I like the Alien 3 memories that start the article. I feel like the only person in the world who dragged his friends to see Fight Club in theaters because he liked Alien 3 and wanted to see what else that David Fincher kid was capable of.

I think Alien 3 is actually really good in it's workprint version that has the oxen alien instead of the dog. I always like the idea that the alien took the form of whatever it gestated in. With Geiger at least consulting they should come up with some pretty amazing stuff. Can't wait.

Wasn't there earlier news that this film had moved on from being an Alien prequel? I guess not. Anyway, I've been thinking a lot about the original Alien and how the whole mystique of the creature (I don't call them xenomorphs, that's a name reserved for the aliens in It Came From Outer Space) has been blown over the years. It's kind of weird how it went from this sexually terrifying, physiologically bizarre thing, to basically a standard movie monster appreciated for its "toyetic" qualities. James Cameron, with his more rigid and "logical" approach, normalizing the sexual cycle of the creatures by introducing the Queen and whatnot, is perhaps largely responsible for that, but even then, they still had some bite. Not anymore.

I also think the workprint is a big improvement(although it can't "save" the film from being undercooked), but changing it from a dog to an ox was a poor choice. Surely if it took on the characteristics of the host it would be slow and large and lumbering, not zipping around like a greyhound.

I think Ridley & Co. were trying to distance themselves from franchise expectations (and recent disappointments) when they made those comments.  I think this has always been an Alien prequel and was always meant to be.  They just don't want fans going in expecting an action creature feature when we are going to be getting something far more cerebral.

As for whether or not the "xenomorphs" will appear?  Does anyone honestly think Fox would give Ridley this much money for a film at least vaguely (if not directly) tied to the Alien series and NOT make him at least have them appear somewhere in it?  I don't think so.  They just don't want us all to go in expecting the beasties to be on screen every five minutes.

One of the things I love about Alien is that it would be a great movie even if the Alien didn't show up. The vibe I'm getting from Prometheus is something simmilar, which fills me with confidence.

Whats the over/under on this film eventually having the "Alien" title put back on it?
