The Practical Application of Zombies

So, as many Horror fans (and many who aren't) can attest, zombies are everywhere. Zombie movies, zombie games, zombie books, zombie everything. Here's my question: Can  a straight zombie movie, such as the original Dawn of the Dead, succeed now? Are they just redundant at this point? It seems all the best Zombie films in the past few years have been parodies (Shaun of the Dead) or a different spin on the old yarn (28 Days Later).

Now, I love Shaun and 28 Days Later, but I'm curious as to whether Romero's zombies have been milked dry. What do you think? You guys are the most qualified people to ask!

Given the success of television's The Walking Dead, I suspect there's still room for good old fashioned Romero zombies on the silver screen.

Although I didn't like the rest of the season, the ending of the pilot set to "Space Junk" by Wang Chung was definitely a great zombie moment. I didn't even think of this show, I forced the memory of episode 2 out of my mind :(

It's all redundant bullshit now. Until further notice, Shaun of the Dead is the last gasp. If it has to keep going, the Romero model should be scrapped for something new, or for a second look at what zombies used to be, namely mindless, undead slaves. I'd like the return of voodoo zombie, or the utilitarian zombie, a creature with a purpose under the control of a party or parties with something to gain. That's why I like White Zombie (1932),  Creature with the Atom Brain (1955), Plague of the Zombies (1966) Astro-Zombies (1968), and Shock Waves (1977) so much, zombies with a purpose and without the munching.

Shit, if you just have to keep going with the Romero model, at least shake it up a bit. Dawn of the Mummy (1981) screws the pooch on the zombie mummy concept, and it never caught on, so maybe that's due for a revisit.

Voodoo is the wave of the zombie future. That shit needs pulling into the 21st century horror lexicon.
