Green Lantern Pre-Release

Thread Starter

Only months away and no pre-release thread? A harbinger? I think so. Thread was inspired by an article I read spotlighting the $200 million budget and marketing delay because of "FX work".

My feeling on this picture at the moment? Close your eyes, Mr. Reynolds, this might hurt a little.

I imagine the Green Lantern PR department has been closely watching for the start of this thread, and just popped champagne and shit themselves with relief.

America:  "Green Lantern?  Didn't I just see that movie with that stoner guy and the little Chinese dude?"

There's a reason Marvel properties are converging to Avengers and not in reverse from JLA to standalone big budget turds.

What did I tell you? My pimp hand is strong.

It's already starting to look like this will get crushed between the better-promoted Thor and Captain America. It's too bad, because I still think this is potentially something. I love space opera, I love Martin Campbell. Don't have any particular affection for the character or Ryan Reynolds, but I don't have anything against them either. So far the big stumbling block is the chintzy look of everything.

It's possible Thor will stumble and this will be able to sneak in? Maybe? They'd have to market it REALLY well, though.

For years I remember thinking, Is Ryan Reynolds supposed to... happen? I suspect I will no longer ask that after this movie. Unless I'm being sarcastic.

The marketing machine hasn't really kicked up yet, but they're gonna need to sell people on the whole "fighter pilot becomes superhero" angle, and I don't think that's going to be a huge draw for a lot of people. But, again, we haven't seen a lot of the effects stuff.

I forsee Tron numbers.

Screw it, i'll be the guy to champion this film.

Really looking forward to it, liking what i have seen/heard so far and I think I want to see it more than Thor.

I really hope to be surprised by GL but all signs point to this being WB/DC's Ang Lee's HULK.

In other news, I finally watched WB's animated GL: FIRST FLIGHT. It wasn't bad.

So what? Ang Lee's HULK is a near masterpiece IMHO. I wish all comic book movies had as much ambition. It took Singer, Raimi and Nolan until their second movie to fully realize their artistic potential. Lee fucking NAILED it on the first go.

I suppose this has potential to repeat the IRON MAN success - second tier comic hero catapults into cultural awareness thanks to charismatic lead and great effects. But last trailer didn't exactly set the world on fire, and I frankly keep forgetting it's even coming out this year. Bad sign.

I do hope this surprises us all. I like Reynolds and Campbell's done some fantastic directing work. But I'll be fairly stunned if this is 1) actually good and 2) financially successful.

I think it's got a good shot at being a fun film, but financially it's got an uphill battle. But like you said, it fits the IRON MAN mould almost to a T, and look how that turned out. I dunno - predicting the outcome on this one with any kind of certainty seems like a mug's game.

Reynolds is anywhere close to RDJ charm. Peppers also helped a little.

I can understand the uphill battle with marketing.  For one thing, even if some of the movie after the first act is Earthbound, they went digital with the image of the Lantern.  And it looks like the scenes in space especially are incredibly more intensive in terms of special effects than Thor.  Despite this, I'm still holding out hope:  Blake Lively's awfulness notwithstanding, some of the pre-release buzz has hinted at a scope that will really surprise audiences, and Campbell is still in my good graces as a director.

I have a feeling that the second trailer, when it is released, will be our first "proper" look at the movie - visually, tonally, etc.

I am looking forward to...Green Lantern, but less than the...3 other superhero films this summer.  Thor, Captain America, and X-Men First Class are...Higher on my list of 2011 films to see.  I am expecting, GL to be in my top 10.

I admit the first preview left me cold, but I've been a GL fan for a while now (starting during the Kyle Rayner era and all the way up to the Geoff Johns era) and hope this pans out. There's a multitude of villains and storylines, especially recently, to pull from to create a strong series and story arc for Hal.

The first movie - Hector Hammond and introduces Sinestro.

The second movie- Sinestro goes evil and gets a yellow power ring; maybe even introduce the Manhunters, hinting at the Guardians' shady past

Third movie - Mogul destroys Coast City, leading to Hal's battle with the Guardians; perhaps he's redeemed by a Star Sapphired Carol Ferris or he becomes Parallax; Black Hand could exploit all the death in Coast City

Fourth Movie - all out Sinestro Corps War/Blackest Night

Wouldn't even take much planning, as Sinestro, Star Sapphire and Black Hand could hint at the greater emotional spectrum over several movies without it feeling shoe-horned in.

This is my point. Some folks will recognize the ambition of GL & appreciate the artistic vision of the film while others will be annoyed by certain basic misunderstandings of the character. I've given Lee's HULK a chance a few times over the years & I can't stand the laboured effort to bring the character emotional dimension. Alternately, I thought The Incredible Hulk was exactly what a Hulk movie should be: fun.

I think you're giving Martin Campbell a lot more credit than he deserves.

Please, don't let them do Blackest Night or the Rainbow Lantern Corps shit. That's one of the stupider ideas that's been injected into the DCU of late.

With Johns basically in charge of the creative direction for all of DC's properties in all forms of media (with the exception of the projects Nolan is shepherding), I can't see them NOT using Sinestro Corps or all the other lanterns.

I kind of like the idea of the multiple color Lanterns, but I haven't really been reading the comics lately to see what Johns is doing with it. It probably involves dismemberment, which is a pity, because the many colors thing would be a great sell for kids, one would think.

But I think that this movie might end up surprising some people. People are drawing Iron Man comparisons, but it seems that they're going way bigger and ay more intense than that. I'm looking forward to seeing how it pans out, hopefully for the good.

Johns walks a fine line with me. I love his plotting, he always brings an epic scope that is capable only in comics, and he's generally able to streamline continuity to a degree that makes it accessible and fun (not always true, see Legion of 3 Worlds). His need, however, to inject Silver Age sensibilities with Modern Age violence is sort of baffling and off-putting. With that said, I am a fan of his Green Lantern work, which has built strongly on the basic tenants of GL's origin and the Alan Moore stuff from the '80s.

I only cite Johns's stories as a wealth of material because they tend to feel self-contained (while building on one another) and cinematic. The movie already seems to be following Secret Origins closely, but that could be a coincidence of the source material.

Hey, the WonderCon 2011 footage is up.

Ryan Reynolds was terribly miscast & the bright green domino mask looks awful but, my god, did they knock everything else out of the park.

News buddy - taking your YT link out till the main page article is up.

Screen capping the damn thing now.

Blackest Night honestly made my head hurt.

Footage was great. I was worried after that first trailer....man did that suit look like shit. But it looks like they really improved the FX since then. This looks fantastic.

Can't wait for the midnight showing.

I'm someone who dares to mix up the Green Lantern and the Green Hornet.  That footage though... it looks like it could be a lot of fun.  Some really gonzo stuff compared to most superhero movies.  I hope Campbell can ground it emotionally so that I can care about all the craziness.

Man, that bright, near-neon green mask is really killin' this enterprise for me. It seems to completely negate any sense of gravitas from the character in costume.

That footage did way more for me than the trailer.

It's corny as shit but my geeky heart beat a little faster when he recited the oath.

More than that, after the insult that FOX's squandering of Galactus and Silver Surfer was, it's nice seeing a comic book movie given the appropriate scale.

I never knew of 'the oath' until I saw that Comic Con footage of Reynolds reciting it for that kid, and even I got goosebumps from it.  It's just so BIG and EARNEST.

So, apparently Ryan Reynolds has only two expressions; the cost of acting in front of nothing, a lack of range or proper direction, take your pick. Visually, yes, it looks better, but what I'm most concerned with is what happens when humans are speaking to one another. That initial trailer showed some of that, and it was frightening. Despite the fact that it looks like they're aiming for fun, relatively light and pulpy (a good thing), I'm still not quite won over. Also, yeah, it's an origin movie, get over it.

Looks cool. They should have ditched the mask, though. The costume actually looks really, really good without it.

TICKET FUCKING SOLD!!! That was GREAT!!! This is now my most anticipated movie of the summer with Harry Potter a close second followed by Thor, X-Men and Captain America. Transformers and Pirates will suck shit though.

Anyway, back to Green Lantern, my ONLY reservation at this point is Reynold's as he still comes off as a bit of a wisecracking douchebag. I think Chris Pine would have been ideal in the role IMHO.

Totally, it got me good. In fact that oath kinda exemplifies why I'm a DC kid more than Marvel. They just seem to have that little bit more iconic gravitas with their heroes, that touch of the epic.

That footage is nothing if not epic - love it.

I want a Doctor Who movie with that scale and scope. GL just looks so gloriously COSMIC.

OA...WOW!  While not a film I am anticipating as high as the likely...MARVELous Super Trio, of THOR, Captain America, and X-Men First Class, Green Lantern's...Might, should, Greenlight, the way to GL2!  I think RR was...Perfectly cast as Hal, since the filmmakers chose...not to have the more...Stoic, version from Jordan's origins!  Blake should also keep GL's Battery very...Lively in the non-action scenes as well!

Geek nitpick: the "collar" on Reynolds Green Lantern outfit was glaringly bad and fakey. Enough to start taking me out of the shot. Hope that's fixed by release.

I...Love, that...MASSIVE Ring Powered...Gatling Gun used by Hal, in the trailer to...Green Lantern!

I hope JELLYFISH GL has a couple of lines. And hopefully he'll take Hal to school during an intense training sequence. Then when Hal starts to get better, they'll bond.

I DEMAND THAT THIS SONG PLAY DURING THE END CREDITS!!!

OK what are these hints I keep seeing talked about? Carol Ferris will get to be Star Sapphire in this? If they put Blake Lively into a costume even a bit resembling the actual Star Sapphire one my libido will make me watch it like a billion times. I really can't afford such an expense. Please someone shoot his rumor down.

Edit: Whew! Crisis averted. I found an interview and she's not becoming Star Sapphire. At least not in this movie. I have some time to set some cash aside.

It looks like they're going for the hard sell.

Didn't realize Jango Fett was Abin Sur.

Watched the footage 1/2 a dozen times or so. The oath just gives me the chills EVERY TIME. Like biting into a York Peppermint Patty.

This is screening for critics, right?

It has been seen.

Starting a post-release thread if no one minds.
