Nup I just don't see it. I know Leo's going to walk away with the statue because the academy are going to want to reward a hard working long time American actress over a foreign one and it has nothing to do with who actually gave the best performance and blah blah blah, but having watched both performances Weaver just completely wipes the floor with Leo. Leo's portrayal doesn't have an ounce of the depth and complexity of Weavers - maybe that's because Smurf is a better written character than Alice Ward, but Weaver really takes the part and runs with it all the way.

I tragically still haven't seen Animal Kingdom, but I'm trying to fix that. Out of the rest, all of whom I've seen, I have to go with Hailee. She walked circles around everyone else in True Grit, and when she's 14, in her first film role, and the talent opposite her is Jeff Goddamn Bridges and Matt Motherfuckin' Damon, that is a truly amazing task to perform.

All very true, she was utterly stunning - I'd rate her far above Leo as well. Frankly I don't really get why Leo is getting the praise for The Fighter that she is, I found her kinda one-note.

Leo did a really good job with her harpy of a character--every time she'd cut off Whalberg with her "What? What? What are you trying to say?" I wanted to belt her one. I do find the critical singling out of her feels kind of odd, especially since I felt Adams had the stronger character and brought a LOT more fire to her performance. In my head, without having seen Animal Kingdom, Adams would be the third part of a three-way race between herself, Steinfeld, and Carter.

Steinfeld was great, but this is Leo's to lose. Her performance was just a hair away from actually being posessed by her character's spirit. You're making a mistake overlooking her.

I've yet to get on Animal Kingdom, but seeing as how Steinfeld is only in this category for political reasons when she should really be categorized as a lead, I have to go with her despite not being in love with True Grit.  Leo's a chameleon, but I think the character's total effect is a bit nullified by the fact that The Fighter pushes her character to the side for the finale.

I guess I'm the ONLY one who really loved Animal Kingdom, but just didn't buy Weaver's transformation. I thought she was great in the first two acts, but her transformation in the third act felt like another, more obvious character. I'm dancing around spoilers here, but it was the most inorganic element of that film.

My vote would go to Steinfeld. I actually think it may be the best female performance of the year. But, Leo wins.

I'd vote for Hailee, and I'd love it if she won because her reaction would be priceless and adorable.  Don't think she'll win, unfortunately.
