Quote:

Asherah -- known across the ancient Near East by various other names, such as Astarte and Istar -- was "an important deity, one who was both mighty and nurturing," Wright continued.

"Many English translations prefer to translate 'Asherah' as 'Sacred Tree,'" Wright said. "This seems to be in part driven by a modern desire, clearly inspired by the Biblical narratives, to hide Asherah behind a veil once again."

"Mentions of the goddess Asherah in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) are rare and have been heavily edited by the ancient authors who gathered the texts together," Aaron Brody, director of the Bade Museum and an associate professor of Bible and archaeology at the Pacific School of Religion, said.

Asherah as a tree symbol was even said to have been "chopped down and burned outside the Temple in acts of certain rulers who were trying to 'purify' the cult, and focus on the worship of a single male god, Yahweh," he added.

Now this makes sense. I always thought the Christian creation story lacking a female element was a little odd considering women are the ones who ultimately give birth and all. Most other religions have male and female dieties, ignoring or villifying such a huge aspect of humanity always struck me as downright weird.

Nonsense. We can't be recongizing a female side to divinity. Female presense creates boners. We can't have god giving boners to people, that's preposterous.

Plus there's the cooties problem.

It's the damn liberal media trying to sexualize Christianity.

The fallacy of Christianity can not be made clearer. Religion evolved from the Greeks, etc. I love it. Religion is mostly as if people believed Santa was real their whole lives, so this is awesome. There may be a creator, but pretending we know his intentions is absurd. Morality isn't a construct if it's based on empathy.

The idea that a woman was involved in creation is silly.  They can't plan a wedding in under a year but creation took only 7 days?  Crazy talk!

Istar appears all the way back in Gilgamesh, the oldest of the old epics. I find this interesting.

Though I'm a Christan I don't follow the bible word for word as the book practically admits to being untrustworthy under it's own terms. It says God is the only perfect being, so anything created by humans would be imperfect which means the bible is imperfect. (That isn't the only reason I don't take the thing literally, I may be christian, but I do have some sense.)

I don't see why God couldn't have a wife, or be female himself/herself. If the holy trinity (God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit) can be different and yet the same being I don't have a problem with a holy umm... What comes after trinity numerically? Quadity?
