Favorite movie from the year you were born

Thread Starter

I'm ripping off Ripoll's idea from the music forum. Title says it all.

1987

Naturally...

1981 was a great year, but honestly, kind of a no-brainer...

Wow - great thread. I honestly flipped a coin on this one - I was born in 1978. Awesome year.

Gotta go with Halloween.

Day of the Dead, 1985. This is probably my favorite movie of the Dead series too.

1974's Young Frankenstein.

You damn kids, get off my lawn!

It was a hard decision.  TORA, TORA, TORA  and AIRPORT gave some stiff competition.

1976 has a fair few great movies but i'm goign to have to go with Rocky.  This might change however as I have  borrowed All the Presidents' Men to watch (as I have never seen it).

Of course a case could be made for Big Bus as well :)

Couldn't pick - 1976 was just too good a year. Go on then - YOU pick one from these...

Taxi Driver

Network

The Outlaw Josey Wales

The Omen

All The Presidents Men

Hmm, 1986 wasn't exactly a great year for movies. I'll have to say either Blue Velvet or Three Amigos. I love both very much but for different reasons of course.

1976 looks like a very tough year to pick just one.

YOU FUCKING THIEF.

1987 had:

Lethal Weapon

Broadcast News

Eddie Murphy's Raw

Evil Dead II

Full Metal Jacket

Hellraiser

Near Dark

The Princess Bride

Radio Days

Raising Arizona

Robocop

Street Trash

Withnail and I

But I'm gonna have to go with Nightmare on Elm Street Part 3: The Dream Warriors. It's pretty much a perfect balance of everything I love about 80's horror: great effects, inventive kills, funny but not silly, cheesy acting. Absolutely adore it.

'81.  Raiders.  No brainer.

"Alien" (1979).

I really love Scarface, but it has to be

I'm a horror geek born in 1968.  How can I choose anything other than Night of the Living Dead?

and an Honorable Mention for Midnight Cowboy.

Lotta youngsters here.

1973 had some good ones, but for a favorite I need to go with:

With an honorable mention to:

1985.  Gotta go with the obvious choice:  Back to the Future.

The greatest year in movie history, imo... 1974. Still, I do have one that stands slightly above the rest- The Conversation

1986 - Aliens all the way.

'84 is a tough year (Gremlins, Romancing the Stone, Temple of Doom), but I'll have to go with The Terminator.

1975 Jaws

1980 - As much as I love Raging Bull, Airplane! and The Shining, it's gotta be Empire.

carriefisher_esb.jpg

Jacob Singer's gonna pick Steamboat Bill, Jr., right?

1986 - Big Trouble in Little China

1991 - The Double Life of Veronique

Inchon!!!

Kidding.

E.T.  Not a particularly original choice, but there it is.

Bunch o' whippersnappers.

Not even a contest for me, though DESTROY ALL MONSTERS did give me pause. No, it's easily this:

Yay!  I'm not the only 42 year-old here!

1978. For me it's a tie between these three.

Wow - we really are a pretty even split between Gens X & Y around here aren't we?

Oh and I just realised a film from my year that while not objectively the best, is certainly a big sentimental favorite of mine. The first time Gene teamed up with Richard...

1983 - MONTY PYTHON'S The Meaning of Life

So many to choose from 1982. But I'll go with Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Kahn.

Rocky 3 would be my runner up.

1969. If I'm gonna be honest with myself? Take the Money and Run. It may have been the first Woody Allen film I saw, too.

For me, 1975's a three-way deathmatch between Dog Day Afternoon, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Jaws, but the one I revisit the most is easily Jaws.

1984:

 C.H.U.D

DUNE!

Ghostbusters_cover.png

1984 was a kickass year for movies it seems. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Terminator, Muppets Take Manhattan, Neverending Story, Nightmare on Elm Street, Once Upon a Time In America, Red Dawn, Sixteen Candles, This is Spinal Tap

75 also had Deep Red, Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Man Who Would Be King, The Yakuza, and MF'n Hard Times... If Jaws hadn't come out, then picking a fave would have been difficult. But yeah: Jaws.

Three way tie for me. 1987 ruled.

Let's see... I'm an '83 guy, and since Cronenberg is one of my hands down favorite directors of all time (and just possibly my singular favorite period), then this one's a no-brainer of a toss up:

The_Dead_Zone.jpgVideodromeposter.jpg

Goddamn, '83 was a motherfucker of a year for the guy.

Honorable mentions go to Scorsese's The King of Comedy, Jackie Chan's Project A, and the fantastic Hiroshima-centered anime feature film Barefoot Gen.

EDIT: Oh yeah can't believe I almost forgot: sorry to flog out another anime title, but '83 also gave us the Golgo 13 film (anime film, not the Sonny Chiba one from the 70's obviously). Any self-respecting frequenter of the B Action thread absolutely owes it to themselves to see that movie if they haven't already, as it's pretty much one of the most perfect representations of those kinds of pulpy, over the top, hard-edged 80's action movies in the form of an animated film that I've ever come across. Ranks as one of my single most rewatched animated films ever and is definitely worth at least an honorable mention here.

Know what fuck it, I'll give Trading Places and even Psycho II a nod, questionable as that last one may be for some.

'82, motherfuckers.

Oh, let me see. I know! It's Young Frankenstein! Wait. No, it's Blazing Saddles. Or is it Chinatown? I cannot decide!

No I actually can.

It's the goddamn Godfather fucking Part 2.

1974 laughs at your puny years. And I didn't even have to mention The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Or Emmanuelle and Zardoz.

The most interesting thing about '74 was that it had so many directors who released two good to all-time great films.  Coppola, Brooks, Altman, Scorsese (if you count Italianamerican, which is awesome), and Fassbender, at least.

I've been sitting on my Netflix copy of Picnic at Hanging Rock for two weeks now, waiting for the right moment. I'll check out those other ones too, thanks.

Return of the Jedi about the only big movie of 83 Ive seen

Just turned 36 two days ago.  I was going to pick Jaws, as it's the obvious choice.  But, since it has already been selected, I'll go with this classic:

83's a weak-ass year, yeah, but, not even Christmas Story??

1985

ran_01.jpg

The great work of my favourite masters later period. 1985 is kind of a shitty year, with a few sprinklings of greatness (Brazil and Mishima), but Ran is a genuinely amazing piece of cinema and a personal favourite of mine.
