Come Back, Nicky Katt

A man who had it all. For short, random periods of time. Other periods, not so much.  From kicking Adam Goldberg's ass to kicking Sam Rockwell's ass – fifteen years apart. In between, cameos in other Richard Linklater movies... to... cameos in Robert Rodriguez movies.(Can we call these cameos?)  And quite possibly the only man to ever be in both, separate Batman film franchises. In cameoextra form. And apparently that ended his career. Because he hasn't had a role since 2008.

The Katt made more(?) meaty(?) appearances in grand films such as The Way of the Gun and The Limey, and shitty films such as Boiler Room and Phucking Phantoms. I guess '99-'00 was a golden time to be in the Katt household.

But then what happened? Was it taking a job on the television series Boston Public? Do we blame Steven Soderbergh for apparently casting him as Hitler in a movie nobody saw Full Frontal – career-suicide(Although Bruno Ganz is still cool)? Or did Christopher Nolan put a book-ended curse on him, with Insomnia and ending with the most distracting part of The Dark Knight. Forever.

Who can be sure how it all ended? Nobody can even be sure about his middle name. IMDb says AGUSTIN, Wikipedia says LEA. COULD THERE BE ANY MORE DISTINCTIVE NAMES AS OPPOSITE AS THESE?

To my surprise, Nicky Katt has an 'official website'. http://www.nickykatt.com/nickykatt.html
Whose homepage showcases a random photo from one of his many extra roles, Sin City. And what looks to me like a random snapshot picture that you would find on a marketing website or something– but poorly, and oddly, photoshopped.

Digging deeper, into the depths of his message board finds us two posts. One – the most recent - containing Spanish text which expresses appreciation for Nicky's good looks. The second, from an old friend complimenting Nicky about his career in films.

YOU HAVE FANS NICKY. FIRE YOUR AGENT. GET BACK IN THE GAME. Hopefully it will be less than fifteen years until you beat up another fine actor in a motion picture.

Contender for most sporadic acting career of all time. Nicky Katt.

Isn't there some law that whenever one mentions Nicky Katt a Youtube link to his playground scene in the Limey has to be featured? And if nota video of that scene must be created?

Because that shit is gold on top of gold.

I saw him last night at the New Beverly. He nearly walked into me, and I'm all like "what, I know you were in THE BURBS, bitch." 2/3 of this statement is true.

Oh yeah, that's him in 'Burbs. I would also have accepted this good shit:

Mind blown.

I am a bit embarrassed to admit I know him best as one of the bullies from an early episode of Friends. I'll turn in my man card at the front counter.

Ushers are supposed to assist the guests such as you, not get in their way. Damn it, Nicky, you can't even do that right! WHAT HAPPENED

Oh, I LOVE him in The Way of the Gun. So many actors in that are doing some sort of genre piss-take, but his attitude is so detached and too-cool-for-school. I love how his character always seems smarter than he's letting on, even as everyone's plans start to unravel.

That's it, right there. Christopher McQuarrie needs to direct a no-budget film that features Nicky Katt as a chatty hitman. I would see that tomorrow.

If you keep up with this imdb message board, there are some who are keeping up with the latest Nicky Katt news. Recently, I nearly had a minor heart attack when he was listed as rumoured to appear in QT's Django Unchained. Then his name disappeared off the cast list. Yes, he is still alive and well and cruising around LA on his new Harley. He wears one of those WW2 German helmets. I've been the keeper of the Katt flame on www.myspace/violando , but haven't posted there for a while not because myspace is redundant but because I've nothing to report. My impression is that Nicky got tired of the rejections. He thought for sure he was going to get a reasonable part in Public Enemies but missed out. He would have made a superb young Hoover. The last thing he did was attend a retrospective on New Orleans films re his movie Mutiny a few months ago. And he recently appeared on T Sean Shannon's youtube vid Big Jim's Donuts. I have sources, and always on the alert if there is any activity re Nicky. One thing is, Nicky Katt is a free spirit, a hard person to pin down. PS Agustin is his real middle name. Mysterious I know but won't say why it's been recently acquired.

Huh.  Thanks, Nicky.

So the other day, a few fellow friends and I decided to go see a movie. Since I had only a short window of time to fit a movie in, it was narrowed down to two choices. One was THE GREY at an AMC cinema. The other, we would have to face the treacherous terrain of the local dollar-theater, with its flashing fluorescents in the hallway, mysteriously sticky floors, rock-hard seats with torn fabric, and always the threat of the print evaporating mid-film, while showcasing movies that had been released 4 months ago. THE SITTER was chosen. Many guffaws were had, despite how ridiculously incoherent the storyline became. But little did I know, I was in for a surprising treat half way through the event - a Nicky Agustin Katt appearance. WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN< NICKY, I says out loud to the screen and the uninterested audience.

It immediately made sense to me, as this is a David Gordon Green picture, the Katt was thrown a bone - or some nip, whatever - by his director from the under-appreciated and finely crafted SNOW ANGELS. He's only in one scene, that makes zero sense and was obviously only there for a dumb bit, but I guess Nicky can't complain, he's back on the horse. But what I can't understand is

What is with all the law enforcement roles, Nicky?!?! Your last four appearances, within the span of four years, have either been as a detective, SWAT member, or one of two police officers. Who would have ever thought a glorified extra could gain the status of being type-cast. Only the Katt. Nicky Agustin Katt.

Nicky still has the best delivered line of SIN CITY, if you ask me:

*arrows hits Katt in the chest*

"Heyyyyyyyy......"

Boiler Room isn't shit. I was a Katt fan in the early '00's (no homo). Used to watch Boston Public which also starred Tom Mcarthy and Chi Mcbride.

Boston Public rules!!

It was actually a pretty damn good show until they added the luscious Jerri Ryan and the not so luscious son from Meet The Parents. By that point it was running on fumes and nobody was watching.

I thought it took balls to shank Nicky Katt's idealistic teacher and send him bitterly into the night. Also, remember when Chi McBride went to jail for murder? And Anthony Heald was there! And Michael Rappaport also went to jail when he assaulted the guy banging his fiance. Man, I forgot how much I loved that show.

And the abusive mom locked in the basement.

God what a weird show.

It lasted four seasons.  Weird, I can't remember more than a season or so worth of material from it.

I remember Katt shooting off a gun in a classroom, and keeping his job!
