That was blatantly intentional. It was just out of place for how deadly serious the rest of the film is. But Zemeckis, for all intents and purposes, was nothing more than a hired gun who knew how to work the technology needed to tell what was, ostensibly, Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary's movie.
The mocap's tip of the iceberg, though. The last 11 years have been about Zemeckis almost feeling like he';s TRYING to sabotage the effectiveness of every film, even the ones that would work otherwise (Cast Away). I dont know what he needs, but less money and technology's a start.
