CHUD VIDEO: Friday Wrap-Up Discussion Thread

by Renn Brown: link

The debut of our new test-video, which prepares you for your weekend in true sewer style!

Assuming you guys pin it down and it comes out regular from now on:

The Friday Fuck-Right-Off.

The Digital Drainpipe, or The Weekend Retrospect.

Those are my best.

If you really wanna go back to the sewer theme, The Friday Night Flush is kinda catchy.

I like it a lot. I like the mix of solo and twosome, I like the way you have the backgrounds behind the two of you different colours by setting up in front of that corner and I like hearing you big up Source Code all over the place and I like that you made me spit noodles all over my keyboard three times. I think you just might need to look into the camera more when you're in dynamic duo mode. Even if you're not the one who's talking either look into the cam or look at your wingman a good amount of the time. That doesn't mean never look down, it just means don't look down too much. Just use a short look down for a brain reset once in a while.

It might feel unnatural at first but once you play with it a little it can lead to easy comedic moments simply by exaggerating the idea or pulling very subtle faces and even on a casual production it's worth doing because it's more engaging for new people who don't already know and adore you. Actually, it's more engaging for everyone.

But that aside I'm already looking forward to the next one. I literally can't get enough. Literally.

As for the name, I like Pop Zeus's quite a bit.

Well, I think you scored gold for a title with 'Kill Brown People'. Direct, to the point and guaranteed to generate hits!

As for the podcast, Renn, you do a lot with what you're given technically but with the length of the thing: more cuts. I'd even say if you guys have a second camera to pull isolated shots on someone, or to cut away from the long bouts of talking, that would help quicken the pace and break up a monologue, and it looks better than the 'two shot to two shot' jump cut you have right now. Excellent framing on Nick in his office. Lights? As stated above, more funny faces or interaction; more dialogue between you and Nick because I want to hear you both talk. Love Nick's one liners that so excellently sum up something.

Scripted? Outlined?

The content's there, I think the delivery method could use a little work. But you keep making em, I'll keep watching em!

Dying to know which three spit noodle moments.

Oh, and the show is 100% ad-libbed, which I think is vital.

Well done, guys. Look forward to seeing how it's going to evolve. Love that it's ad-libbed.

Have you ever considered chopping up the other videocast so that it spans a full week and is easier to consume than an hour.  Similar to this (like 10 minutes a day or whatever).  This was fun and Renn made a joke.  Good stuff in there.

Point being : More frequently casts of any sort.  Less time.

Every movie you discuss should be compared to Orphan from now on.

MORE.

What of us that only have Battle LA coming out this weekend and no loved ones eligible for mutual masturbation, Renn? What are we supposed to do this weekend?

I love it. I look forward to more.

Right away, "... my name's Nick Nunziata and I'm having the quietest orgasm of my life". I know what I'm getting when I load these up to watch and yet somehow it still takes me by surpirse.

"... to prep you for your own inevitable death ..."

"... share this with your friends in the same way that you shared AIDS."

It's the way they're all delivered as if they're dead earnest, not delivered in a hammy, winking joke voice, and they're set up by the proper intro info non-jokes in between which sort of keep resetting the tone. So even though I know it's The Nunz and I expect there to be jokes the punchlines still punch me in and about the ribs. And the way there's that slight overemphasis on "AIDS", that one was worst of all. I just stopped eating after that.

Delight.

I see where you're coming from, but I really hope that never happens. I pull an Oliver in the Podcast thread on an almost monthly basis. However, part of what makes the regular show, video or otherwise, so great is the longer wait. There's more there to savour when one lands that way and it creates a much better sense of event (at least, to me.) So no offense Tomas, but I'd really hate it if they started getting released in bite-size chunks.

Nick, your fisting motion when discussing the Justice League/DC clusterbomb made me laugh. As did the aforementioned orgasm line. And your completely non-plussed "endorsement" of The Expendables 2. That whole body shrug was as perfect as the pretend-awe face you made when clutching the tennis ball and staring at your hand near the start.

New one coming soon. Pretty much same format/execution, and we're still accepting naming suggestions.

The upload is slower than Fanny Brice.

Chud: Cumming Soon.

It's good. Nice pacing to the discussions and the editing, a few jokes and some quick reviews. The new Renn sections, with his flamingo, are well done too, and add another good bit of variety to the proceedings. Keep em comin' and comin'.

Was that a cancor I kept hearing in the background?

Also this video contains the best Windows 95 screensaver joke I've ever seen.

Edit: I'm not going to correct the typo. Cancor sounds funny.

Nick's very serious "good afternoon" around 02:36 is superb. I liked how you made a joke out of the shot composition, Renn, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't notice your forehead being cut off at the start.

Nicely done chaps. The shot that weirded me out wasn't Renn being semi-decapitated, it was the Myspace angle of him crouching. But I can stand to be weirded out once in a while and I love that you dudes are keeping it fresh with locational freshness.

My original set-up was an opposite, low-angle shot that backdropped me with pipes. But then the screensaver joke happened and it was better.

The screensaver joke is top notch. It wasn't really the high angle shot that was uncomfortable, it was the crouching. I was feeling your knees aching just watching it, but that's probably because I'm an old bastard with fucked knees who's prone to projection. I'm sure you were comfy as a dream.

500+ views before the weekend gave out, and it should be the most viewed so far in less than week of being online. Definitely growing. Thanks for your support guys, keep it up!

I'm not some sort of baseball expert but that looked like a good hit.

Folks, it awaits!

You should have the frame in your "rant" solely focused on your crotch, Renn. The close up at the end ruined it.

Hmmm. "Crotch Rants"

Sounds like a good idea for a recurring segment.

That will be 500$. Cash please.

Put it in.

Finally watched last week's.

"... let's go fuck in this hotel."

I really like how you guys keep varying the settings for these things. Even when you're so far off that facial expressions are lost there's a visual element worth watching, what with disappearing cars and such. I always enjoy seeing which shots you've set up - what you've decided to have in the frame. The playfulness of some shots, the tastefulness of other shots ... it's all a lot of fun to gaze at.

Oh Tem Morrison. Even when the discussion is all about Green Lantern Martin Henderson gets more attention.

What a poor maori boy gotta do to get some love up in here?!?

Temuera Morrison was never in anything as exquisite as Torque. And that includes Once Were Warriors. Just be glad your humble island was involved in this.

A new one is exporting currently. Filled with fun artifacts from Nick and I's trip out west. One of us meets our demise at the end, once again.

I would kill to be able to visit the place where Vera Farmiga's bush lives.

Superb!

Spread it far and wide folks, if you care to be awesome. Weird weird weird.

Oh, and with this 14th video we should be crossing our 10,000th WrapUp view. By ep20 I hope we can double that, but only with super cool chewers helping push us there. Don't just like it... share it on your feed, tweet it, break into people's homes and spraypaint the URL on their walls. That kind of thing. We love you all.

My main complaint: the running time. We need more discussion, more irreverence. Just more.

I also think you were being entirely too kind to Bay, Renn. Maybe some of that spirit came into his thinking during the action scenes (maybe) but it doesn't account for all the other junk he inflicted on audiences. I think Nick had it right using the toilet to sum up his views on the "film."

We were given some advice from someone "in the biz" who's a big fan of these and he felt the one thing keeping us from being bigger is the length. I personally care much less about the movie discussion than the explosions and transformations and we really can't justify the full day's work they are already. All I can ask is to keep watching, keep sharing, and help us build an audience.

Yeah, your biz guy is right. Us fools who already love you can't get enough of this stuff but if you burn with the desire to grow your audience for internet video the fact remains that if you want more people to watch you need to stick to a running time which doesn't feel like a commitment. Even for a fan like me if it's something longer than 7 or 8 I find I put it off until I have a chunk of free time to sit and watch and do nothing else. But if I stumble across a 1-4 minute video I'm far more likely to give it a shot right there and then. Most of the internet is dumb like me and it would make it much easier for us to get the unknowing to give it a crack if the videos were in smaller chunks. Chunks big enough to cause damage, but short enough for one man to lift above his head and throw.

If you guys do have the time to produce 13-18 minutes of video content per week you'd most likely be better served breaking it into 2 or 3 separate episodes and spreading it across the week like Gojira spreads carnage across Japanese cities. It doesn't have to mean extra shooting, the show is naturally segmented and episodic already, so it would just mean a small amount of extra time tacking intros and outros on.

But enough of my uneducated babble, the real thing to concentrate on is that this latest one is still a sturdy whack of the usual splendidness. Nick's box-head review of Horrible Bosses is AV gold. Especially the bit where he goes over the cast and what they're recognised for. GOLD! Loved Renn's greenscreen Transformers trick too. Meatnick disturbed my spirits and the spirits of my ancestors. Renn's pause as he looks down and then says, "I don't wanna picture that," speaks for nations. You guys are the sunshines. The beautiful, black-hearted sunshines.

I get where Bobby's at but I think this shorter version works a treat. If you have the chance to make more video content maybe whip it out on a Mon or Tues as well as a Fri release.

Love. Keep these coming, they're really good. Love the varying locations and the off moments. Bummer that you didn't report from the Universal Studio Park as teased in the opening bit of the LA segment, but at least you visited the place where Taye Diggs once walked. Classic location.

I know it can be a pain to put a lot of time into something only for it to pass without much in the way of comments, tweets, "likes", and so on, but I hope the steady praise for these gives you two even half the joy the videos give me. I actually look forward to them ahead of time now, not just click on them if I happen to see one posted; it honestly doesn't really feel like the weekend's here if I haven't watched the latest installment.

As for the business side of things, I appreciate what you're saying. Even though the logic behind it makes perfect sense to me, I suppose it's just annoying that something I feel is aimed squarely at me has to be adapted for people who think lowest common denominator 30 second YouTube videos are the funniest thing ever (outside The Zookeeper et al.) It's a silly "why should people who don't even know who Robert Z'Dar is get everything!" kind of non-complaint, but I just couldn't resist letting you guys know that, if you decide to make these longer and talkier instead of shorter and flashier, I'll be equally game.

That said, I plan to keep watching 'em as long as you keep making 'em.

Nice to see Zookeeper not beat Horrible Bosses hope that matters in the long run.

More fun.

I dug this, despite never watching Breaking Bad and having zero interest in Potter. Nice running time and suitably quirky touches such as the backwards shooting of your review, Renn. No Clovie, though. I'm not saying he needs to become the mascot for these, but... actually, that might be something worth looking into.
