D.J. CARUSO’S DREAM CAST FOR PREACHER WILL MAKE YOUR HEART SINK

If you thought Garth Ennis was sacrilegious, wait until you hear what D.J. Caruso says.

I've already said all I wanted to about the "potential" this film has in the thread that announced Caruso's involvement, so I'll just say that in theory, I wouldn't have a problem with Pine as Custer because he's a good actor, but that's only in theory. It's all a fool's errand.

"Alex Pettyfer as the Saint of Killers."

Spectacularly-wrongheaded casting. Other Caruso-ified casting:

Miley Cyrus as Tulip

Taylor Lautner as Rev. Starr

Justin Bieber as Cassidy

I can't help but wonder if he mentioned Pettyfer solely to pimp I AM NUMBER FOUR and isn't actually serious.

Pettyfer WAS sitting right next to him when he said it.  It was a video interview. Definitely tactful.

Still, he could have at least said "Cassidy" instead of picking the most ridiculous answer. Cassidy, I could at least buy on some level.

I missed that. From what I've read he and Pettyfer didn't get along at all, so if that's true, yeah, it's definitely a bullshit plug. He clearly has no idea what the source material is about or how fans would take a pitch like that, otherwise he wouldn't have said shit.

I get that this probably won't be an angry, low-budget thing cobbled together by smart people, but wow. That reads like a rejected onion article.

"Allfather will be played by the internet girl from the Friday Friday Friday video, while the role of The Devil will be played by an iPad 2."

That was exactly why I had to share it.  We try to avoid the dream cast stories, but goddamn, someone using all those words and names together in inappropriate ways just deserved the spotlight.

Also, it's nerd rage day.

This is Alex Pettyfer

I don't think most of the juvenile humor in Preacher has aged well (Hitman was better), but this makes me cry.

Every day is nerd rage day.*

Good point, neo. Honestly, I feel the same way about Preacher as I do about Sandman. They'll lose more than they gain in any effort to adapt the material.

*I say this as a card-carrying nerd.

It's like he crafted the ragiest possible lineup he could think of. I honestly wonder if he's just goading the internet.

That's what I'm thinking.  The casting is so misguided and borderline-retarded that I'm nearly convinced it's a joke.

Besides, everyone knows that Nick Jonas is the only true choice for Jesse.

Marshall Bell was born for that roll (Kim Coates as alternate).

And since I'll never get Jason Patric for Bruce Wayne, a 1991 J Patric for Jess Custer please!

Hitman is much better...the arc "Who Dares Wins" would make a fantastic action movie

Love a good fanwank casting session! Care if I join?

Custer--Jeremy Sisto(I'm actually not really confident in that choice due to his vague Eric Bogosian's kid brother look, but Kidnapped showed he can scrap well enough)

Cassady: Sharlto Copley

sharlto-copley_example.jpgcassidy_example.jpg

My dream casting for the Saint would have been Angus Scrimm about thirty years ago. But oh well.

I think more than the cast I'm worried about the script. Pine, admittedly, ain't Custer, but I'd be much, much more concerned about the film actually retaining the kind of batshit craziness of the comics.

Ennis' own choice for Custer, in the past, has been Lucas Black.

Lucas Black is certainly Texan enough to play Custer. I'd feel he needs to age one or two more years for the character. Despite Friday Night Lights(Permian class of '02!), Jarhead, and Tokyo Drift, I still can't see him other than as the kid from Sling Blade and American Gothic.

Oh, and Michael Shannon as Jody. Too easy!

I had my way, Taylor Kitsch would be Jesse with Adrienne Palicki as Tulip.

Jesse and Tulip should work off of each each like Faye Dunaway and Beatty in Bonnie and Clyde with added supernatural stuff and a drunken irish vampire along for the ride. These two work really well together.

Both Cassidy and Jesse are fairly young, barely 30(And that's part of the tragedy of Cassidy, he was turned against his will as a dumb kid in his early 20's)

Jody should be Garret Dilahunt

Yeah, Kitsch and Palicki are a pair I suggested quite a few times in the past (which Rath gave me crap for at times), but in any case Kitsch is tied up with blockbusters for the immediate future.

I love that Clint Howard idea.

Dillahunt is awesome, and Jody having a voice that's not dress right dress with his physical demeanor would be unconventional. Dillahunt's voice is way too nasaly for what I imagine Jody possessing.

Michael Shannon's performances in Bug and Revolutionary Road still make me think he's the best choice, and by far the eeriest.

Nick threw out some great names on his Facebook for a Preacher movie with Maria Bello as Tulip being my favorite. So far, his suggestions are the only ones that scream BIG SCREEN while the rest of us are thinking that Mark Steven Johnson's HBO series is still on track(Well, I speak for myself anyway. I'm still in the mindset that Preacher should be TV.).

And regards to the characters ages: you're right, Cameron. It's just when I read the series, I imagined them being aged five years due to the heavy shit that Jesse and Tulip get handed.

Question: should Arseface be included?

I think he'd be fat in a movie, but in a TV series I think he would work in VERY small doses.

He stopped the book dead every time he showed up. He worked initially with his asshole (heh) dad and how that connected to Jesse, but got old very very fast.

What didn't Rath give people crap about? I wonder why though, his crush on Kitsch is huge.

Tulip was always older than Jesse, which was part of the point. She was a mature woman, and Jesse had a lot of growing up to do.

If this was 1967, Beatty and Dunaway would have been perfect. Somebody get me a time machine!

Shouldn't Cassidy be played by an Irishman?

michael-fassbender-as-cassidy-630-75.jpg

No Timothy Olyphant for Jesse? Because he's got the Southern ass-kicking thing down too. I probably would have taken Clive Owen, Hugh Jackman, or Gerard Butler ten years ago, because they all had the grit even if they weren't American.  Russell Crowe too, when he was even angrier!

Joe Mageniello (who nearly nabbed Superman out from Henry Cavill) might be a good possibility too.   True Blood hasn't given him much to do, but what little he's been on, he's had the right amount of badass and gruffness.  He's a little too ripped to be Jesse but I won't hold that against him.

joe-manganiello2.jpg

Elizabeth Banks or Kate Winslet would be my choices for Tulip.  I want to see Winslet just get really grungy in a role.

I love the idea of Sharltro Copley as Cassidy as much as I love Fassbender.

And I say cut Arseface.   I always thought he was the weakest damn part of the book.

Olyphant's 43.

Now someone like James Franco or even Emile Hirsch on the other hand...

Who's the guy on the left? He's got the look down pretty cold.

That said, I'm pretty open minded when it comes to conflicting nationality.* Hell, if he used his South Africian accent as an Irish Brogue I wouldn't even question. My ear is shitty when it comes to accents.

Reason why I picked Copley is because he's got the surface look, and his performance in District 9 is similar due to both characters always getting their asses kicked(and then kicking ass back).

*Example: Jonathan Pryce not even attempting to hide his British accent as the US President in  G.I. Joe.

Michael Fassbender.

Fassbender actually does great scruffy - and he'd be able to play Cassidy as Irish.

As physically right as Copely looks, I don't see him pulling off the accent.

Hirsch??? Can't see it. Maybe. Franco... probably.

Joseph G-L for sure. Or Casey Affleck.

Again, the accent wouldn't bother me as long as Copley nails the fly by seat nature of Cassidy; an element that I think Copley would be on point with.

But I'm not against Fassbender. The only thing that I could see fault with is that Fassbender's posture seems to be straight and upright. That kind of physicality isn't really something I associate with Cassidy, However, I'm sure Fassbender can easily adjust fire. I'm liking the idea more and more now that I think about it.

As someone who knows nothing about Preacher... why does this need to be a movie at all? It's not a brand name, and it doesn't seem like something that would put asses in seats. But if you bring a guy like DJ Caruso on the project, then I assume you're banking on a $20 million opening or something, right? This doesn't sound like something that would catch on, but is there something I'm missing here? Is the subject matter just that awesome?

LaBoeuf as Arseface is kind of amazing, actually. But holy Hell, Pettyfer as the Saint. WTF.

FRANCO?! Jesus, people. I love the guy too but... he AIN'T pulling off Texas. Can't. Can't do it. At all. Never nev.

Also as much as I love Fassbender and how the nationality is a cinch, I give the edge to Sharlto due to his physicality. Assuming he could pull off the accent.

And I agree: cut Arseface. Sort of funny in the book but would take up all kinds of valuable space in the film. I think including him in the film speaks to all kinds of wrong-headed decision making about what sensational aspects to focus on. That would be a move PURELY to get people to talk about a guy with an asshole for a face. That or totally rearranging his arc/place in the story which would be just as big a mistake, in my opinion.

While we're fanwanking... I always thought that if you HAD to make it into a film (and not an HBO series) the best arc for the first film would be to boil it down as close as you could to the introduction of Genesis, The Saint of Killers and the Grandma story/resolution.

Taylor Kitsch would actually be an amazing Custer. And going by Drive Angry, Amber Heard would make a decent Tulip.

The problem with Fassbender is he'd upstaged whoever was Jesse . Which is something you could never accuse the comic book Cassie of doing

I wouldn't mind seeing Eddie Redmayne get a crack at Cass. He's got that weird young/old vibe going for him, and I'm sure he could pull the character off.

Five or six years ago, this was pretty easy for me . . .

Jesse = Thomas Jane

Tulip = Katee Sackhoff

Cassidy = (a roughed up) Cillian Murphy

Saint Of Killers = Clint (and NOBODY ELSE!)

Nowadays, though . . . shit got harder.

Its been awile since I read the books so I might be a bit off base with this in terms of age BUT...

Josh Brolin as Jesse

Thoughts?

Am I a genius or just far too tired to think carefully?

Oh shit now I cant stop thinking about this, even though i believe this series is too fucked up to translate well to a film.

Sam Elliot for The Saint of All Killers

Sam Rockwell for Cassidy

Gary Cole for - actually i'm not sure, Jody maybe, the saint maybe? I just know he has to be in this

Brolin's too old. Jesse should be late 20s and you want an actor who can play younger for the flashbacks.

In the film Cassidey would be a showier role, it would be hard to translate Jesse's charisma and he'd likely come off more stoic and brooding for most of the runtime, apart from the more explosive moments.

I think Fassbender would be amazing. I like Kitsch a lot, but I haven't seen much to suggest he could play the angry Jesse, he works best with less material.

In five years, if he could do the accent, Aaron Johnson would be very good.
