AT&T to buy T-Mobile US

Fuck fuck fuck.  I've been on T-mobile for as long as I've had a mobile phone, and frankly I wouldn't want to go to any other carrier, because T-mo's customer service is pretty awesome, and their voice and data plans are all pretty good (I've got a G2 with a grandfathered G1 unlimited data plan, 500 minutes + 400 texts, for around $70 a month).  Their network coverage isn't super fantastic, but it's fine for everywhere I go (and I never had a dropped call or unexpected dead zone when I visited New York a couple years ago).

I imagine everything I like about T-mobile is going to get eroded away (except their network, I guess), very much how Chase fucking ruined everything good about Washington Mutual.

I really really hope the FTC blocks this.

Guess those commercials with the cute girl are going to be ending very soon...

I mean both AT&T and T-Mobile are on the same networks, so if these means they're going to combine their towers or some shit to improve signal on both sides, this could be pretty good (especially since I'm an AT&T customer).

What are the odds that Congress blocks this merger based on a GSM monopoly?

My theory is that some AT&T exec had the hots for her, and bought T-Mobile in order to try and score a date.

That's my thought as well. I neverlose signal at all, but this will only boost it so in the dew places where I have one or two bars, I should have a full set or maybe one off of a full set. I still get great performance out of my iPhone even with one bar.

While they're both GSM, I don't think TMo and ATT share the same 3G bands, only 2G. Isn't that why only the first gen iPhone was able to be unlocked and taken to TMo, but subsequent versions were not?  Kind of like a Sprint/Verizon scenario.

Yup you're right. AT&T uses UMTS band 3G, while T-Mobile uses AWS band 3G

Besides with LTE, don't you need a sim card?

I for one welcome our new overloads. Add AT&T 3G signals on all towers and fade out T-Mobile 3G bands over time. LTE every one of those fuckers.

Oh and bring back the unlimited plan, you greedy bastards. I'm sure you'll bend me over when it's time for me to upgrade to iPhone 6(66). You know the one that has a little bit of Steve Jobs' ashes in every antenna.
