It's hard to figure out how he thought this would be good for business....

A furor has erupted over GoDaddy CEO Bob Parson’s video blog in which he shoots an elephant in Zimbabwe. And rightly so. Parson’s video cites crop destruction as a reason to kill elephants and so save Zimbabwean farmers from starvation. But it is wrong in so many ways.

It’s easy to write off objectors to the killing as “bleeding hearts” and “treehuggers,” but there’s much more to this than meets the eye. Three key points emerge.

First, the elephant is already threatened from poaching for ivory. Populations have plummeted in the last few decades. Conservationists and land managers are striving to save the species from extinction. There is no good reason to “cull” the species. The loss of even one individual simply hastens the demise of these creatures – Earth’s biggest land animal. By making it “okay” to kill an elephant Parsons is undermining the hard work of thousands of scientists, conservationists and policy-makers who are trying to save the species from extinction.

Second, various methods exist to protect farmers and their crops from the depredations of elephants that do not involve killing them. Relocation and fencing are among the alternatives. Compensating villagers for lost crops from ecotourism revenues is another possibility. Mr. Parsons could well have applied his funds to promote these possibilities rather than killing elephants. The video betrays a complete lack of understanding of elephant behavior and ecology. The narrative claims that elephants will not return to areas in which bulls have been killed. But what time frame does this encompass. How long does this supposed deterrent last?

Third, the depiction in the video of villagers hacking at the dead elephant is a demeaning narrative of their plight. The presence of hunger in Zimbabwe can be attributed much more to corruption and greed of in-country oligarchs rather than to marauding elephants. Mr. Parsons could have used his considerable influence to call for social justice for Zimbabwe’s poor.

The bottom line is that Bob Parsons as CEO has betrayed an astonishing lack of sensitivity and poor judgment. That said, given GoDaddy’s record (e.g., its notorious Super Bowl ads) I am cynical enough to believe that Parsons planned this from the beginning, knowing the anger (and media coverage) he would invoke. If that’s the case, such actions are even more reprehensible, illustrating the depths to which someone will descend to get publicity. Nothing less than Parson’s resignation or firing will satisfy those who are rightly outraged at such a despicable act.

Nonsense. Elephants are the deer of Africa. Roaming around the savanna in the thousands, busting up people's crops and their SUVs. These farmers are thanking their lucky stars that GoDaddy's CEO is on the case, culling the vermin.

It's true though, there's an excuse for everything.

If you enjoy killing animals, whether it's culling a herd or otherwise, I think you're kind of sick.

I don't even know what GoDaddy is, but I can honestly say I hate everything about it.

I honestly don't have a huge issue with this. I mean, it's dickish that he videotaped and put it online, but the act itself is fine in my book.

He wasn't running around Africa just shooting the largest thing he saw, it was a trouble elephant with a history of destroying crops and hurting people. On that note, he killed it pretty humanely, he took it down in two shots, a pretty remarkable feat.

I can understand people who have issues with it, but I don't have a problem with it.

But hey, I'm odd.

If you want to hunt something that's really creating problems for everyday people, hunt CEOs for sport.

Fences are a hell of an invention. I'm sure Mr. Parsons could have afforded one and some other nice deterrents.

Seriously, did this cunt watch White Hunter, Black Heart and fall asleep before the end?

Clint needs to make a sequel. Some people have missed or forgotten the point and need reminding.

That's really what it comes down to. This guy is rich as hell, he could easily have afforded to help this village in so many ways. He could have bought them electric fences and better farming equipment and food and left them a lot better off than they were before, and he still would have been fabulously wealthy.

Instead he killed an elephant and claimed it was an act of charity, but only because killing it was what he wanted to do in the first place. If it were actually for the sake of the villagers he could have chosen to help them in so many ways that would have more long term benefits for them and wouldn't have involved killing an animal already so threatened by poachers.

Love it!

Well, elephants can be a lot like people.  Some of them act badly because they've had a hard life, or have been mistreated... but, like people, some of them are just jerks.

Stop that, Mr. Simpson...

From what I've read, there are plenty of options to discourage rogue elephants. Gunning them down is supposed to be a desperate last resort, not something you put a grinning, boasting YouTube video about.

GoDaddy is based in Scottsdale, Arizona.  As far as I'm concerned, this is just another reason to hate Arizona -- the Mississippi of the 21st century.

And if you read a bit on the reasons "rogue" elephants behave the way they do, killing them and bragging about it gets a whole extra layer of douchiness added to it. But hey, empathy for other humans is rare already, empathy for something as lowly as an animal is downright miraculous.

I use GoDaddy to register my domain names. They also do webhosting and other website related stuff.

I guess I have to look for an alternate way to register my domains ...

I was just gonna say...

Now that I've finally transferred all my domains over to them, what would be a good (cheap) alternative registrar to consider.

Tony Jaa would like to have a word with you, Mr. Parsons.

Namecheap.com has jumped on the opportunity to get your business: http://community.namecheap.com/blog/2011/03/30/elephants/

I haven't used them myself but they look pretty good, plus the warm fuzzy feeling you get from not supporting an arrogant douche.

After the video was released, NameCheap offered to transfer accounts for $4.99 and donate $1 for each new customer to the nonprofit. As of April 5, NameCheap says it has raised $20,433 to help African elephants.

Karma's a bitch.

Bwahahaha!

Not that any of this will or should make a big dent in GoDaddy's business but I love it when companies pull this type of stunt.
