A vague Franco Nero quote leads to some QT speculations!

Story updated so quickly I didn't add *UPDATED*

This is perhaps a reason to thank the heavens for the financial success of True Grit if this turns out to be true. If this really happening, I am beyond excited right now. Keith Carradine!

Edit: Nevermind, apparently it is confirmed to be happening. Fuck yes.

I doubt this has anything to do with TRUE GRIT.

Yeah, I guess so. I guess it just made sense that perhaps its success helped this project off the ground at the Weinstein company. I should have rephrased it though.

I don't think Tarantino needs help getting projects off the ground financially.  And he's always been interested in Westerns. He just does his own thing.

The very idea of this maybe possibly happening at some time in the distant or not-too-distant future gives me the vapors.

If it's true it'll be like a hundred christmases.

Caps lock-AWESOME. A western by Tarantino? I'd buy the ticket today if it was possible. Been waiting for a resurrection of the genre - here's hoping such a thing will not lead to an ugly remake orgy but to some great new original films.

Lets just be happy we get Tarantino playing in that sandpit - it's not like Basterds inspired a slew of WW2 action films. After all - would you want to follow Quentin?

Dude better hire a truly gifted editor.  Sally Menke dying will leave a huge hole at the center of his films, I'm afraid.  Unless, of course, he picks a solid replacement.

As if I wasn't excited enough that Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair was finally being released (Not being on the west coast, I'm still waiting for an announcement it's coming to blu ray), this is awesome. A lot of Basterds felt like a spaghetti western so it should awesome to see what Tarantino when he working directly in the genre. I know he wanted Morricone to score Basterds (and ended up using a killer selection old cues, that one at the end that plays over the credits really gets me), wouldn't be great if got the maestro to produce a new spaghetti western score? I can't wait to hear more details.

Wait... what?!?!?!

I remember hearing about this waaay back in the day, how it would be less a "Western" and more a "Southern", so to speak, about slave revolts and whatnot. My friends and I had a lot of fun fan-casting that one! Josh Brolin as a nasty slave hunter was our favorite.

A Tarantino spaghetti western?  Starring Christophe Waltz, Treat Williams, Keith Carradine, and FRANCO FUCKING NERO?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?  Hell yes!

And now the fan casting really begins!  Who else would you like to see show up in this soon-to-be-masterpiece?  My first two votes:  Michael Fassbender and Tomas Milian!

Fassbender needs to be in it to right his western ledger after Jonah Hex.

Obviously not all of these names could be in the one film, but I think it's about time Quentin worked with the following people: Kate Winslet, Ed Norton, Bill Murray, Tony Leung, Julianne Moore, Hugo Weaving, Simon Pegg, Cate Blanchett, Ernest Borgnine, Terence Hill, John C Reilly, Luis Guzman, Alfred Molina and Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

...and anyone that doesn't want to see both Ricky Jay and Ian McShane return to the west under Tarantinos tutelage is no friend of mine.

Bill Murray in a Tarantino Western is something I really want to see now.

I'm just glad to be surrounded by people who think this is an awesome thing.  It appears that Tarantino-Hate is still in full swing on almost every other site on the web.

I didn't know there was a big anti-Tarantino thing going on. The closest people on here came to that was over Grindhouse/Death Proof.

I already feel like I've seen bits and pieces of a Tarantino western in Kill Bill Vol. 2 and Inglourious Basterds, and I liked what I saw. Bring it.

There's Tarantino haters? As in not just hating his acting work, but his straight up unimpeachably brilliant yet still full of nerd catnip films? Man, fuck the internet.

This is great news, and clearly exactly what he should be doing. What if he's on a serious creative roll after Bastards? That was the high point thus far, for me.

I was a Tarantino hater.

Then Inglourious Basterds happened.

The internet hates everything it seems. Best not to think about it.

These news, though? These deserve a lot of thinking about. With a bottle of lotion and a box of tissues nearby. A Tarantino helmed western? And I hope that if cast Franco Nero surprises everyone and plays a ninja.

OK I actually don't but it would be so weird. And you know Tarantino probably owns these movies.

Not sure how busy he is with his show, but I'd love to see Buscemi and Tarantino work together again. That, and I'd love to see him in a western.

Most of the QT hate I have been reading is directed at Grindhouse and particularly Basterds.  I guess fanboys are still pissed off that it didn't end up being a Dirty Dozen-style movie with Arnold, Sly, Willis, and co. in it like Tarantino had hinted at for years.  I admit I was disappointed when I first found out that it wouldn't be THAT movie, but I absolutely loved what we ended up getting even more.  Also, Sly made up for any tiny bit of disappointment over the original vision for Basterds last year when The Expendables hit theaters.  And, of course, other fanboys are bitching because Quentin is indulging his interests in genre cinema again by making a spaghetti western.  Have they not noticed that he has been doing that since day one?  Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction are just huge love letters to crime flicks................be they American, European, or Asian.  I think they are all just still pissed off that he is never going to make the Vega Bros. movie.  Anyway, enough of that shit.....

I would love to see QT work with Timothy Olyphant.  Given the fact that he is an Elmore Leonard fanatic, I can easily see him enjoying the shit out of Justified on a weekly basis.  I would also like to see Kevin Costner pop up in a Tarantino film, be it this one or another.  Quentin is a huge Costner fan, with Revenge being one of his favorite films.  Hell, Kevin was one of the original actors that Quentin had in mind to play Bill.  After he turned him down, QT eventually settled on using David Carradine.  While it wouldn't have been interesting to see how Costner played the role, I'm glad he chose to turn Quentin down so that he could make Open Range instead.

On a side note, I always laugh when Quentin pretends that some of the actors he gets for roles are the only ones he ever had in mind for the character.  He did that with Carradine for Bill.  It's like he doesn't factor in the notion that we know he asked at least two others (Costner and Warren Beatty) to play the role before going with David.  Just like Mickey Rourke and Sylvester Stallone almost ended up as Stuntman Mike.  Hell, there are a ton of different actors who were offered the roles of Vincent and Butch in Pulp Fiction.  Anyway, it's just something I find funny.

Costner and Tarantino could be a fucking phenomenal pairing.

I love that Mel Gibson suggestion.

Didn't mean a Tarantino hit would automatically bring more westerns, but my hope is that another (critically and financially) successful film will. It felt like the genre was pretty much dying until Jesse James and 3:10 to Yuma came rushing to give it some much needed CPR, which True Grit now has taken over. Who knows, maybe TG will be the one to revive it, but I certainly wouldn't mind another film coming to its aid... particularly one directed by Tarantino.

Oh well, even if the genre remains half-dead, I'll be happy just to get a Tarantino western. Unless it sucks of course.

Looks like they are claiming over on AICN that Tarantino is actually involved in TWO westerns.  The first is the one he is directing, which will have Christophe Waltz in it.  The second he is producing (and maybe acting in?) with Franco Nero, Keith Carradine, and Treat Williams.  I have to say, I still hope they turn out to be the same project.  The prospect of such a cast in a Tarantino western is beyond fantastic.  Still, it will be nice to see Nero in another western no matter who is directing.  Hell, maybe QT is producing a new Enzo Castellari western?

Anyway, one thing is 100% for certain and that is that Tarantino's next film will be a western and should be shooting later this year..................http://www.deadline.com/2011/02/oscar-party-roundup-after-kings-speech-weinstein-could-have-good-news-soon-on-quentin-tarantino-tom-hooper-projects/

I honestly don't understand someone not being insanely jazzed by this news being confirmed.

...but then I have a lifelong passions for Westerns AND Tarantino.

I meant to comment on this the other day, but I was having problems posting.  So since I am late to the party, I will just say this...HELL.  YES.

To be honest, I knew the Franco Nero thing was not the real story, but I wasn't in a place to break it.

Well, here's hoping Nero ends up in it anyway!

I've always felt that Tarantino should work with Johnny Depp. Not because I'm a big Depp fan (I tend to find his movie choices to be a bit boring) but just because I think it would be cool if Depp pulled a Henry Fonda in Once Upon A Time In The West and played a really nasty villain. He played a slimy character in Once Upon A Time In Mexico, but I think he could push the envelop even further. Depp is a handsome actor who never seems to age, and yet I think that's the sort of thing that would work to his benefit as a villain. Because his good looks would be a sharp contrast to how viscous his character could be. Plus, he has that Marlboro Man voice of his. And he's one of the most beloved actors of his time. Imagine the face of Edward Scissorhands and the Pirates movies shooting down a family or generally being a bastard.

So, in other words, you want the most predictable cast for a western ever.

Beyond excited!

I considered submitting this to the site, but since they have no documented source I didn't bother.  Consider this nothing more than rumor-worthy so far..........http://www.moviehole.net/201137602-possible-story-details-for-tarantinos-spaghetti-western

Back in early 2008 Quentin paid a visit to Dublin to promote Death Proof and I interviewed him for my radio show. We got talking after the interview about our love of Jack Cardiff films; I gave him a DVD of The Freakmaker, which lead to us chatting about some upcoming projects like how he was about to start work on his ode to Enzo Castellari with Inglorious Basterds. Anyway, I said to him with his great love for Italian cinema and how he’s nearly tackled every genre that it would be great to see him take on a western…
He told me he had a very rough idea in place. The story in question was about a black slave who escapes from his evil master and is taken in by these bounty hunters who train him to become one of them. The black slave has a great gift and ends up becoming the ultimate badass bounty hunter!!! He goes on to enact his revenge on his once master…
That was what was perculating back in 2008 – I’m sure it has changed big time since then, but that was what he said to me in Dublin…

While I am inclined to believe the story since QT loves to blab about potential films, the real question is whether or not that is actually the film he has written and how much has changed.  After all, Basterds initially started off as a simple men-on-a-mission tale.  What does ring true is having the lead be a black slave and it dealing with slavery in general.  Quentin's alternate idea for his half of Grindhouse was about about the murderous ghost of a slave killing bigots slasher/giallo-style on a plantation in the South.  He has also brought up the idea of doing a Basterds sequel set in the American south with Pitt & Co. slaughtering the KKK.  You also have his obsession with slave-freeing legend John Brown.  Beyond that, there is the fact that he has already spoken of doing a western set more in the deep south than the actual west.  I wouldn't be surprised if aspects of all of those ideas have been channeled into his western screenplay.

Whether the above synopsis is what we will end up seeing on screen next year, you can bet that it will probably involve a slave blasting away his oppressors.  QT seems hell bent on killing some racist bastards now that he has already done the same with the Nazis.

So, the only prerequisite to starring in a western is to have been repeatedly photographed while wearing a hat?

Well, allow me to suggest hunky NIP/TUCK star Julian McMahon!

No, I just thought it'd be amusing for the pictures to have a hat motif.

I wouldn't call Josh Holloway, Jennifer Lawrence or Danny McBride predictable casting choices and while you might associate my other picks with westerns, each of them only has a credit or two in the genre (memorable as they may be). I'd love to see Tarantino be the first to snatch Mel Gibson out of career purgatory and give him a role with some substance.

Before INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS who here would have brought up Christoph Waltz and Fassbender as people to work with QT? As fun as this blind fanwaknery is, I have no doubts that Tarantino will surprise us all wit his casting and blow any suggestions (be they hatted or not) out of the water.

Now replacing the irreplaceable Sally Menke? There's a challenge

I've seen a few people mention that he will probably try to snag Thelma Schoonmaker (or someone of equal talent).  I'd be up for that.  The question is, will he try and find a replacement...............................or will he do it himself and/or with buddy Robert Rodriguez?  Basically, will he branch out or leave one comfort zone for another?

As for casting, I fully trust him.  That said, it is fun to speculate..............especially when it comes to a Tarantino film.  I just hope he tries to pull in some of his favorite spaghetti western greats who are still alive and kicking.  I'll also be shocked if Michael Parks doesn't show up in it somewhere.

Michael Keaton for the villain.

Tomas Milian would be a nice addition.

This is beyond spectacular news. Here's hoping that Tarantino can finally get Ennio Morricone to do an actual film score. He came close with the Basterds, but the short filming to release schedule prevented that.

Everyone mentioned so far sounds like great possibilities. Count me in as another who would like to see Michael Keaton as the villain.

May I suggest Hollies drummer Bobby Elliott?

Saddle up, Bobby! Yeeeee-haw!

A senile '60s pop artist would improve any Western. He could play the town drunk, poorly imitating an American accent.
