I WONDER WHO THIS ADRIANNE PALICKI WOMAN IS

Wonder Woman is cast.

As a long time fan of the character (excluding the Lynda Carter TV show, which I never cared for) the description of this new show makes me fucking cringe.

Adrianne Palicki , whoever the fuck she, is the right physical type for the role (she's 5'11), so that's fine, but it's a shame that DC and the WB have found it so fucking hopeless to get her up on the big screen (or make her work in the comics for that matter), that they default to yet another TV show, putting off a film version for at least a decade.

David, you really have to watch Friday Night Lights. It's incredible TV.

As for this news, pisses me off. She's a great actress and she's too good for this material, and if the leaked details of the script are accurate, it really is very very bad. Laughably so. I like the part where the episodes ends with her crying  herself to sleep over a man.

Cameron, I read your post first and then David's piece and went, "Wait, this is for a Wonder Woman show!?"  That just doesn't sound right.  And I barely know a thing about Wonder Woman!

Palicki is good.  She took a character I despised in the first season of FNL and made me come around.

Gotta love Hollywood.  The casting call notes actually asked for a "tall, muscular" type so . . . I guess "tall" means "tall" and "muscular" means "eats more than once a day . . . maybe".  She's thin, but she doesn't look fit.

Nothing like an informed opinion.

Well, there were scenes in FNL where I felt like she could snap Riggins in half, so it's great casting on that front. I think this is just about the only thing they've gotten right so far. Palicki's talented and has a lot of charisma. I hope this show doesn't take her down with it when it tanks.

Fucking what? Really? Seriously, you must be joking. Right?

Having never watched FNL, I have no idea who Riggins is.  But judging by the (multitude of) pictures linked to the article, she just looks plain skinny.  I recognise her from a few things, and agree she's talented (and ridiculously attractive), so no problems there at all.  I just figured they'd at least go for a more athletic, Christina Cox type physique.  Being Wonder Woman and all.  Bah, it's not like I'll be watching this anyway.  I guess I just woke up looking for a fight this morning.  :)

I like the bullet-deflecting bracelet joke, it's easy, but it works. The rest of it can fuck right off.

David E. Kelley really can't write women. The only one that ever seemed human were the women in the Practice(but not often) and Candace Bergen on Boston Public.

Also fun: Steve Trevor is a lawyer, but towards the end of the episode, Diana gives a fiery rant about a variety of topics close to his ultra liberal heart.

Another link listing the worst parts of the script:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2011-02-02/wonder-woman-a-sneak-peak-at-david-e-kelleys-script/

"Pages 26-28: One of the most gasp-inducing moments in the script is when Diana has a meeting about the “Asian Wonder Woman” doll that her company is about to go into production on. Yes, Wonder Woman admits to being uncomfortable with the doll’s ample anatomy, leading to a discussion of the size of her breasts and how people are let down when they see her in the flesh. But she seems to understand that the merchandise division helps pay for crime-fighting. “Big tits save lives!” she says, joking, I think. (Yes, read that bit again for good measure.) But the image-conscious Diana draws the line at a fat Wonder Woman. Har har. If you thought this laughable script was missing fat jokes, well, now you’ve got them."

Six

Pages 38-47: In the script’s most painful sequence, Diana is subpoenaed by the Senate Judiciary Committee and forced to give testimony about the events in Hollywood. She ends up filibustering about everything under the sun for several pages: the politics of the LAPD (name checking ex-police chiefs Daryl Gates and William Bratton), the economy, stimulus funds, pharmaceutical companies, Roger Clemens, the FDA and the FCC, and how networks will air commercials about erectile dysfunction but not for condoms. It’s clearly meant to be a showcase scene for the actress playing Diana, a calculated bid at awards and social relevance. Congratulations, David E. Kelley, the transformation of Wonder Woman from superhero to personal mouthpiece is now complete. Adding further insult to injury: real-life California Senator Dianne Feinstein is described as giving Diana a thumbs-up.

In all seriousness though: EVERYBODY, WATCH FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS.

It feels awfully similar to Jodi Picoult's run on WW. The use of Veronica Cale is particularly glaring.

Why would that monster do that to Wonder Woman? Seriously this goes beyond character assassination. I know WW didn't have the most high-minded of starts but this seems like a script written in the fifties. Eating ice-cream and squealing over Katy Perry videos? Having three identities one of which works for the other? What? Is he senile?

These glorified soap writers can't write big characters. At all.

Palicki is a great actress but goddamn is Kelley the wrong choice for this project. Worst part is, he writes or co-writes 99% of the episodes in his shows, so this is going to be his baby all the way.

If this is anything like Smallville, I'm out. Whedon should have been given his shot. No opinion on the actress.

What's her relationship to Jared Palicki? I assume they must have one, since she was on Supernatural a bunch of times.

Did you mean Jared PaDALECKI?  No relation, I think.

He did marry the chick who played Ruby 2.0, however.

I wasn't so hot on Whedon either, but this seems much, much worse.

I don't care for Whedon at all, but it would have been preferable to this nonsense. The unfortunate thing is that I can't even say that "well at least I still have the comics", because DC doesn't know what to do with her either. I can retreat to the wonderfully idiosyncratic Golden Age stuff, but it's weird to be a fan of a character based on the ideas that brought her into being and only nominally on existing work.

She will be playing 3 roles... It would be worst than Smallville.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. WW hopefully has an "All-Star" type storyline in her future that clarifies the fascinating potential of the character, but as of right now she's mostly about potential rather than having any really good storylines. Well, that I'm aware of.

It's particularly annoying that J. Michael Stracynsnkcynki and his ilk seem to want to reduce her to Buffy 2.0, when at least part of the appeal of the character is that she's mature, self-confident, and has a Superman-style sense of morality. But then, he pretty much took all that away from Superman, too, didn't he? (Ironically, I think Whedon's a savvy enough writer that he *wouldn't* have given us Buffy 2.0, but I guess we'll never know.)
