So Record Store Day is coming up on the 16th. The full list of special releases for that day is out, and there are some AWESOME records I'm going to be picking up. Here's the list for those that are interested:

I'll be picking up:

Daft Punk - Tron Legacy Soundtrack (Vinyl)

Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues/Grown Ocean (45rpm Vinyl)

The Grateful Dead - Grateful Dead (LP Vinyl)....first time on vinyl in more than 40 years, cut from the original mono tapes.

Phish - Two Soundchecks (45rpm 7in vinyl)

Flaming Lips - Heady Nuggs: The First 5 Warner Bros Records 1992-2002 (Hit To Death In The Future Head, Transmissions From The Satellite Heart, Clouds Taste Metallic, The Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots) (vinyl)

Various Artists - Rhymesayers Vinyl Picture Disk (vinyl)

Nickel Creek - Nickel Creek (vinyl)

This is the first I've heard of this. Pretty cool.

But I don't understand, why is the vast majority of special releases on vinyl? If they want to celebrate independent record stores, and presumably drum up sales, why appeal to the niche group of people that listen to actual records?

I think part of the point is to show that that niche group of vinyl lovers is still out there, and that artists should still provide their albums on vinyl, and that stores should still sell real records. There are usually more CD special releases than there are this year though. I guess they assume that you can go to any big box store to buy CDs, but vinyl is more of an "indie" thing.

Ok, then that totally makes sense.

I'd probably be a lot more excited if I had a decent record player. I have a ton of records, but only a little turntable that came from an elementary school. It's like 20 years old but gets the job done.

You can pick up a nice little Audio Technica turntable for like 120 bucks. Mine works great.

That Flaming Lips boxset...I want it SO BAD.

Also, Fucked Up is releasing a companion album to their new punk opera (David Comes to Life, released in June) that looks like a compilation from the main characters home town.  It's the bands tribute of punk and how it's evolved.  When a rock opera has a companion album full of songs the characters would listen to...I don't know what to think.  But I'm intrigued.

The Flaming Lips boxset is not an exclusive for record store day. Its just being released then. It does look awesome for sure.

WHAT?  Why was I not informed of this earlier?  Sounds amazing.

I picked up the Springsteen "Wrecking Ball" single during last year's Record Store Day, which was entirely silly on my part since I do not have a record player.  Should probably rectify that situation one of these days.

Picking up The Decemberists and The Joy Formidable for sure, need to do a bit more research on what's gonna be there and decide what else (Ryan Adams, Fleet Foxes) catches my eyem,

I'll probably go for the Tron Legacy soundtrack by Daft Punk and Rome by Danger Mouse.

Got that Fucked Up comp, the Big Star Third Master Tapes LP (which sounds amazing) and The Menzingers Chamberlain Waits blue vinyl (only 300 copies made).  Good record store day!

Got everything I went in for!

The Grateful Dead LP (reissue from original mono tapes...first time in 45 years).

Tron: Legacy 10" picture disc

Phish: Two Soundchecks 7"

Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues/ Grown Ocean

Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan In Concert: Brandeis University 1963 (for my dad's birthday)

Also picked up Sufjan Stevens "Seven Swans w/ special 7" of two unreleased songs). This wasnt a Record Store Day thing though.

I got really lucky with the Grateful Dead, Tron, and Phish records. They had 5 of the Dead, 4 of the Tron: Legacy, and 6 of the Phish. We got there at 9:20 this morning to get in line, the store opened at 11. When we got there, there were around 30 people already in line. There were atleast 6 people in line ahead of me that were saying they wanted the Phish one, so I figured I wouldnt be able to get it. Well, the doors opened and I went right to where the 7" and 10" records were...and it was sitting there for me to take! The Tron one was gone by the time I got to where it was supposed to be, but while standing in line to check out i saw one sitting propped up by the register that someone had changed their mind on. Lucky me!
