I recently read Pax Romana which I loved. It was right up my alley and the art was pretty cool. I moved on to Manhattan Projects by the same author, but I'm not really liking it very much.

I'm reading Hawaiian Dick now which I'd long put off. It's light, but a fun change of pace. I wanted to remind everyone that tomorrow Massive #4 hits the stands. I can't remember the last time I was this excited for a non LXG comic.

Great review of Massive here:  http://ifanboy.com/articles/advance-review-brian-woods-the-massive-1-spoiler-free/

That is awesome.  I defintely need to get this.  I've been out of it.  Or maybe I was never in.  I did recently read Whedon's run on X-men, and I must admit, I LOVED it.  I haven't read many contemporary x-men runs, but god damned if Whedon isn't an amazing comic book writer.  His run was funny, surprising, and thrilling, and it also looked incredible.  Oh, heaven.

Also finishing off, Warren Ellis' OCEAN, which is pretty kickass, and so far feels above stock Warren Ellis stuff.  Not, mind blowing or anything, it's only an 8 issue mini series, but I'm enjoying it quite a lot.  The banter seems to be just right, sometimes it can get too Waren Ellisy.

Oh and WHO IS JAKE ELLIS is a must read.  Awesome.  It's a kickass spy genre story, with amazing visuals.  Get it, if you haven't read it.  It's brilliant, imo.

I've been meaning to get to Pax, I like the dudes other stuff too, although some of it can be underwheliming.  But Transhuman is aces.  The best I've read from him.  Still gotta check out Pax, and Nightly News, which I've heard both kick ass.

I have heard Transhuman praised and it's definitely one I intend to get to. I was really impressed with Pax, and so while Manhattan Projects seemed fun and diverting, it just felt like a step down and so it didn't hit the spot when I came looking for a follow up to. pax. Nightly News sounds great though and so that's another I have to read.

I have only recently begun to dive into comics in a broad way. For a long time I'd stick only to authors I already knew and trusted, but now I find myself trying new books and seeking out new experiences. Massive is definitely my favorite thing going right now, and if you get into it yourself I'd love to hear what you think. Chud reviewed issue #1 with 5 tentacle monster things out of 5.

I recently read Ellis' Orbiter which I really dug, and so I will definitely give Ocean a shot! Who Is Jake Ellis will go on my list as well!

I just finished reading Hawaiian Dick: Byrd of Paradise. It was light reading, but I loved the atmosphere and settings. It's a hard boiled detective comic set in 1953 Hawaii, with super natural elements based on Polynesian mythology.  I'm now moving on to Hawaiian Dick: The Last Resort.

Can anyone explain to me why the trade paperback for Hawaiian Dick: Volume III : Screaming Black Thunder seems to have only a handful of copies for sale online, with prices ranging from $350-$1500? The first two trade paperbacks are under $10!

I'm going to read The Last American.

Transhuman is definitely a winner.  Its funny, bizarre and clever.

Ocean is cool, it has some awesome concepts, but now that I've finished it, its not a must read, I'd say.  I have ORBITER and I mean to read it sometime.

Jake Ellis is one of the best and coolest comics I've read in a while.  Everything about it is awesome!  You won't be disappointed.

Awesome, I need to read this too.  I have a lot of trades in my house, but I've gotten into reading comics through my 55 inch TV, which is connected to my MAC.  I use a wireless keyboard and trackpad to browse through comixology.  Reading this way has transformed my love of comics.  Its a new TV, and all the blacks are pitch black, and the colors super vibrant.  It looks astounding.  When I'm on the road for work, I'm in Madrid now, I obviously use something else, like my pad.  But, it can be hard for me to dive into a comic that isn't on Comixology.  I hope this one is on Comixology.

Glad to hear Transhuman is worth checking out!

I just finished Ocean. It did have some cool ideas, but somehow it didn't add up to the sum of it's parts in the end. It was a little too breezy and schlocky for my tastes. I'd have loved for the story to be meatier.

And Jake Ellis is on my list, so thanks.

That sounds like a great way to enjoy comics! If my TV were slightly larger (it's 26") that might be a good option for me. The Magic Trackpad and Apple Wireless Keyboard seem like they'd be perfect for browsing. I use my iPad for comics, which works great, but it's an iPad 2 so the resolution is such that at times tiny text isn't as clear as I'd like it to be. Oh well, I can always zoom in. Comixology is a good app. I use it for certain comic purchases, and then Comic Flow for comics I've downloaded from the web (I try only to download comics that are out of print or not available digitally).

The Last American was interesting. The basic idea is that nuclear war would suck for the country / the planet / humans, and in that sense it felt like I'd seen this material better handled elsewhere before, but the basic concept is strong, the art is at times pretty harrowing and something about the ending continues to stick with me. Don't rush to get it, but it wouldn't be a waste of time either. It's available on Comixology for $4.99 or so.

I'm stuck at work all day today so I think I'm either going to dive back into Conan which I've been off for a while now, or maybe try Mumbai Confidential or The Light, a horror miniseries I read about.

Yea, it actually is an amazing way to read comics.  I just lay on my sofa, sometimes with a doobie, lol, and read comics only moving a muscle or two.  Its heaven.  I don't have the apple magic trackpad or apple wireless keyboard, I have a logitec wireless keyboard and trackpad, which works fine on the MAC, although a little laggy compared to how it worked on my old PC laptop.  So I'm thinking of ordering the magic track pad and wireless keyboard, thanks for the idea.  Have you ever used em?  How are they?  Although, I should probably refrain, I keep burning a whole in my bank account.  When I get home on thursday, I'm going to bootcamp windows on my MAC, and see which OS is better for reading comics.

An Ipad 2 is actually an amazing device to read comics on, the thing is, I have an Ipad 1, and it's a bit heavy.  And Ipad 3 is the same weight as the 1, so I actually think the 2 is far better for reading comics, despite the higher resolution of the 3.  On the road I have my 1, and it does the job just fine.  I'm thinking of getting an Ipad 2, or the new Galaxy tab, I dunno if I should.  What I'd really like is an 11 or 12 inch one, that is super light, and has amazing resolution and contrast.  My Samsung Galaxy II, has an OLED screen, which IMO is the best panel one can lay their eyes upon.  It's only a matter of time before they start incorporating this into tablets and laptop screens, but it might be really expensive when it hits these devices.  New 55 OLED TVs are silly expensive, like 4 grand or something.  I went overboard this summer and pimped out my room into my own version of nerd heaven.  The only thing I'm not sure I did right was getting a MBP instead of a MBA, its less than a month old.  Oh well, I like it fine, but the MBA would've been a better comic reading device.  Its just that I picked one up in the states, since its far back over there than in Europe, and I'm back in London for god knows how long for work.  Well, now I'm London based.  So I'd have to mailt it to my parents to return it, which could end up in disaster.

I agree with you upon OCEAN.  I actually started it on my TV, and finished it on the road, because I'm in Madrid for work.  And there's no doubt the TV makes me like the series more.  But, you're right, it starts strong, and appears promising, but it just doesn't finish great.  It's exactly what you said, it just feels too breezy, especially the ending.

Ellis had done some cool short mini series, like Black Summer, No Hero, and Supergods.  But he's also done quite a few that just didn't gel into cohesive piece.  Mumbai Confidential or The Light?  Cool, never heard of either, but I shall research them, and order them.  I've returned to becoming a comics junkie, and I couldn't be more pleased.

The Last American sounds awesome, and I already bought it, I'll read it with the proper expectations.  What I'm super duper duper excited for the ending of THE BOYS.  I freaking love this series, I read the first 50 issues, and then stopped, because I generally like waiting till the end of a series to polish it off.  I'm a bit impatient when it comes to waiting for month to month, and there are soooooo many comics to read, that there are always full series to be read, while I wait for certain ones to finish.  But there are only two more issues to go, so I might start it soon.  I don't know what Comixology has on it, but when I was reading it, I just went to this awesome comic book store in London and bought every available BOYS issues, this was quite a while back, when there were only 50 or so issues out.  If you're not reading it, I'd recommend it man.

Btw, I have some issue with how Comixology formats comics on tablets, and how it does not allow you to fix your zoom on every page.  I like zooming until there are no borders on the side, and then scrolling down.  But when you go to the next page, the zoom is gone, and its back to a whole page being seen at once.  Its can be kinda annoying.

I'm jealous! Sounds like you have a great set up already, but if you ever have some money burning a hole in your pocket, the Magic Trackpad is a seriously cool device. I've not used one myself, but if you love gesture based controls, it looks to take the tablet experience to the desktop: http://www.apple.com/magictrackpad/

iPad 3 is about a tenth of a pound heavier than iPad 2, from what I understand. A small, but distinct difference, you're right. However, I'd say that the screen resolution issue when it comes to viewing an entire comic page at once (without having to zoom in on various panels) would give iPad 3 the edge. I am glad you're able to use the Original iPad for comics. It might be a bit heavy with a regressive form factor, but that doesn't mean that it's not good for comics, necessarily.

Your new TV sounds fantastic! I need a new TV but keep spending money on other stuff instead. Oh well, I figure if I wait long enough I'll be able to get something at a good price that would have knocked everyone's socks off a few years ago.

By the way, next generation iPads are rumored to be in line for the fabled IGZO display technology. Supposedly this allows for brighter, thinner and sharper screens.

The Light is pretty spooky! I'm on issue #2. It's about an event where all of a sudden anyone who looks at an electric light spontaneously combusts from the inside out. A man wearing welding goggles and his blindfolded daughter flee for safety. Mumbai Confidential I've not started yet but it's got good marks, as a sort of modern day Indian noir.

And those Ellis miniseries will go on my list!

Thanks for the suggestion on The Boys! It's great to learn about cool titles from knowledgeable people. I've got a lot I need to get through (the main comic app I use doesn't let me delete comics, so I really need to work through my back log and then delete the app and reinstall it in order to free up some space), but I'll absolutely look into it!

Re: Comixology: That's true. I don't mind that as much, but what irks me is that the "guided view" tech, while cool in theory, seems to cut off bits of the panels. It's not a perfect science. I really like the simple controls on Comic Flow's App. Double tap, pinch zooms, and then just taps and swipes to change pages.

And this is a short read I have coming up, as it's a rather slim one shot, but I ordered this online and it arrived this morning:

It's about the final battle of the Gallic Wars. Got high marks last year.

Quote:

THE LAST BATTLE, set in 52 BCE Gaul, begins as Caesar’s forces lay siege to the barbarian stronghold of Alesia in  a battle which would forever change history; while the rebel Cammius, who once fought for Rome, leads a second barbarian army to attack the combined Legions of Rome from behind. Caesar dispatches his favorite general, Caius Rodius, to track through the untamed countryside, and bring back the rebel’s head. Who better to hunt Cammius, than the man who taught him the very skills he now uses to defy Rome? Tasked by a power-hungry leader he no longer trusts, to murder the man he raised as a son, Rodius questions whether the Roman “road of stone and blood” is a path he still wants to follow.

THE LAST BATTLE, an 80-page full-color graphic novel of intense historic war fiction.

Just ordered this one from Amazon over my lunch break:

Quote:

Paris in the thirties. The Butcher of the Dances is on the prowl for young loose women. Blanche works as a maid along with the only family she knows, her sister, fun-loving Agatha. Suddenly, Blanche loses her to what she saw was murder but others only write off as suicide. She decides to take matters into her own hands. In her pursuit, she ends up hired into a luxury house of call-girls. She even becomes quite good at certain lascivious practices while still remaining a virgin! But she also doesn't lose sight of her goal: find the Butcher. A suspenseful spicy tale as only the French could so lightly get away with, yet deceptive in its depth and realism. By the artist of Dungeon Early Years.

Sounds fun!

Just wanted to say I really enjoyed Last Battle. It's a short little story, but it's very well told (with a surprising sense of scope) and the art is wonderful.

Just released today, I'm going to read it later tonight:

Been getting back into the 2000 AD stuff.  Pat Mills' Savage is top drawer stuff; going to work through some Judge Dredd next.

Don't know why I didn't think of these before, but John Byrne's loose trilogy of Star Trek miniseries is rock-solid stuff: Crew, Assignment: Earth, and (my favorite) Leonard McCoy, Frontier Doctor.

I did read it. It was an interesting little story. A tad dark in places, but the art is cartooned in an agreeably impressionistic style and easy on the eyes. A worthwhile book for 10$, though I'd caution that it's not for everyone given the subject matter.

I'm going to read Massive #6 when I get home and off work. The highlight of my month is here! biggrin.gif

Just read the Massive #7. The story is picking up steam and things are getting exciting!

Once I get off work tonight it's time for The Massive #8!

One thing about Massive that's been bugging me is I wish they'd kept the original art team in place. The new artist is great but those first three issues were really unique and beautiful with their meticulous technical detailing on the ship.

Finished up The Massive #10 the other night. Very solid. Also read Alan Moore's Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? which was excellent.

Next up is the Nemo: Heart of Ice LXG hardcover. I absolutely cannot wait.

Make sure you read Nemo more than once. It's a cracking yarn with a lot of momentum, so a lot of its subtleties get swept up in the midst of everything as you're being propelled to the end.  I say do it the first time at full speed and then a second time at a more savory pace.

Will do! I end up reading the League books very slowly most times, spending several minutes on each page. I will be sure to take as much enjoyment from this tale as I can, seeing as we can't know when Moore will get around to writing another.

Really disappointed with the binding on the hardcover edition of Nemo Heart of Ice....

It should be a turquoise or aquamarine faux leather with a silver embossed Nemo crest on the cover, that way it would look of a kind with my other LXG hardcovers which are styled to look like leather bound volumes. Why do a hardcover if you're going to give it a shitty cover and no dust jacket?

I just got the hardcover edition of Lost Girls too and that one is handsomely bound. What gives, Top Shelf Comics??

Hey guys I just read this:

So very good, loved the book as a little girl and the artwork is superb love how little the wicked witch figures into the story in the original story I forgot about that and she look way creepier. Very good a fun little read, super recommended!

Yeah, good job by Skottie Young on that one.

Never really read much DC stuff, but got out 3 volumes of Justice from the library, mainly (actually, almost solely) because it's Alex Ross.

Got the first 5 GN's of Locke & Key... Surprised I haven't heard very much about the series because it's a fucking tour de force.
