UNKNOWN Post-Release Discussion

I dunno if I've seen too many movies or what, but this movie isn't even half as "crazy" as everyone keeps saying it is. I kept waiting for something really insane to happen, and... yeah, okay, there's a twist, but it's telegraphed from the halfway point and anyone competent can guess what it is probably even from just the trailers. I kept reading reviews everywhere saying the movie is "crazy"-this or "crazy"-that. Uhhh, no. Not really. It's pretty straightforward. The hype is not even close.

That being said, though, it's a worthy entre in Neeson's recent "kick ass, take names" resurgence. It takes A LOT from Hitchcock, a whooole lot, but it works. I'd rank it slightly under Taken, but only slightly.

Oh, and by the way, there's one thing the reviews got right: January Jones is AWFUL. I kept saying she's suffering from Lynn Collins Syndrome (i.e. standing around with a blank, emotionless expression on her face while stuff goes on around her). The "Sirens" in TRON: Legacy emoted more, and better. I honestly couldn't stand her anytime she was onscreen, yecch.

This movie is straight rancid ass.  Everything was too random for Liam Neeson like the taxi cab accident and the meeting w/ the ex-spy.  No thought into it.  Fucking Frank Langella died funny as hell.

This movie could've worked, the concept was there and I found it interesting - but the overall end product displeased me.

Are there any good fight scenes at least?

I had a fun time with it in a packed theater last night. It played well, and I didn't expect the twist at all. It's not a major crazy twist, but it was a good twist.

There's about 3 or 4 fight scenes that Neeson has, felix. The one big standout is a car chase that reminded me of the one in The Bourne Supremacy.

No.  There aren't any good fight scenes.  Don't listen to Rene.  Car chase was your below standard car chase.  Ain't nothing worth hollering about.

January Jones goes KA-BOOM!  It was funny.  *To me at least and I was the only LOL'ing.

Pre-twist, there's around 2 fight scenes, and since they're pre-twist, they're nothing memorable.

After the twist is revealed, there's one more fight between Neeson and Aidan Quinn, but it's short and not too memorable. Actually, there's a scuffle after the twist is revealed between Neeson and some random baddie in a parking lot, but it's throwaway.

Wait, it's Post-Release, right? Fuck it:

 (SPOILERS)

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Neeson is an assassin sent to take out some scientist, but he gets into an accident and gets amnesia. When he wakes up, he believes he's his cover identity, and that his assassin partner who was posing as his wife is his actual wife. The "new" husband is a replacement assassin who was sent to finish the mission when Neeson was in a coma for 4 days. So, any fight he's in before he remembers the truth is paltry, since he doesn't remember how to kick ass.

I argue that the movie is less about the action and more about the mystery and stolen memories trip. It was sold like a Taken sequel, and they tried to put some of that there, but that's really just the icing.

Lame, dopey movie.  Shamelessly rips off TOTAL RECALL by way of FRANTIC.  Wasted opportunity.  Too bad.

I thought that since shows like "Nowhere Man" (and that's going back quite a few years), when you have a movie with an advertised premise like this; at least the possibility that the person whose memory has been lost isn't quite who they think they are would have to seem likely.

January Jones is quite possibly the worst actress I've witnessed in a decade. I seriously got annoyed anytime she appeared on screen in all of her frozen faced glory.

Much as I love him, the most incredulous and unbelievable part of this movie was asking the audience to believe that Liam Neeson was born in 1964.

That said, I enjoyed it, didn't go in expecting a Bourne film or anything. I went for Liam, and stayed for Liam, and was hoping for something that was at least as entertaining as Taken, and it did not disappoint. I did figure out the twist about halfway through (and they took FOREVER to start dropping hints and clues to the "mystery"), but I doubted myself during the museum scene, after his wife told him that she was in too deep, and that she loved him. They faked me out good, I guess.

Reminded me of  The Long Kiss Goodnight. Except in this case, the amnesiac assassin didn't knock up his target.

I posted it as a spoiler in the B-Action Thread, but I was expecting Neeson to shoult "I AM DR. MARTIN HARRIS!" like Arnold yells "I AM QUAID!" in Total Recall.

I...enjoyed Unknown.  I also had no problem with January Jones.  She is a beautiful actress.  That is all she was required to do.

BTSMGL, I also would compare January Jones to Lynn Collins, as to me both are beautiful actresses, and could never be a...negative part of a film.

ForsakenNoMore, You know why January Jones had to...Explode, is that she is a...Bombshell, and that is one of the things they do.

God damn this movie. It sold itself on the shoulder of better movies, like Taken, Total Recall, Bourne, etc. I enjoyed the action scenes for what they were, mostly because I took a far too gleeful satisfaction in seeing the bad guys die.

I do want a gif of January Jones blowing up, though. Most unintentionally hilarious scene all year round.

Oh, it was completely intentional.

Saw this tonight and I really enjoyed it.

I admit, I walked in there with almost no knowledge of the premise and a vague recollection of what the trailer was about (the slow mo car scene was the only thing I remembered). I had a choice of 3 movies, this.. drive angry and I am number 4 and I am pleased with my decision.

I figured out they were spies when he leaned in to say he was presenting but I had no idea it was going to go down the way that it did. At one point I thought the title was about being stuck in Berlin without a passport. It was quite refreshing to be a little surprised by some of the twists and turns and the willingness to kill off anyone and everyone who was in the film. Loved Bruno Ganz's character and every scene with him in it. Sure there was a lot of predictability but it was well done and the pay offs were really great.

Throughout it all two things kept popping in my head..

January Jones or Diane Kruger?

also

Is every Taxi in Berlin a Mercedes Benz or was that product placement? and if it was.. why weren't they equipped with air bags!?

Diane Kruger for me. The fights aren't really shot very well. "POST ACTION" as Vern calls them.

But I did like the film as a whole. Especially the last 30mins during and after the Langella Carpark scene.

Yes pretty much. Like 80% of all Taxis in Germany are Mercedes Benz. It was almost 100% once.

More importantly: is every cabbie in Berlin as smoking hot as Diane Kruger? Cuz shit, over here in NYC, I don't think I've even seen a female cabbie.

haha, well we have I'd say 10% female cabbies. I was at a party in Frankfurt couple of months ago and the female driver was kind of hot in a Helen Mirren way, but I haven't seen Kruger material yet.

Liam Neeson can do no wrong in my eyes. I enjoyed Unknown for what it was. It was a nice little thrill ride.

January Jone's character has to be the dumbest person ever. If you were going to dismantle a bomb wouldn't you want a clear view of it? Why would you stick your hand through a hole in the wall and start fiddling around all willy nilly?

Just saw the movie and wow.   What a mixed bag this is.  It's not outright bad but it never rises above January Dumping Ground material either.   It's just sort of there.   I don't know at what point Liam Neeson gave up on trying to be a prestige actor but I for one am glad he did.   I much prefer the ass kicking, take no prisoners type casting for Neeson over the wise Father Figure type casting he was given in more "prestige" motion pictures.   There was talk years ago about Neeson possibly being James Bond.   In many ways, i see Taken and Unknown as his audition for the part (although he's too old for it now).

Can't really add much to what was said here but it entertained me enough and the very brief appearance by Frank Langella and Neeson's performance classed the joint up.   January Jones though?   What the hell?   Worst actress in film today.   By far.

Somehow, I kinda accidentally ended up having a Jaume Collet-Serra night.  First off, there was the news that he was attached to the live-action AKIRA movie, then I watched House of Wax and Unknown.

I LOVE Orphan.  But these two movies were much more forgettable with a few strong moments here and there.

Devin said it in his review earlier this year, and I completely agree with him.  I'd rather watch a movie about Bruno Ganz's character.  And more of Frank Langella.

Just saw this film. Fucking hell. The script is awful. I actually cannot imagine actors looking at this, saying those words aloud and then not walking off the project or punching someone close by.

Such a step down from Orphan. I really wanted to watch this, but, ow.
