Pictures At A Revolution

Anyone read this book? It concerns the production behind the five films nominated for Best Picture in 1968: Bonnie & Clyde, The Graduate, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, In the Heat of the Night, and Doctor Dolittle.

In a way it serves as a nice companion/introduction to Easy Riders, Raging Bulls. There is overlap, but you get a nice look at Old Hollywood and what was happening and how things were changing.

A lot of attention is paid to Poitier. I also didn't quite realize how big a deal Mike Nichols was.

A little funny when it gets to the in depth of the Academy Awards. More things change and all that.

Going straight into reading Easy Riders. Also planning on watching the doc based off that book as well as Decade Under the Influence.

I read this a few months ago and really liked it.  It made me want to see In The Heat of the Night, which I had previously had no interest in.

Biggest take-away from the book:  Rex Harrison was a giant asshole.

The Tracy-Hepburn stuff was interesting. And yeah Harrison, the Mel Gibson of his day I guess.

I found the studio stuff really interesting. And you can see them trying to get their heads around the new model for releases. I have gone right from that to re-reading Easy Riders, Raging Bulls.

Easy is pretty good, too, but a lot more gossipy than Pictures, almost to its detriment.  You learn about everyone's coke habits almost more than their work.

Yeah, I  have read Easy Riders before. Got the doc of the same name in today. Sort of feel like this is me taking a course in this era of film. Which is not a bad thing.

The Easy Riders doc makes me sad though cause I see the logo for Trio which was a great channel for awhile there.
