Ponder life and death with Jeff Bridges and Peter Weir
post #2 of 9

Haven't seen this this since it first came out on video but I loved it when I saw it. The one scene that stuck out in my mind was when Bridges hcrashed the car and Rosie Perez tried to hold onto that toolbox like it was her son. Great movie.

Its an outstanding film and easily Bridges best performance (he was robbed that year for an oscar) it might just be my favorite Weir film as well and thats saying alot.

The ending always makes me emotional and few films do but the reality of that crash and then Bridges helping that kid and walking away from his friend as he starts touching all those people god thats heavy.

Highly recommended to those who haven't seen it.

A real brief breakdown as to why:

The flashback where the plane is starting to take it's nosedive, and the staff and passengers are at this point trying to brace for impact. Rather hurridly, the flight attendants are collecting all personal items that each passenger have on their body. The quick inventory is a lot of typical stuff like portable CD players, pens, notepads, etc.

But one item stuck out to me like a sore thumb: a pair of scissors. At first, I laughed out loud and asked "Why the hell would anyone bring scissors on a flight? Surely that would be taken by airport security, right?". Then it dawned on me:

This movie was made years before 9/11 happened.

Best use of U2 in a film. Ever.

Another thing: John De Lancie sure is a good luck charm when it comes to stories that involve plane crashes.

This film uses U2 better than RATTLE & HUM.

One of the most criminally neglected movies of the last 20 years, in my opinion.  Such a great film.

Also of note, the use of a Sega Genesis and  "Splatterhouse" in the scene were Bridges snaps at his kid/s over real life not having "extra lives".
