Time to lower those expectations.

For good or ill, Sam Mendes was the only semi-intriguing name ever attached to this adaptation. However, an adaptation of Preacher is never going to work, if for nothing more than the fact that no studio is going to fund the project without making certain that it's ideas are watered down to their least offensive form.

Agreed. Same problem HIS DARK MATERIALS had.

Is there really anything in Preacher that couldn't be in an R, or that we haven't seen something similar to, I mean it's 15 yrs since the series peaked...

Saying that, I have no hope Caruso can do the property much justice.

I'm not talking about content, I'm talking about ideas. Ennis uses violent slapstick because he enjoys it and it's a fun way for him to get his ideas across. However, the heart of Preacher is not violent slapstick, it's about taking religion to task, and doing it in the most uncompromising fashion possible.

We might get a film where Jesse acts like Jesse, Tulip acts like Tulip, Cassidy acts like Cassidy, and that might be all fine, but I bet you green money that what we're going to see is Watchmen. Looks very much like you want it to look, but with nary an inch of the mind or heart that made the source material special.

Another example might be Constantine. Compare it to "Dangerous Habits", the Hellblazer arc it was based on, and see how muddled the ideas became. With both this and Watchmen, you can see how the makers convinced themselves they were keeping the edgy aspects of the original even while they danced around them so much that the whole point was lost.

The other thing about Preacher is that some of its fiercest ideas have already been done in other movies and TV shows, like Dogma and Supernatural (both of which also did a fair amount of watering down of their own). About the only thing this movie could do to really stand out is to be as uncompromising as the comic, and that's never going to happen. It's not surprising to me that this hasn't been moving forward.

Preacher has a ton of fat, like the terrible Salvation arc and anything to do with Arse-Face. Plus, while it's a very funny series, there's a ton of homophobic stuff in it. Still, Hollywood will file off all the edginess. (You can forget seeing what Grail's plan with Jesus is and what resulted)

It'd be better on HBO, but I still doubt we'd see the really risky stuff about religion.

The gay jokes in Preacher aren't homophobic, they're politically incorrect. Ennis is definitely not a homophobe, he just doesn't hold much of anything sacred.

All the homosexuals in Preacher are perverts(One is a pedophile). There's not a single normal or sympathetic one in it. Ennis did this in other books besides Preacher.

The Grail was the weakest aspect of the series IMHO. Stick with Jesse' in-laws and The Saint as your enemies, and you'll be fine. I think the Catholic global conspiracy comes across as 6th form wankery.

Sex in Ennis' books is rather routinely presented for grotesque, comic effect; he likes easy, dumb jokes. His run on Hellblazer includes positive portrayals of gay characters, as does his run on The Punisher, and, drum roll, Midnighter.

The gay community is probably not going to go to Bruce LaBruce to represent them in the larger public because his often rather outrageous art doesn't present a "politically digestible" vision of gay sexuality, but that doesn't make his work anti-gay.

I just hope that while this project falls apart (and it will), Caruso drops out of making Dead Space as well.  Both project need to be saved from his hands.

No point in discussing any of the logistics, since watching a DJ Caruso is worst than getting kicked in the taint.

My Preacher fanwank thread:http://www.chud.com/community/forum/thread/120605/preacher-an-hbo-original-series

With that simply said, I'm more and more hoping that Preacher doesn't get adapted. It's just SOOOOO easy to mess up in the most atrocious way.

ETA: But if it does get made, a great step in the right direction is to get Joe R. Landsdale involved somehow. Kinda like how Richard Price use to write for The Wire.
