Argh no Gerard Butler for the love of God. Totally the wrong kind of ham for Zod.

Kneel before Jeffrey Dean Morgan!

Well Hardy and Fassbender are caught up in existing superhero properties otherwise they'd be first on my list. Maybe a young Kal-El needs a younger(ish) Zod? No matter what, what you need is really a very very good actor...

Some (albeit unorthodox) suggestions from across the age spectrum...

Please explain to me why people like Gerard Butler.

EDIT: Rain Dog, I like your suggestions apart from Norton. Can you imagine his voice as the voice of Zod?

Good point.

Another idea I had was Snyder could say 'fuck it' and just go a full on Tudors reunion...

Because Butler was a good, charismatic actor before he was caught up in his own celebrity and manwhoring.  Rent The Jury, Dear Frankie (sappy but bearably so), Beowulf and Grendel (the film has its problems, but Butler isn't one of them) or the short films "Please!" and "Jewel of the Sahara" if you can track them down.  (They used to stream online.)  He was once incredibly commanding and promising.

Personally I thought he kicked ass in 300, it's like his last great moment. If he could tap into that again, I think he'd be a very good Zod.  But he may be too busy making stupid rom-coms.

I like Kevin McKidd for this, though.  Very good pick. That guy needs an awesome, awesome role in a geek movie. Ray Stevenson's had a bunch, why not McKidd?

Exactly - and since he was robbed of Thor, the guys well overdue. He deserves a much better career than the one he's slumming with currently.

Ha! The voice and the craziest fucking eyes.  That would work insanely well, unless he goes on some coke and booze bender and drops out at the 11th hour!

That was actually the best part of The Tudors once they beheaded poor Anne - Rhys Meyers going bonkers, and Henry Cavill just looking oh-so-patient and weary as he put more ladies in his path. A rather Supes/Zod dynamic, really, except Superman doesn't kowtow to Zod, and supply him with whores to try and keep him from destroying Earth.

Maybe he should though.

I love that Stevenson got into the Warrior's Three, but I wish McKidd was seen as dashing enough to have been Fandral, just so I could have had a Rome reunion in my heart.

But if he can't have a Marvel contract, then he needs to go DC.

Ian McShane. Playing it EXACTLY like Al Swearengen.

To be fair to Butler, I think some of his better recent performances have gotten overlooked because they came in movies that either got mixed reviews or were outright panned. I loved him in RocknRolla (the train track chase was a thing of beauty), and he turned in a solid villain performance in the incredibly stupid Law Abiding Citizen. Throw Dragon into the mix, and I'd say his performances over the past few years have been generally solid (with obvious exceptions) even if his choice of roles has been questionable.

Oh, I'd agree, I just didn't want to sound too fangirlish.  I liked him in RocknRolla as well (And if we're going to hold the entire cast to the fire, then bye bye Idris Elba and Tom Hardy too. Hardy has done some questionable things for food too, guys!).

I can't remember much of Law Abiding Citizen, but at the time I thought he had some properly chilling moments.  He's usually the high point of a lousy script, it's just that he can't pick them to save his life. But unlike, say, Hugh Jackman or Daniel Craig, his public persona has really outstripped his work, which is I think why people (and I'm guilty of it) hold him in disregard.

A lot of people, at least on Twitter, were championing Butler as Zod but it seems to have died off a bit. I *was* going with the old consensus, not my fangirl whims! ;)

The more I'm thinking about it the more I'm liking the idea of McKidd. The guy can be intense as fuck and deserves the break a role like that could give him. Anyone who hasn't seen how good he can be, watch ROME or even North Square (if you can track it down) to see what I'm on about.

That said, its about time Paul Bettany was in a good profitable film again.

The Jeffery Dean  Morgan suggestion is a great one.  But i'd love to see The Rock do it just for laughs.

Do we know the age of Zod in the script? I have a feeling they'll go young with someone like Alexander Skarsgård...

I could see Gerard Butler pulling off a nice performance as Zod, but his schedule is too full.  Others who have full plates and likely couldn't do this?  Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Tom Hardy, Liam Neeson, Michael Fassbender, and previous fan-favorite Jude Law.  Jon Hamm would be an awesome choice (as long as Mad Men isn't a conflict) and I liked the Jonathan Rhys Meyers suggestion as well.  Daniel Day-Lewis is a longshot that has been rumored.  Before Nine, I would have said there was no chance..............but you never know  Whoever they snag, you can bet they will at least initially try to get an actor who is fairly recognizable.

Casting Butler would be a horrible decision. But if we're pulling from DEADWOOD  -- and, really, why wouldn't we be? -- then I'm going with ...

Daniel Day-Lewis? That could make for the greatest behind the scenes footage of all time.

I initially thought, "yeah I love Dillahunt but I don't know about a Southern sounding Zod, unfortunately." But it'd be awesome if he pulled off one or two scenes in a non-natural voice and then, in a vague nod to Superman II, we see him arrive on Earth and annihilate some hillbillies. And in the course of his taunting/destruction, he finds the hick-speak utterly hilarious and decides to adopt it for the duration.

Day-Lewis was the rumor running before Viggo's name came into the mix.  At the time everyone figured it was for the role of Jor-El, but that was before we knew about the supposed inclusion of Zod & Ursa.  Who knows if he has even been considered or offered anything................................but it's certainly fun to think about!

Gah, whatever happened to that Captain Marvel movie with The Rock?? That would have been great. I see DC is championing Supes and Green Lantern, with some heat behind The Flash, but Peter Segal was developing a Captain Marvel movie with the Rock, right? And I had heard they were debating having the Rock as Cap, or Black Adam, or BOTH. I'd rather see that than a Zack Snyder Superman, even if Peter Segal isn't much of a director.

As for Zod, I'm thinking they'll desperately overpay to get a serious name for the role. I don't think DDL even took phone calls for this. From what I hear, Nine make him pine for his days as a shoemaker in Italy, or wherever he goes in his off-time.

One thing that excites me about the possibility of the Kryptonian supervillains being reused is the fact that we can see them wreck havoc on an epic scale this time.  I love Superman II to death, but even I have to admit that Zod & Co. first Earthbound destructive setpiece is lame.  They land on our planet rarin' to cause trouble............................and only mildly bust up some hick town?  The sequence really only works because of Stamp & Douglas.  What do I want out of the return of Zod (if he is actually returning)?  Epic destruction.  Show the world what it would be like if Superman didn't care by having a similarly powered villain(s) devastate and conquer.  Give me a Superman II without the cheesiness!  If they are going to reuse Zod, that is what I want.  If I can have a villain they haven't used before, then at least give me that.

I'm pretty sure that Johnson settled on playing Black Adam after putting the question to the fans and the overwhelming response was wanting to see him as the villain.  I remember him being really psyched about the project in the interviews he did at the time.  It's a shame it fell apart.  As for overpaying a celeb for Zod?  I think you are right.  I just hope that whoever they get doesn't decide to sleepwalk through the role.

Always saw Eric Bana as Zod (back during those rumors he'd show up in the unmade Superman Returns sequel). But I think he's already fished in that lake with Star Trek.

Don Cheadle.

Some of Snyder's comments about the direction in which he wants to take this film read exactly like he's (or someone close to the production) looking over message board talk, which I'm sure is true to a certain extent, but really transparent in this case. Since Nolan's name is attached to this thing, he's talking up the "realism" he wants to achieve with this new Superman film, and going on about it being a stylistic departure for him, etc.

I'm not going to rag on the guy anymore b/c I've said all I need to say, but I'd wager that at this point, this is a film that he almost has to do rather than wants to do.

Is anyone else vaguely amused by the fact that if you scroll down this thread it just looks like we're posting pictures from one really bizarre family. I can't believe how many actors look kind of oddly similar nowadays.

Mortensen would have been great, but I think 75% of the fancasting in this thread would work.

That said, I'm pretty ambivalent about what the fuck happens with this picture overall.

I'll mancrush for JD Morgan and Viggo as much as the next Chewer, but Stamp's empty boots demand a genuine UK accent for Zod. Or not, if they don't take that route.

I think it is Snyder reading. I've caught him echoing and paraphrasing stuff I've seen fans writing on comments, message boards from as far back as 300 and Watchmen.   It happens too often to be coincidence. That whole "I'm not copying Donner" spiel screamed "I was reading the Internet again."

He seems to be such an active guy, I'm not sure where he finds the time. Maybe he sleeps with his eyes open, scanning his RSS feeds.

Heck yeah. Elba can play anyone!  And then we'd get to see the racist fanboys freak out again, and I never get sick of that. Really, I don't.

I'd expect the overly PC crowd more than the racists. "Oh, you want a black guy to play an escaped convict murderer to go up against Earth's white savior?"

I was going to say that, but I thought it sounded racist to imply a black guy COULDN'T play an escaped convict murderer...!

But really, all I saw was "ZOD WASN'T BLACK!! THEY ARE WHITE ON KRYPTON!!!"

Isn't Superman supposed to be influenced or a metaphor for some sort of Jewish experience?  Shouldn't Zod be Jewish?

Is the New Earth Zod the current backstory?  It seems like they made Zod less of a convicted murderer and gave some depth to the villain.
