Supernatural Horror Novels

Can anyone recommend me a supernatural horror novel that DOESN'T involve vampires? I'd like to check out some good horror stuff, but I really want to avoid the whole, urban fantasy horror thing. Is that possible? Help!

I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure every book has vampires. Sorry.

It certainly seems that way, doesn't it?

Off the top of my head,  "A Good and Happy Child" by Justin Evans is a good recent supernatural novel.

Here you go, champ.  There's some good ones in there.  In fact, here are a couple I recommended to Josh Miller in that thread:

"Heart-Shaped Box" by Joe Hill
"20th Century Ghosts" by Joe Hill
"The Rising" by Brian Keene
"World War Z" by Max Brookes
"Something Wicked This Way Comes" by Ray Bradbury
"John Dies at the End" by David Wong
"The Terror" by Dan Simmons
"Carrion Comfort" by Dan Simmons
"House of Leaves" by Mark Danielewski
"A Good and Happy Child" by Justin Evans
"The Graveyard Book" by Neil Gaiman

And, of course, you can't go wrong with King (okay, you can actually go really, really wrong with King).  Try "IT" (my personal fav), "The Shining", "Night Shift", "Pet Sematary", "Skeleton Crew", "Salem's Lot" (yep, vampires)...

Awesome!  I've checked out a few on your list, but I'll look at the other ones.  Thanks a lot!

Frostbite by David Wellington I've heard is good.  It's werewolves.  It's on my list, but I haven't read it yet.

If Lovecraftian horror is your bag, The Atrocity Archives and it's sequel The Jennifer Morgue may be your thing.  Be warned: they are very nerdy (like computer and math) and are more James Bond than horror.  It's about a section of British Intelligence called the Laundry that deals with intergallactic terrors using the powers of maths so crazy, they're essentially magic.

Through a Glass, Darkly by Bill Hussey is the book you are looking for.

Those Strass books are great, but not really all that scary. More Indiana Jones with monsters.
