RICKY GERVAIS WRITES THE OSCARS

After his “scandalous” performance hosting this year’s Golden Globes (ie, the only thing watchable about the damn slog), it is unlikely that Ricky Gervais will ever be asked to host the Oscars. But that hasn’t stopped the man from attempting to become the new Bruce Vilanch and writing an entire script for current hosts, James … Continue reading

Funny stuff.

Am I the only one that was massively disappointed in Ricky's Globes thing this year? He led with a Charlie Sheen joke, for chrissakes... thought I was watching Leno.

My God, is he self-obsessed.

That's what I found so ridiculous about the "scandal" of his performance. His jokes were for the most part very standard, just dipped in a bit more acid than normal.

Award shows are garbage, but here Gervais looks like Kevin Smith complaining about his airplane ticket.

Ugh. Seems like something David Brent would write. Go wipe your tears with some hundred dollar bills.

Yeah. So unlike James Franco.

Wow, I didn't find that funny at all.

+ 1. I was one of the seemingly few people who thought Gervais wasn't funny when he hosted the Golden Globes. And I usually like Ricky Gervais. But I find his "I'm not part of the establishment" bit to be annoying. When you're worth as much as he's worth, can you really see yourself as not being a part of that crowd? Reading his joke post, I sense some animosity coming from him.

I actually got a bit of a kick from his Golden Globes hosting.  As people have mentioned already, there was nothing special about the jokes.  It was in the Gervais' delivery and the reactions of the crowd.  This thing he wrote up doesn't have either of those things.  It was about as funny and clever as The Invention of Lying.

The globes were great. I thought the Oscar thing was fucking hilarious. The self-obsessed thing was obviously part of the gag.

And of course there's animosity. No matter how much money he makes, he's NEVER going to be part of that establishment.

In an E! News video interview, James Franco appears annoyed to learn that Ricky Gervais has penned a sample monologue for him and cohost Anne Hathaway to use on the 83rd Annual Academy Awards Sunday.

"He did his award show and he bombed. Why is he trying to get in on ours?" he tells reporter Jason Kennedy after Kennedy presents him with Gervais' jokes on camera.

"Horrible. His lines weren't good on the Golden Globes," Franco remarks as he reads some of Gervais' lines. "Why does he want to do our lines?"

Aw, he's just having fun. It'd be more fun if Invention Of Lying hadn't sucked walrus balls though.

I bet those dissing Gervais had a great time with the show this year.

He has talent but a lot of genuine insecurity and ego comes through his stuff, and not in the kind of knowing, self-aware way that might make it entertaining instead of making you suspect he really is a bit of a twat. There are some funny bits in this but the undercurrent of genuine butthurt doesn't reflect that well on him.

The self-obsessed thing isn't part of the gag. He really is that bad. "The English Kevin Smith" is a good way of describing Gervais' neuroses, although he's obviously leaps ahead of Smith in almost every other waay.

He's obviously pretty vain, but I'd always assumed that he was amplifying it as part of his persona.

Oh yeah dude, he's waay ahead of Smith in almost every other way. But one of the waays he's not is in making religious movies, because Dogma shits steaming piles all over Invention Of Lying.

Judging from pretty much every interview I've ever seen with the guy, nope. He plays it off as just larking around, but it seems similar to when Smith hides his pettiness and vanity behind self-deprecation. I've told the story on here before, but Gervais' tantrum about initially missing out on a BAFTA nomination for the Office specials really soured me on him.

Call him petty or vain if you must, but Ricky Gervais is the most honest and human person in all of Hollywood. Just watch his two big TV shows. He's one of the only bona-fide geniuses actually making stuff right now. He's the John Lennon to everyone else's Paul McCartney.

I'll take a vain, vindictive, immature and mean spirited but genuinely clever and funny guy over any well meaning, well mannered, well adjusted dullard, any day of the week.

I have to be honest and say i've never liked the guy but even with that in mind that script just isn't funny.

And I'd take Stephen Merchant, who is just as witty and clever and with a tenth of the ego. Looking at their work together and apart it seems pretty clear that Merchant is Gervais' rudder.

Oh lord, yes.  But I'll take them together.  I'm not sure if I've yet to see something ol' goggly-eyes has done solo.
