head off in just about every time period.

I've been meaning to pick this up since Amazon had it on the cheap. The multi-size Mad Bomb, the roller derby shit, Arnim Zola and the little mutant in the watch were all great Kirby memories.

I love Kirby in the 70s.

I love the look of horror on Cap's face when he's stuck in the middle of a hollywood musical.

All the years of fierce combat against forces of overwhelming power have done little to prepare Cap for the terrifying experience of being thrust into the glare of klieg lights amid an undulating sea of precision dancers!
